5. Initial Setup

Battery Installation

The UT161 series multimeters require four 1.5V AAA (R03) batteries. These are not included in the package.

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads from the input terminals.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw(s) securing the battery cover.
  4. Remove the battery cover.
  5. Insert four 1.5V AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment.
  6. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw(s) securely.

The meter is now ready for use.

6. Operating Modes

To perform a measurement, rotate the function range knob switch to the desired function. Use the 'SELECT' button to toggle between different sub-functions if available (e.g., AC/DC voltage, diode/continuity).

General Measurement Steps:

  1. Insert the black test lead into the 'COM' jack.
  2. Insert the red test lead into the appropriate input jack for your measurement (e.g., 'V Ω' for voltage/resistance, 'mA μA' for low current, '10A MAX' for high current).
  3. Select the desired function using the rotary switch.
  4. Connect the test leads to the circuit or component under test.
  5. Read the measurement value on the LCD display.

Specific Measurement Functions:

  • AC/DC Voltage Measurement (V~ / V=): Connect leads to the circuit in parallel. The meter can measure up to 1000V.
  • AC/DC Current Measurement (A~ / A=, mA μA): Connect leads in series with the circuit. Ensure the correct input jack is used based on the expected current.
  • Resistance Measurement (Ω): Connect leads across the component. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  • Capacitance Measurement (F): Connect leads across the capacitor. Ensure the capacitor is discharged before measurement.
  • Frequency (Hz) / Duty Cycle (%): Connect leads to the signal source.
  • Diode Test / Continuity Test: Use for checking diodes and circuit continuity. An audible beep indicates continuity.
  • NCV (Non-Contact Voltage): Select NCV mode and bring the top of the meter near a live conductor to detect AC voltage without direct contact.
  • Temperature Measurement (UT161D only): Connect the temperature probe to the meter and place the probe tip on the object to be measured.

8. Maintenance

Cleaning:

  • Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
  • Keep the terminals clean to avoid inaccurate readings.

Battery Replacement:

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to ensure continued accurate operation. Refer to the 'Battery Installation' section for detailed steps.

Storage:

  • If the meter is not to be used for a long period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage.
  • Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

9. Troubleshooting

If your multimeter is not functioning as expected, check the following common issues:

  • No display or faint display: Check battery installation and charge level. Replace batteries if necessary.
  • Incorrect readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected, the correct function is selected, and the circuit is within the meter's measurement range. Clean input terminals.
  • No continuity beep: Ensure the continuity function is selected and test leads are making good contact.
  • Fuse blown (for current measurements): If current measurements are consistently zero or incorrect, the fuse might be blown. Refer to a qualified technician for fuse replacement.

10. User Tips

  • Sound Ring Interruption: Some users have noted that the sound for continuity testing might briefly interrupt if test leads are shorted and held for 3-5 seconds. This is generally normal behavior and not indicative of a fault.
  • Fuse Rating vs. Max Current: For the UT161E, while the maximum current is rated at 20A, the fuse might be rated at 11A. This is a common design choice where the fuse protects against sustained overcurrents, while the meter can handle higher transient peaks or specific measurement durations up to its maximum rating. Always respect the fuse rating for continuous current.

11. Warranty and Support

The UNI-T UT161 series multimeters typically come with a 1-year warranty. For warranty claims, technical support, or service, please contact your original point of purchase or the official UNI-T service center in your region. Keep your purchase receipt as proof of purchase.
