4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Device Layout and Controls

- Trigger: Press to activate the laser and take a temperature reading.
- LED Screen: Displays temperature readings, mode, emissivity, and other indicators.
- A/UP Button (Laser Light & Up): Activates/deactivates the laser target. Used for navigating menus or increasing values.
- V/DN Button (Back Light / Down): Activates/deactivates the backlight. Used for navigating menus or decreasing values.
- MODE Button: Cycles through different measurement modes (e.g., MAX, MIN, AVG, HAL, LAL).
- MEM Button: Accesses stored measurement data.
- °C/°F Button: Toggles between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature units.
4.2 Taking a Measurement
- Point the thermometer at the target object.
- Press and hold the Trigger button. The laser pointer will activate (if enabled) to help aim.
- The temperature reading will appear on the LED screen.
- Release the Trigger button to hold the reading (Data Hold function).
4.3 Temperature Unit Conversion
To switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F), press the dedicated °C/°F button on the device.

4.4 Distance Spot Ratio (D:S)
The HP-985C-APP has a Distance Spot Ratio of 16:1. This means that at a distance of 16 units from the target, the measurement spot diameter will be 1 unit. For example, at 16 inches distance, the spot size is 1 inch. Maintaining an appropriate D:S ratio is crucial for accurate readings, especially when measuring small objects or from a distance. A higher D:S ratio allows for measuring smaller areas from further away, keeping you safe from heat and dangerous objects.

4.5 Emissivity Adjustment
The emissivity (ε) of a surface describes its effectiveness in emitting energy as thermal radiation. Different materials have different emissivities. For accurate measurements, adjust the emissivity setting on your thermometer to match the material being measured. The HP-985C-APP has an adjustable emissivity from 0.1 to 1.0. Refer to common emissivity tables for typical values of various materials.
4.6 Advanced Functions
- MAX/MIN/AVG Value: Use the MODE button to cycle through and display the maximum, minimum, or average temperature recorded during a measurement session.
- High/Low Temperature Alarm: The device can be set to alert you when temperatures exceed or fall below predefined thresholds.
- Backlight: The display backlight can be toggled for visibility in various lighting conditions.
- Auto Power Off: The thermometer will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
- Data Hold: Automatically holds the last measured temperature on the display after releasing the trigger.
5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the exterior of the thermometer. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the lens clean and free of dust or debris for accurate readings.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Refer to section 3.1 for detailed instructions.
- Storage: Store the thermometer in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The recommended storage temperature is -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F) without the battery installed.
6. Troubleshooting
- No Power: Check if the battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace the battery if necessary.
- Inaccurate Readings:
- Ensure the Distance Spot Ratio (D:S) is appropriate for your target and distance.
- Verify that the emissivity setting matches the material being measured.
- Check if the lens is clean and unobstructed.
- Avoid measuring through glass or other transparent surfaces, as infrared thermometers measure the surface temperature of the glass, not the object behind it.
- App Connectivity Issues: Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both the thermometer and your mobile device. Restart both devices and try reconnecting.
- High/Low Alarm Not Triggering: Verify that the alarm thresholds are correctly set in the device's settings or through the mobile app.

8. User Tips
- Surface Preparation: For highly reflective surfaces, consider applying a piece of masking tape or flat black paint to the area you wish to measure. Allow time for the tape/paint to reach the object's temperature, then measure the temperature of the prepared surface.
- Environmental Factors: Be aware that steam, dust, smoke, and other particles in the air can interfere with infrared measurements. Try to measure in clear conditions.
- Response Time: The thermometer has a fast response time of 500ms. This allows for quick scanning of large areas to identify hot or cold spots.
- Laser Pointer: The laser pointer is for aiming only. The actual temperature measurement is taken from the infrared sensor, which has a wider field of view than the laser dot.
