1. Product Overview
The SUNSUN Silent External Aquarium Filter series (HW-604, HW-604B, EW-604, EW-604B) provides efficient and quiet filtration for your aquarium. These filter buckets are designed to maintain clear and healthy water conditions for fish and aquatic life. The series includes models with and without an integrated pump, offering flexibility for various aquarium setups.
The 'B' models (HW-604B, EW-604B) come with an integrated pump, while the non-'B' models (HW-604, EW-604) are designed to be used with an external pump or as a pre-filter.

4. Setup Instructions
- Unpack and Inspect: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
- Prepare Filter Media: Rinse the included filter sponges thoroughly under clean water to remove any manufacturing dust. Arrange them inside the filter bucket.
- Connect Hoses:
- For HW-604B / EW-604B (with pump): Connect the provided 16mm hoses to the inlet and outlet connectors on the filter bucket. Ensure a secure fit to prevent leaks.
- For HW-604 / EW-604 (without pump): Connect your external pump's inlet and outlet hoses (16mm diameter) to the filter bucket's connectors.
- Positioning: Place the filter bucket below the aquarium water level to ensure proper water flow and priming.
- Install Inlet/Outlet Pipes: Assemble the inlet and outlet piping kit (refer to Figure 3 for typical configuration) and secure them inside your aquarium using suction cups. The inlet pipe should be positioned to draw water from the aquarium, and the outlet pipe to return filtered water.
- Priming (for HW-604B / EW-604B): Once all connections are secure and the filter is positioned, fill the filter bucket with aquarium water before starting the pump. This helps to remove air and ensures proper operation.
- Final Checks: Double-check all hose connections and ensure the filter lid is securely fastened.
5. Operating Instructions
- Power On: Once setup is complete and all checks are done, plug in the power cord (for HW-604B / EW-604B) or turn on your external pump (for HW-604 / EW-604).
- Check for Leaks: Immediately after starting, observe the filter and all connections for any signs of leaks. Address any leaks promptly by tightening connections.
- Monitor Flow: Ensure a steady flow of water is returning to the aquarium. Initial air bubbles are normal and should dissipate within a few minutes.
- Continuous Operation: For optimal water quality, the filter should run continuously.
Safety Precautions:
- Always unplug the filter (or external pump) from the power outlet before performing any maintenance or handling the unit.
- Do not operate the filter if the power cord or plug is damaged.
- Ensure your hands are dry when plugging or unplugging the unit.
- Keep the filter bucket on a stable, level surface.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your filter.
- Filter Media Cleaning (Monthly or as needed):
- Unplug the filter (or external pump).
- Close the inlet and outlet valves (if applicable) to prevent water backflow.
- Disconnect the hoses from the filter bucket.
- Carefully open the filter lid.
- Remove the filter sponges and rinse them thoroughly in old aquarium water (from a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Do NOT use tap water directly, as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria.
- Replace heavily soiled or degraded sponges with new ones.
- Reassemble the filter, ensuring the lid is sealed properly and hoses are reconnected securely.
- Impeller Cleaning (Every 3-6 months): For models with an integrated pump (HW-604B / EW-604B), periodically clean the impeller to prevent blockages and maintain flow rate. Refer to the detailed PDF manual for specific instructions on accessing the impeller.
- Hose and Pipe Cleaning: Over time, algae and debris can build up in hoses and pipes, reducing flow. Clean them periodically using a flexible brush.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No water flow / Low flow | Clogged filter media; Air in system; Impeller blockage (B models); Kinked hoses; Insufficient priming. | Clean filter media; Re-prime the filter; Clean impeller (B models); Straighten hoses; Ensure filter is below water level. |
| Filter is noisy | Air trapped inside; Impeller obstruction/wear (B models); Filter not level. | Re-prime to remove air; Clean/inspect impeller (B models); Ensure filter is on a stable, level surface. |
| Water leaking | Loose hose connections; Damaged O-ring/gasket; Improperly sealed lid. | Tighten all hose connections; Inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets if damaged; Ensure lid is correctly seated and clamped. |
| Water remains cloudy | Insufficient filtration; Overfeeding; New tank syndrome; Filter media saturated. | Clean/replace filter media; Reduce feeding; Perform partial water changes; Ensure proper biological filtration is established. |
8. User Tips
- Hose Compatibility: The filter uses 16mm inlet and outlet connections. When using the HW-604 or EW-604 models (without pump), ensure your external pump and existing plumbing are compatible with 16mm hoses for a secure and leak-free connection.
- Filter Media Customization: While sponges are included, these canister filters allow for customization of filter media. Consider adding biological media (e.g., ceramic rings, bio-balls) and chemical media (e.g., activated carbon, ammonia removers) to enhance filtration based on your aquarium's needs.
- Regular Water Changes: Filtration is essential, but it does not replace the need for regular partial water changes to maintain overall water quality and remove nitrates.
