4. Setup Guide

4.1 Installing the Battery

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the HR1 sensor module.
  2. Gently twist the battery cover counter-clockwise to open it.
  3. Insert a new CR2032 coin cell battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  4. Replace the battery cover and twist clockwise to secure it.

Important: Ensure the battery is inserted correctly to avoid damage to the device.

4.2 Attaching the Sensor to the Chest Strap

  1. Moisten the two electrode areas on the back of the chest strap with water or electrode gel.
  2. Snap the HR1 sensor module onto the two connectors on the chest strap. Ensure it is securely fastened.

4.3 Wearing the Chest Strap

  1. Adjust the chest strap to fit snugly around your chest, just below your pectoral muscles.
  2. The sensor module should be centered on your chest.
  3. The strap is made of knitted fabric and is super stretch, suitable for various body types.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On/Off

The BlackBird HR1 sensor does not have a power button. It automatically wakes up when it detects a heart rate signal and is connected to a device. A green indicator light will flash when it is active.

5.2 Connecting to Devices and Apps

The HR1 supports both BLE 5.0 (Bluetooth Low Energy) and ANT+ protocols, allowing it to connect to a wide range of smart devices and fitness applications.

To connect:

  1. Ensure the HR1 sensor is worn correctly and active (green light flashing).
  2. On your compatible device (e.g., bike computer, smartphone, smartwatch) or fitness app:
    • Go to the sensor pairing or device connection settings.
    • Select "Heart Rate Sensor" or "HRM" from the available device types.
    • Search for new devices. The HR1 should appear in the list.
    • Select the BlackBird HR1 to pair.
  3. Once connected, your device or app will display your real-time heart rate data.

5.3 Real-time Heart Rate Tracking

The HR1 utilizes advanced heart rate processing circuits and algorithms to filter noise and interference, ensuring stable and accurate heart rate data. This allows for high-performance real-time tracking during your activities.

6. Maintenance and Care

6.1 Cleaning the Sensor Module

  • Wipe the sensor module with a soft, damp cloth after each use.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the device.
  • Ensure the module is completely dry before storing.

6.2 Cleaning the Chest Strap

  • Rinse the chest strap under running water after each use.
  • Hand wash the strap with mild soap and water if necessary.
  • Do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, or bleach the strap.
  • Hang the strap to air dry.

6.3 Battery Replacement

When the battery is low, the sensor's performance may degrade, or it may stop transmitting data. Replace the CR2032 battery as described in Section 4.1.

6.4 Storage

  • Store the HR1 sensor and chest strap in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

No heart rate reading:
  • Ensure the chest strap electrodes are moistened and the sensor is properly snapped on.
  • Check if the sensor is worn correctly on your chest.
  • Verify that the battery is correctly installed and not depleted. Replace if necessary.
  • Ensure your receiving device/app is within range and actively searching for sensors.
  • Try re-pairing the sensor with your device/app.
Inconsistent or erratic heart rate readings:
  • Re-moisten the electrodes on the chest strap.
  • Adjust the chest strap for a snugger fit.
  • Ensure there are no strong electromagnetic interference sources nearby.
  • Check the battery level; a low battery can affect accuracy.
Cannot connect to device/app:
  • Make sure Bluetooth (BLE) or ANT+ is enabled on your device.
  • Ensure the HR1 sensor is active (green light flashing).
  • Check if the device/app is compatible with BLE 5.0 or ANT+.
  • Try restarting your device/app and the HR1 sensor (by removing and reinserting the battery).
  • If connecting via ANT+, ensure your device supports ANT+ sensors.

8. User Tips

  • Battery Awareness: Remember that the CR2032 battery is not included. Always have a spare on hand, especially for long training sessions.
  • Compatibility Check: While the HR1 supports a wide range of devices (Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, Suunto, XOSS G+), always confirm compatibility with your specific model before use.
  • Data Accuracy: For the most accurate readings, ensure the electrodes are well-moistened and the strap is snug. The advanced algorithms help maintain stable data even during intense activity.
  • Immediate Wake-up: The sensor wakes up instantly upon detecting a heart rate signal, so you don't need to manually switch it on. Just put it on and connect.
