SEAFLO Bilge Pump Panel Switch SFSP-015-02 Instruction Manual

Model: SFSP-015-02

1. Introduction

The SEAFLO Bilge Pump Panel Switch SFSP-015-02 is a marine-grade control panel designed for operating bilge pumps equipped with an automatic float switch. This panel provides three operational positions: Automatic, Off, and Manual. It features a 'fail-safe' spring return to the 'Off' position from 'Manual' to prevent continuous manual operation. The panel is constructed from black aluminum and includes an LED indicator to show when the switch is active. It is designed for simple, clean, and easy installation, offering reliable control and protection against intermittent high current for your bilge pump system.

2. Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power before installing or servicing any electrical components.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated to prevent short circuits and corrosion, especially in a marine environment.
  • Install an appropriately rated fuse in the positive power line to protect the circuit.
  • Do not exceed the maximum current rating of 15A for this switch.
  • Consult a qualified marine electrician if you are unsure about any part of the installation process.
  • Keep the panel dry and free from excessive moisture or direct water spray.

4.1 Mounting

  1. Choose a suitable, dry location on your vessel's dashboard or panel for mounting.
  2. Refer to Figure 2 for the exact dimensions (75mm x 63mm) and mounting hole positions.
  3. Drill four mounting holes with a diameter of Ø0.16in (4mm) and a cutout for the switch body.
  4. Secure the panel using appropriate fasteners (not included).

4.2 Wiring Connections

The switch is designed to control a bilge pump that has an integrated or external float switch. Follow the wiring diagram in Figure 2 carefully:

  • Red Wire: Connect to the positive (+) terminal of your 12V or 24V DC power source, ensuring an inline fuse (rated for 15A or appropriate for your pump) is installed on this line.
  • Brown Wire: Connect to the positive (+) wire of your bilge pump. This wire provides power to the pump when the switch is in 'Manual' mode.
  • Black Wire: Connect to the negative (-) terminal of your power source (ground).
  • Float Switch Connection: The float switch (not part of this panel) should be wired between the positive power source and the 'Automatic' input of the bilge pump (if the pump supports separate auto/manual inputs) or in series with the brown wire to enable automatic operation through the pump's internal logic. The panel switch itself manages the AUTO/MANUAL selection.

Ensure all connections are tight, corrosion-free, and properly sealed, especially in a marine environment.

5. Operation

The SEAFLO Bilge Pump Panel Switch features a three-position toggle switch for controlling your bilge pump:

  • AUTO (Automatic): In this position, the bilge pump will operate automatically, activated by its float switch. The pump will turn on when the water level rises and activates the float switch, and turn off when the water level drops and the float switch deactivates.
  • OFF: In this central position, the bilge pump is completely off. Neither manual nor automatic operation will occur. The LED indicator will be off.
  • MAN (Manual): In this position, the bilge pump will run continuously, regardless of the water level or the float switch position. The switch has a 'fail-safe' spring return, meaning it will automatically return to the 'OFF' position when released from 'MAN'. This prevents accidental continuous operation and potential battery drain. The LED indicator will be on when held in 'MAN'.

The LED indicator on the panel illuminates when the pump is actively running, either in 'AUTO' (when activated by the float switch) or when held in 'MAN'.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your bilge pump panel switch:

  • Periodic Inspection: Regularly check the panel and wiring for any signs of corrosion, loose connections, or damage.
  • Cleaning: Clean the panel surface with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish or markings.
  • Environmental Protection: While designed for marine use, protecting the panel from direct, prolonged exposure to saltwater spray or extreme weather conditions will extend its life.
  • Fuse Check: If the pump stops working, check the inline fuse first. Replace it with a fuse of the correct rating if blown.

7. Troubleshooting

If your bilge pump system is not functioning as expected, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pump does not run in any position. No power to the switch or pump. Blown fuse. Loose wiring connection. Faulty pump.Check battery voltage. Inspect inline fuse and replace if necessary. Verify all wiring connections are secure. Test the pump directly if possible.
Pump runs in MAN but not AUTO.Faulty float switch. Float switch stuck. Wiring issue to float switch.Inspect the float switch for obstructions or damage. Test the float switch functionality. Check wiring between the float switch and the pump/panel.
LED indicator does not light up when pump is running.Faulty LED. Wiring issue to LED.This typically indicates a minor issue with the indicator circuit. The pump should still function if power is supplied. Contact support if this is a concern.
Switch feels loose or sticky.Wear and tear. Debris in switch mechanism.Ensure the panel is clean. If the switch mechanism is faulty, replacement may be necessary.

8. User Tips

  • Always test your bilge pump system, including the float switch and panel, before heading out on the water.
  • Consider carrying spare fuses of the correct rating for your bilge pump circuit.
  • For optimal performance and safety, ensure your bilge pump and float switch are also regularly cleaned and free of debris.
