Setup Instructions

1. Battery Installation and Charging

The radio comes with an 1800mAh Li-ion battery. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

  1. To install the battery, align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it upwards until it clicks into place.
  2. To remove, press the PUSH button above the battery and slide it downwards.
  3. Connect the USB Type-C charger to the charging port on the side of the radio.
  4. The radio supports multiple charging methods: Wall Charging, Car Charging, Power Bank, and PC Charging.

2. Antenna Attachment

Screw the antenna clockwise into the antenna connector on top of the radio until it is firmly seated. Ensure a secure connection for optimal signal performance.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Controls and Display

Familiarize yourself with the radio's layout:

  • Power/Volume Switch (6): Rotate clockwise to turn on and increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease volume and turn off.
  • PTT (Push-to-Talk) Button (9): Press and hold to transmit, release to receive.
  • Screen Display (7): 1.6 Inch Dot Matrix Display shows frequency, channel, battery status, and other operational information.
  • Programmable Side Keys (10, 11): These buttons can be customized for various functions like Flashlight (PF1 short press), Emergency Alarm (PF1 long press), or FM Radio (PF2).

2. Channel and Frequency Selection

  • Channel Mode: Use the up/down arrow keys to navigate through pre-programmed channels.
  • VFO Mode (Frequency Mode): Allows manual input of frequencies. Press the V/M button to switch between Channel and VFO modes. Use the numeric keypad to enter desired frequencies.

3. Frequency Measurement and Copy

The radio can measure and copy frequencies and sub-audio tones (CTCSS/DCS) from other devices. For accurate measurement, ensure the distance between the transmitting and receiving radios is within 1 meter.

4. Power Selection

Adjust the transmit power (5W/3W/1W for RA685, 5W/0.5W for RA85) based on your communication needs to optimize battery life and range.

5. Emergency Functions

  • One-click Alarm: For emergency situations, activate the alarm function (often assigned to a programmable side key).

6. VOX Function

The Voice Operated Exchange (VOX) function allows you to transmit by speaking into the microphone without pressing the PTT button. This is useful for hands-free operation.

7. Digital FM Radio

The radio includes a digital FM radio function (65-108MHz). Refer to the user manual for specific instructions on tuning and saving FM stations.

8. NOAA Weather Channels (RA85 GMRS Version Only)

The RA85 GMRS version can receive 10 NOAA weather channels, providing real-time weather forecasts. This feature is crucial for outdoor activities and emergency preparedness.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the radio's surface. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care:
    • Avoid overcharging or completely discharging the battery.
    • Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
    • If the battery is not used for a long time, charge it once a month to maintain battery life.
  • Storage: Store the radio in a dry, dust-free environment away from extreme temperatures.
  • Antenna: Ensure the antenna is securely attached. Do not bend or force the antenna, as this can damage the radio.
