2. Safety Information

WARNING: This meter is a high-voltage test equipment. Failure to follow safety precautions can result in electric shock or serious injury.

  1. Before use, inspect the meter for any damage. Discontinue use and perform necessary repairs if:
    • The casing is visibly damaged (cracks, broken parts).
    • Test leads have broken insulation.
    • The instrument was severely impacted during transport.
    • The meter has been stored improperly (e.g., in a humid environment).
  2. Do not open the meter casing during measurement.
  3. During measurement, high voltage is present on the test leads. Avoid direct contact with bare wires or metal parts of the test leads.
  4. Even if phase indicators are not lit, a voltage loop may still be present. Exercise caution to prevent electric shock.
  5. Do not measure circuit voltages exceeding 600V AC.
  6. Observe continuous use time limits: no more than 60 minutes at 200V ACV, and no more than 4 minutes at 600V ACV.
  7. Do not use the meter outdoors in rain or in highly humid environments.
  8. Keep the instrument away from water, corrosive liquids, direct sunlight, high temperatures, and excessive humidity.
  9. Only qualified professionals should open the meter casing for service.
  10. Operators must be trained in high-voltage operation and measurement, and strictly follow this manual.
  11. Keep this manual accessible for future reference.

3. Product Overview

Components:

  • LED Indicators for Open Phase Check: Three orange LEDs (U, V, W) indicate the presence of each phase (L1, L2, L3 or R, S, T).
  • LED Indicators for Phase Sequence Check: One red LED (CCW) and one green LED (CW) indicate counter-clockwise and clockwise phase rotation, respectively.
  • Wrist Strap: For secure handling and to prevent accidental drops.
  • Test Leads: Color-coded for easy identification:
    • Red: Corresponds to U (R) phase (L1).
    • Yellow: Corresponds to V (Y) phase (L2).
    • Green: Corresponds to W (B) phase (L3).
  • Test Clips: Three clips are provided for convenient and secure connection to test points.

5. Setup

Before operating the SM852B, ensure you have read and understood all safety information. No batteries are required for operation as the device draws power from the circuit being tested.

  1. Inspect the Device: Visually check the meter and its test leads for any signs of damage (cracks, frayed wires, etc.). Do not use if damaged.
  2. Attach Test Clips: For convenience and safety, attach the provided test clips to the metal probes of the test leads. Ensure they are securely tightened.
  3. Secure the Meter: Use the wrist strap to prevent accidental drops, especially when working at heights or in challenging environments.

6. Operation

The SM852B is designed for straightforward operation to determine phase sequence and open phase conditions in three-phase AC circuits.

  1. Connect Test Probes: Carefully connect the test probes (with attached clips) to the wires of the three-phase circuit you wish to test. Ensure the connections are firm and secure. The color coding of the leads (Red for U/L1, Yellow for V/L2, Green for W/L3) helps in identifying phases.
  2. Observe Indicators: Once connected, the meter will automatically indicate the circuit status:
    • Open Phase Check: The three orange LEDs (U, V, W) will illuminate if the corresponding phase is present. If any LED does not light up, it indicates an open phase condition for that specific phase.
    • Phase Sequence Check:
      • If the green LED (CW - Clockwise) illuminates and the buzzer sounds, the phase sequence is correct (clockwise rotation).
      • If the red LED (CCW - Counter-Clockwise) illuminates and the buzzer sounds, the phase sequence is reversed (counter-clockwise rotation).
  3. Interpret Results: Based on the LED indications and buzzer sound, you can determine if all phases are present and if the phase rotation is correct.
  4. Disconnect Safely: After testing, carefully disconnect the test probes from the circuit, ensuring no contact with live parts.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No LED indication or buzzer sound:
    • Check if the voltage of the circuit is within the measurable range (60V-600V AC).
    • Ensure test leads are securely connected to the circuit.
    • Verify that the circuit itself is live and not de-energized.
    • Inspect test leads for damage or breaks.
  • Incorrect phase sequence indication:
    • Double-check the connections of the test leads to the phases (U, V, W or L1, L2, L3) to ensure they match the expected order.
    • If the indication is consistently reversed, the phase rotation in the circuit is indeed counter-clockwise.
  • Intermittent readings:
    • Ensure all connections are clean and free from corrosion or loose contact.
    • Avoid using the device beyond its specified continuous use time limits, especially at higher voltages.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the meter's casing with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the meter in its portable cloth bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and corrosive substances.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the test leads and the meter's casing for any signs of wear or damage. Replace damaged components immediately.

9. User Tips

  • Always prioritize safety. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with live electrical circuits.
  • For clearer readings in noisy environments, rely on the LED indicators in addition to the buzzer.
  • Utilize the test clips for hands-free and more secure connections, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Keep the instruction manual handy for quick reference on specifications and safety guidelines.
