1. Introduction
The TIANXUN MD-6450 Metal Detector is an advanced device designed for detecting various types of metals, including gold nuggets, jewelry, relics, and coins. It features exclusive Target ID technology and patented discrimination capabilities, making it suitable for both experienced users and beginners across a wide range of detecting environments. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your MD-6450 metal detector.

2. Setup
2.1. Battery Installation
The MD-6450 requires four (4) AA batteries (not included). To install the batteries:
- Locate the battery compartment on the control housing.
- Slide the cover off the battery compartment.
- Insert four AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and - terminals match the indicators).
- Replace the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: Remove batteries if the MD-6450 will be stored for longer than 30 days to prevent potential leakage and damage.

2.2. Assembly
Assemble the metal detector by connecting the search coil to the lower stem, then attaching the lower stem to the middle stem, and finally connecting the control unit to the upper stem. Secure all connections firmly. Adjust the stem length to a comfortable position that allows you to sweep the search coil parallel to the ground without excessive bending.
2.3. Headphone Connection
Connect the included headphones to the designated audio jack on the control unit. Using headphones helps to hear subtle target signals and conserves battery life.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1. Power On/Off
To power on the MD-6450, press the 'Power' button (usually marked with a power symbol). The device will power on with a single touch and perform an initial self-check. To power off, press and hold the 'Power' button.
3.2. Ground Balance
Before beginning your search, perform a ground balance. Hold the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. This calibrates the detector to the local soil conditions, reducing false signals from ground mineralization.
3.3. Operating Modes
The MD-6450 offers five distinct detection modes, indicated on the LCD screen. Use the 'MODE' button to cycle through these options:
- ZERO-DISC (All Metal): Detects all types of metals.
- JEWELRY: Optimized for finding jewelry, typically ignoring small iron trash.
- CUSTOM: Allows you to set your own discrimination pattern to accept or reject specific target IDs.
- RELICS: Designed to find historical artifacts, often ignoring modern trash.
- COINS: Specifically tuned for detecting coins, often filtering out pull-tabs and bottle caps.
3.4. Sensitivity Adjustment
The detector has eight (8) sensitivity settings. Use the '+' and '-' buttons (often labeled 'SENSITIVITY') to adjust. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but can lead to more false signals in highly mineralized ground or areas with much trash. Start with a moderate setting and increase as conditions allow.
3.5. Discrimination (DISCRIM)
The discrimination feature allows you to ignore unwanted metals. The LCD features two indicator scales:
- Lower Scale (Notch Discrimination Scale): Indicates the current discrimination pattern. Pixels switched on will produce an audible response; those switched off will not.
- Upper Scale (Target ID Legend): Works with the Target ID Cursor to show the probable identity of a detected target. It consists of twelve graphic segments.
Use the 'DISCRIM' button and the Accept/Reject (√/×) pushbuttons to modify the discrimination pattern in Custom mode. This allows you to block or retain specific metal types based on their numerical ID.
3.6. Pinpointing (PP)
Once a target is detected, press the 'PP' button to activate the pinpointing mode. This helps to precisely locate the target before digging, minimizing the size of the excavation. In pinpoint mode, the detector will emit a continuous tone that increases in pitch and volume as you move the search coil directly over the target's center.
3.7. Sweep Technique
For effective detection, keep the search coil parallel to the ground and sweep it slowly from side to side in overlapping passes. Maintain a consistent height (1-2 inches) above the ground. Avoid lifting the coil at the end of each sweep, as this can reduce detection depth.
4. Maintenance
4.1. Cleaning
- After each use, wipe down the search coil and control unit with a damp cloth.
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the device.
- The search coil is waterproof and can be rinsed with fresh water, but the control unit is NOT waterproof and should not be submerged.
4.2. Storage
- Store the metal detector in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- If storing for extended periods (over 30 days), remove the batteries to prevent leakage and corrosion.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on the detector to prevent damage.
4.3. Search Coil Care
While the search coil is waterproof, avoid dragging it directly on rough or abrasive surfaces to prevent wear and tear on the coil and its cable.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1. No Power
- Check if the batteries are correctly installed with proper polarity.
- Ensure the batteries are fresh and fully charged. Replace all four AA batteries if needed.
5.2. Erratic Signals / False Signals
- Reduce the sensitivity setting.
- Perform ground balancing again to calibrate to current soil conditions.
- Move away from sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., power lines, other electronic devices, cell phones).
- Ensure the search coil cable is tightly wound around the stem and not loose.
5.3. No Detection
- Verify the device is powered on and in an appropriate detection mode (e.g., 'All Metal' or 'Zero-Disc').
- Check the sensitivity settings; ensure it's not set too low.
- Ensure the search coil is sweeping correctly over the target area, maintaining consistent height and overlap.
5.4. Display Issues
- If the LCD display is not functioning correctly or is dim, ensure the batteries are fully charged.
- If issues persist, contact customer support for further assistance.

7. User Tips
- Target ID Interpretation: The digital display shows Target ID values from 0 to 99. Generally, values from 0-40 indicate ferrous metals (like iron), while values from 40-99 indicate non-ferrous metals (such as silver, gold, or bronze). Refer to the full manual for a more detailed breakdown of specific value ranges for different metal types.
- Optimal Sweeping: Always keep the search coil parallel to the ground and sweep it slowly in overlapping motions for the best detection results.
- Certification: The MD-6450 is CE certified, meaning it complies with European safety, health, and environmental protection standards.
- Depth Variation: The actual detection depth can vary significantly depending on factors such as soil mineralization, target size, target material, and environmental conditions. Experiment with different modes and sensitivity settings to understand the detector's capabilities in your specific search area.
