4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The CM83E requires 3x 1.5V AAA batteries (not included). To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the meter is powered off and all test leads are disconnected.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
- Insert the batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
- Close the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2. Connecting Test Leads
For most measurements (voltage, resistance, capacitance, diode, continuity, temperature), connect the test leads:
- Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (Common) jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the "INPUT" jack.
For temperature measurement, connect the temperature probe to the "COM" and "INPUT" jacks, observing polarity if applicable.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Power On/Off and Function Selection
Rotate the central function selection dial to the desired measurement mode to power on the meter. To power off, rotate the dial to the "OFF" position.
5.2. AC/DC Current Measurement
The CM83E can measure both AC and DC current up to 600A. For the CM86B model, it can measure up to 1000A.
- Rotate the function dial to the "A~" (AC Current) or "A=" (DC Current) position.
- Press the clamp head trigger to open the jaws.
- Clamp the jaws around a single live wire of the circuit to be measured. Ensure the wire is centered within the jaws.
- Read the current value on the display.
Reminder: When measuring current with the clamp, you can only measure a single live wire. Measuring multiple wires or a cable containing both live and neutral wires will result in an inaccurate or zero reading.

5.3. Voltage Measurement (AC/DC)
- Rotate the function dial to the "V~" (AC Voltage) or "V=" (DC Voltage) position.
- Connect the red test lead to the positive point and the black test lead to the negative point (or neutral/ground for AC).
- Read the voltage value on the display.

5.4. Resistance Measurement
- Rotate the function dial to the "Ω" (Resistance) position.
- Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the display.

Figure 7: Example of Resistance Measurement
5.5. Capacitance Measurement
- Rotate the function dial to the "F" (Capacitance) position.
- Connect the test leads across the capacitor.
- Read the capacitance value on the display.

Figure 8: Example of Capacitance Measurement
5.6. Diode Test
- Rotate the function dial to the "Diode" symbol position.
- Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; the display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.
Refer to the product video for a demonstration of diode testing.
5.7. Continuity Test (On-off Buzzer)
- Rotate the function dial to the "Continuity" symbol position.
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
- If the resistance is below a certain threshold (typically <50Ω), the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.
Refer to the product video for a demonstration of continuity testing.
5.8. NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Measurement
This feature allows for safe detection of AC voltage without direct contact.
- Rotate the function dial to any position, then press the "NCV" button to enter NCV mode.
- Bring the top of the clamp meter close to the wire or electrical outlet.
- If AC voltage is detected, the red LED will flash, and a buzzer will sound, with the intensity of the alarm indicating the voltage strength.

5.9. Temperature Measurement
The CM83E supports temperature measurement using the included temperature probe.
- Rotate the function dial to the "TEMP" position.
- Connect the K-type thermocouple (temperature probe) to the "COM" and "INPUT" jacks.
- Place the probe tip on or in the object whose temperature you wish to measure.

5.10. Data Hold
Press the "HOLD" button (often combined with the flashlight button) to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release.
5.11. Zeroing DC Current
When measuring DC current, residual magnetism or external magnetic fields can cause a non-zero reading even when no current is flowing. Use the ZERO function to compensate.
- Ensure no current is flowing through the clamp jaws.
- Rotate the function dial to the DC Current ("A=") position.
- Press the "ZERO" button. The display should show "0.000".
- Proceed with your DC current measurement.

5.12. Flashlight and Backlight
The meter includes a flashlight for illuminating dark work areas and a backlight for the display.
- Flashlight: Press the flashlight button (often combined with Data Hold) to turn it on/off.
- Backlight: Press the "SEL" button briefly to toggle the display backlight.

5.13. True RMS Measurement
The CM83E supports True RMS measurement, which provides accurate readings for non-sinusoidal waveforms, common in modern electrical systems with electronic loads.

Figure 14: True RMS Measurement for Accuracy
It is necessary to measure non-sinusoidal power accurately. The current waveforms of some electrical appliances are not sinusoidal, and the commercial power is distorted in different situations. True RMS ensures your measurement accuracy in these conditions.
5.14. Inrush Current Measurement (CM86B Only)
The Inrush Current function is available only on the CM86B model. It measures the initial surge of current when a device is first powered on.
5.15. Live Wire Check
The CM83E supports LIVE wire checking. This function helps identify live wires in an electrical circuit.

7. Maintenance
7.1. Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the clamp jaws clean and free of debris.
7.2. Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in Section 4.1. Remove batteries if the meter is not used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
7.3. Calibration
The meter is factory calibrated. For professional calibration, contact a qualified service center.
8. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Mestek Digital Clamp Meter.
- Q: What is the difference between manual range/auto range smart measurement?
- A: Automatic range refers to the measurement range without manual adjustment, and intelligent range refers to the automatic conversion of measurement function and range without manual adjustment.
- Q: What does the over range display mean?
- A: Over-range means the value shown exceeds the currently set range, and the clamp meter will display "OL" to indicate over-range.
- Q: Why does the number jump when the DC voltage/current is not tested?
- A: The digital jump of the DC voltage gear is because the input impedance of the clamp meter is very sensitive, so the mV level jump is normal. The digital jump of the DC current gear is because of the influence of the external magnetic field; it needs to be combined with the zero function.
- Q: How to measure the leakage current?
- A: Pass the zero live wire through the clamp meter. If the clamp meter detects a current, it means that there is a leakage current. Note that the leakage current is generally very small, and the clamp meter may not be able to detect it.
- Issue: Buzzer not sounding during continuity test.
- Possible Cause: Low battery. The buzzer function may be affected by low battery power.
Solution: Replace the batteries with fresh ones. (Based on a review comment)
9. User Tips
- For DC Current Accuracy: Always use the "ZERO" function before taking DC current measurements to ensure accuracy, especially if you notice a non-zero reading when no current is present.
- Live Wire Measurement: Remember that clamp meters measure current by induction, so always clamp around a single live wire, not an entire cable, for accurate readings.
- Battery Life: If the buzzer or backlight seems weak, check and replace the batteries promptly.
- Versatile Tool: This meter is highly versatile for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts due to its wide range of functions and compact design.
