10 Delay Functions:

The relay offers 5 time functions controlled by supply voltage, 4 time functions controlled by control input, and 1 function of a latching relay.

  1. On Delay (Power on): Delay starts when power is applied.
  2. Interval (Power on): Output activates for a set interval after power on.
  3. Repeat Cycle (Starting off): Cyclic operation starting with an OFF period.
  4. Repeat Cycle (Starting on): Cyclic operation starting with an ON period.
  5. Off Delay (S Break): Delay starts when the control input 'S' breaks.
  6. Single Shot (Single Shot Trailing Edge): Output activates for a set time on the trailing edge of the control input 'S'.
  7. Single Shot (Non-Retriggerable): Output activates for a set time on the leading edge of 'S', not retriggerable during the cycle.
  8. On/Off Delay: Combination of on-delay and off-delay.
  9. Latching Relay: Output latches ON/OFF with successive pulses to 'S'.
  10. Pulse Generator: Generates a pulse of a set duration.

Figure 4: Asymmetric Cycler Relay settings for ON (t1) and OFF (t2) time adjustment.

For asymmetric cycler relays (e.g., GRT8-S1, GRT8-S2), both ON time (t1) and OFF time (t2) can be adjusted independently. The time percentage setting allows fine-tuning within the selected time range.

4. Installation

The GRT8 M1/M2 Time Relay is designed for DIN rail mounting (EN/IEC 60715). Ensure proper electrical safety procedures are followed during installation.

4.1 Wiring Diagram

Refer to the wiring diagrams below for correct connection of the relay to your system. Always ensure power is disconnected before performing any wiring.

Figure 5: Detailed Wiring Diagram for GRT8-M1 (1SPDT) and GRT8-M2 (2SPDT) relays. Shows connections for A1, S, A2, Un, and output contacts (15, 16, 18 for M1; 15, 16, 18, 25, 26, 28 for M2).

4.2 Wiring Example (E Function)

This example demonstrates wiring for the 'E Function' (Off Delay with S Break).

Relay Wiring Example for E Function, showing connections for L, N, Trigger (S), A1, A2, and a lamp
Figure 6: Relay Wiring Example for E Function.

E Function Operation:

  • The relay is powered up.
  • When the trigger 'S' is not connected, the bulb will not light.
  • When 'S' and A1 are connected, the bulb will turn on.
  • When 'S' is disconnected, the bulb will turn off after the set delay time.

Contact Configuration for E Function:

  • 15-18 is Normally Open (NO)
  • 15-16 is Normally Closed (NC)

Sequence for E Function:

  1. Trigger terminal 'S' is closed.
  2. Relay works (output contacts change state).
  3. 15-18 closes, 15-16 disconnects.
  4. Trigger terminal 'S' disconnects, and the delay starts.
  5. After the set delay time, 15-18 disconnects and 15-16 closes.

5. Operation

The GRT8 M1/M2 relay features intuitive knob controls for setting time and selecting functions.

5.1 Time Adjustment

Use the top knob to select the time range and the middle knob to set the percentage within that range.

Figure 7: Knob Time Adjustment Diagram.

Example Settings:

  • To set a 5-second delay: Set knob 1 to '10s' and knob 2 to '50%'.
  • To set a 1-minute delay: Set knob 1 to '1m' and knob 2 to '100%'.

5.2 Function Selection

The bottom knob allows you to select one of the ten available delay functions (A through J).

Refer to the '10 Delay Functions' list in Section 3 for a detailed description of each function (A-J).

6. Maintenance

The GRT8 M1/M2 Multifunction Time Relay is designed for long-term, reliable operation with minimal maintenance. Follow these general guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Keep the relay clean and free from dust and debris. Use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Check for any signs of physical damage to the casing or terminals.
  • Environment: Ensure the operating environment remains within the specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent premature wear or malfunction.
  • Power Cycle: If the device behaves unexpectedly, a simple power cycle (turning off and on the main power supply) can often resolve minor issues.

No user-serviceable parts are inside the unit. Do not attempt to open or repair the relay yourself, as this may void the warranty and pose a safety risk.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your GRT8 M1/M2 Time Relay, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power/No LED Indication:
    • Check the power supply voltage to ensure it is within the specified AC/DC 12V-240V range.
    • Verify that the A1 and A2 terminals are correctly wired and receiving power.
    • Inspect the circuit breaker or fuse protecting the relay for trips or blowouts.
  • Incorrect Timing/Function:
    • Ensure the time range knob (top) and percentage knob (middle) are set correctly for the desired delay.
    • Verify that the function selection knob (bottom) is set to the intended delay mode (A-J).
    • Confirm that the control input 'S' (if used by the selected function) is wired correctly and receiving the expected signal.
  • Output Not Activating/Deactivating:
    • Check the load connected to the output contacts (15, 16, 18 for M1; 15, 16, 18, 25, 26, 28 for M2) to ensure it is within the 16A/AC1 rating.
    • Verify that the load is correctly wired to the Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) contacts as required by your application.
    • Ensure the relay is receiving power and the selected function is being triggered as expected.
  • Intermittent Operation:
    • Check for loose wiring connections at all terminals.
    • Ensure the operating environment is stable and free from excessive electrical noise or temperature fluctuations.

If the problem persists after these steps, contact customer support for further assistance.

8. User Tips

  • Test Before Deployment: Always test your relay setup with a non-critical load before integrating it into a live system to ensure all timing and functions operate as intended.
  • Clear Labeling: For complex setups, clearly label all wires and connections to the relay to simplify future troubleshooting or modifications.
  • Consider Environmental Factors: While sealed, avoid installing the relay in areas with excessive moisture, dust, or extreme temperatures to maximize its lifespan.
  • Understand Functions: Take time to thoroughly understand each of the 10 delay functions to select the most appropriate one for your specific application.
