1. Introduction
The Launch Creader VII Plus is a comprehensive diagnostic instrument designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles, including those utilizing Controller Area Network (CAN). This tool assists users in reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and viewing live data for various vehicle systems.
1.1 Vehicle Coverage
This diagnostic tool is specifically designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles. For 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles, verify OBD II compliance by checking the Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) Label, usually located under the hood or by the radiator. The label should state "OBD II Certified".
All OBD II compliant vehicles are mandated to have a standard 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC).
1.2 On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II Overview
The OBD II system monitors emission control systems and key engine components through continuous or periodic tests. It provides information on:
- Whether the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is commanded “on” or “off”.
- Which Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored.
- Readiness Monitor status.
1.3 OBD II Definitions
- EOBD:
- European On-Board Diagnostics. Essentially the same as OBD II, with the same Data Link Connector and Communication Protocols.
- Communication Protocols:
- Allows different systems and sensors in a vehicle to communicate. Supported protocols include CAN Bus, J1850 VPW, ISO 9141-2, J1850 PWM, and ISO 14230 KWP.
- PCM (Powertrain Control Module):
- The vehicle's “on-board computer” that controls engine management, emissions, and transmission operation.
- DLC (Data Link Connector):
- The 16-cavity connector on the vehicle for communication with diagnostic tools.
- MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light):
- The vehicle's "Check Engine” warning light that activates when a DTC is stored.
- DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code):
- A code stored in the computer system's memory, identifying a fault condition.
- Freeze Frame Data:
- Operating conditions stored when a DTC is set.
- PID (Parameter Identification Data):
- Data returned by the vehicle's control modules.
- Monitors:
- Diagnostic routines in the PCM that run tests on emissions-related components.
- Enabling Criteria:
- Vehicle-specific events or conditions that must occur before monitors run.
- Drive Cycle:
- A specific mode of vehicle operation to set readiness monitors.
- FT (Fuel Trim):
- Feedback adjustments to the base fuel schedule (short-term for instantaneous, long-term for gradual changes).
1.4 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
DTCs are five-digit alphanumeric identifiers for fault conditions. They are categorized as:
- Pending: Fault identified during a Drive Cycle but not yet meeting MIL activation criteria.
- Stored: Fault occurred and met MIL activation criteria.
- Permanent: Stored DTC that can only be cleared by the OBD II system after repairs and a set number of Driving Cycles.
The first character indicates the control system (P=Powertrain, B=Body, C=Chassis, U=Network). The second character (0-3) indicates the code type (Generic or Manufacturer Specific). The remaining three characters (0-9 or A-F) provide specific fault information.
1.5 Location of the Data Link Connector (DLC)
The DLC is typically a 16-pin connector located within 12 inches of the instrument panel, usually under or around the driver's side. For some vehicles, the location may vary. If you cannot find the DLC, consult your vehicle's service manual.
