5. Installation and Setup
Follow these steps to properly install your Sunsun HW Series filter:
5.1 Unpacking and Component Check
Carefully unpack all components. Verify that all parts listed in Section 3.2 are present and undamaged. If you have a 'B' series model, ensure the circulating power water pump is included.
5.2 Filter Media Preparation
The filter bucket is loaded with three layers of filter cotton (hydrophobic, medium, thick) for physical filtration. You may customize or replace these with other filtering materials suitable for biological filtration to meet your aquarium's specific needs.

5.3 Connecting Hoses and Valves
Connect the inlet and outlet pipes to the filter head. Use the provided regulating valves (if applicable) to control water flow. Ensure all connections are secure to prevent leaks.

5.4 Placement and Water Circulation
Place the filter canister below the aquarium water level. Position the inlet pipe (intake) and outlet pipe (return) inside the aquarium. The inlet pipe draws water into the filter, and the outlet pipe returns filtered water to the tank.

6. Operation
6.1 Priming the Filter
Before starting the filter, ensure the canister is filled with water. For models without a pump (HW-602, HW-603), you will need to manually prime the system or use an external pump to fill the canister and establish water flow. For 'B' series models, the integrated pump will assist in priming.
6.2 Starting the Filter
Once the filter is primed and all connections are secure, plug in the power cord (for 'B' series models or your external pump). The filter should start circulating water. Adjust the flow rate using the regulating valves as needed.

7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and water quality.
7.1 Cleaning Filter Media
Periodically clean or replace the filter sponges and other media. The frequency depends on your aquarium's bioload. To access the media, turn off the filter, disconnect power, and unclip the secure clips on the filter head.

7.2 Pump Maintenance (for 'B' series)
For 'B' series models, inspect the pump impeller and shaft for debris or wear. The pump features a durable stainless steel shaft for longevity and ease of cleaning.
7.3 General Cleaning
Clean the filter canister, hoses, and inlet/outlet pipes as needed to prevent buildup and maintain efficient flow.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your filter, try the following:
- Reduced Flow: Check if filter media is clogged and requires cleaning. Ensure hoses are not kinked or obstructed. Verify that the regulating valves are fully open.
- No Water Flow: Ensure the filter is properly primed and filled with water. Check power connection for 'B' series models or external pump. Verify that the pump impeller is not jammed.
- Leaks: Check all hose connections and O-rings for proper seating and tightness. Ensure the filter head is securely clipped to the canister.
- Excessive Noise: For 'B' series models, check the pump impeller for debris. Ensure the filter is placed on a stable surface to minimize vibrations.
9. User Tips
- Verify Contents: Upon receiving your filter, carefully check the package contents against the component list to ensure you have all necessary parts, especially if you ordered a model without a pump.
- Media Customization: The multi-layer design allows for easy customization of filter media. Consider adding biological media for enhanced ammonia and nitrite removal.
- Regular Cleaning: Consistent cleaning of filter media and hoses will prevent flow reduction and maintain optimal water quality.
- Placement: Always ensure the filter is placed below the aquarium water level for proper gravity-fed priming and efficient operation.
