3.2 Power Supply Installation

The OPM-15 operates on a 9V alkaline battery (450mAh) or an optional 9V AC adapter. To install the battery, open the battery compartment cover on the back of the device and insert a fresh 9V battery, observing polarity. For continuous operation or to conserve battery life, connect the optional AC adapter to a power outlet and the device's power input port.

3.3 Connector Installation

The OPM-15 features an interchangeable FC connector as standard. To use SC or ST connectors, simply unscrew the FC adapter and replace it with the appropriate SC or ST adapter. Ensure the connector is securely fastened to prevent inaccurate readings.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

Press the Power button (usually marked with a circle and vertical line) to turn the device on. The display will illuminate. To turn off, press and hold the Power button until the display goes blank. The device also features an auto-off function after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

4.2 Wavelength Selection

Press the λ button to cycle through the calibrated wavelengths: 850nm, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm, and 1625nm. Select the wavelength that matches your optical signal source for accurate measurements.

4.3 Measurement Modes (dB/dBm/mW/μW/W)

Press the μW/dB/dBm button to switch between different display units: dB, dBm, mW, μW, and W. Choose the unit appropriate for your measurement requirements.

4.4 Zeroing and Reference Setting

  • Zero: Press the Zero button to set the current power reading as a zero reference. This is useful for relative power measurements.
  • Set/Ref: Use the Set/Ref button to establish a reference power level for relative measurements (e.g., insertion loss). Connect your reference power source, press Set/Ref, and the display will show "REF" indicating the reference has been set. Subsequent measurements will be displayed relative to this reference.

4.5 MOD Tones Detection

The OPM-15 series supports MOD tones detection at 270Hz, 1KHz, and 2KHz. This feature is used for identifying specific modulated signals in fiber optic lines.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Optical Port

Regularly clean the optical connector port to ensure accurate measurements. Use a lint-free optical cleaning wipe and isopropyl alcohol, or a specialized fiber optic cleaning tool. Never touch the detector surface with bare hands.

5.2 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator shows low power, replace the 9V alkaline battery promptly. Ensure the device is powered off before opening the battery compartment.

5.3 Storage

Store the optical power meter in a clean, dry environment within the specified storage temperature range of -40ºC to 70ºC (-4 F to 158 F) and relative humidity of 0% to 95% (non-condensing). Always use the provided carrying pouch to protect the device from dust, moisture, and physical shock.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Check battery installation and charge level. If using an AC adapter, ensure it is properly connected and the power outlet is functional.
  • Inaccurate Readings:
    • Ensure the optical connector port is clean.
    • Verify that the selected wavelength on the OPM matches the wavelength of the optical signal source.
    • Check if the fiber optic cable is clean and properly connected.
    • Consider if the device requires recalibration.
  • Display Issues: If the display is dim or erratic, replace the battery. If the issue persists, contact support.
