6. Operating Instructions

The SmallRig S20 offers versatile recording options to suit different scenarios.

6.1. Understanding Polar Pattern

Diagram illustrating the cardioid pick-up pattern of the microphone, showing effective sound capture from the front and reduced sensitivity from the sides and rear.

Image: Cardioid Pattern Pick-up Mode - This diagram visually explains how the cardioid pattern effectively picks up sound from the front of the microphone while reducing sensitivity from the sides and behind, aiding in active noise reduction for clearer sound.

The S20 features a cardioid polar pattern, which means it effectively and strongly records audio from the front of the microphone, while reducing sensitivity from the side and behind. This helps in minimizing background noise and focusing on the desired sound source.

6.2. Recording Modes

The S20 supports various recording configurations:

Four diagrams showing different microphone setups and their corresponding audio tracks and scenes: On-camera Microphone + 'M' Mode for short videos, Lavalier Microphone for single interviews, On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + 'M' Mode for vlogs, and On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + 'S' Mode for multi-person interviews/short videos with dual-track recording.

Image: Four Mode Options, Suitable for Different Scenes and Recording Situations - This image details four distinct microphone setups: On-camera Microphone + 'M' Mode (Mono) for short videos, Lavalier Microphone for single interviews/recording, On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + 'M' Mode (Mono) for vlogs, and On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + 'S' Mode (Stereo) for multi-person interviews/short videos, suitable for post-editing with dual-track recording.

  1. On-camera Microphone + "M" (Mono) Mode: Ideal for short videos. Provides a single audio track. (Novice Friendly)
  2. Lavalier Microphone Only: Suitable for single interviews or recordings. Provides a single audio track. (Novice Friendly)
  3. On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + "M" (Mono) Mode: Best for vlogs. Combines both microphones into a single audio track. (Novice Friendly)
  4. On-camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone + "S" (Stereo) Mode: Designed for multi-person interviews or advanced short videos. This mode provides two (left/right) dual audio channels, making it suitable for post-editing. To achieve dual-track recording in stereo ("S") mode, connect a microphone with a 3.5mm TRS plug (such as the Lavalier microphone in the kit) to the input.

6.3. Dual Track Recording Demonstration

The SmallRig S20 supports dual-track recording, allowing for separate left and right audio channels when using both the on-camera and lavalier microphones in stereo mode. This feature provides greater flexibility during post-production for mixing and editing.

Video: Product Demonstration - This video showcases the microphone's features, including its setup on various devices (DSLR, smartphone), its ability to capture clear audio (demonstrated with a cat's purr), and the dual-track recording capability in editing software, showing separate L and R audio channels.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphone and its accessories in the provided plush velveteen fabric storage pouch to protect them from dust and damage.
  • Cable Care: Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the cables to prevent internal damage.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Sound/Low Volume:
    • Ensure all cables are securely connected.
    • Verify the correct cable (TRS for cameras, TRRS for smartphones) is being used.
    • Check the microphone input settings on your recording device.
    • Ensure the microphone is pointed towards the sound source.
    • If using a lavalier mic, ensure it is properly plugged into the on-camera mic's input.
  • Excessive Background Noise:
    • Ensure the microphone is in the appropriate mode (Mono for single focus, Stereo for broader soundstage).
    • Utilize the cardioid polar pattern by positioning the microphone correctly towards the desired sound source.
    • Attach the furry or foam windscreens, especially in outdoor or windy environments.
  • Compatibility Issues with Smartphones:
    • For iPhone 7 and newer models, an original Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter may be required (not included).
