INTRODUCTION

This application note provides a guide to testing compliance with RTCA DO-160 Sections 16, 18, 19 and MIL-STD-461 CS101 standards using AE Techron’s CIS-25 and DSR 400 test systems. These standards are critical for ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and immunity of avionics and military equipment. The CIS-25 and DSR 400 systems provide a versatile platform for conducting tests specified in these sections, offering high precision, reliability, and repeatability in meeting regulatory requirements.

Specifications

  • Standards: RTCA DO-160 Sections 16, 18, 19, MIL-STD-461 CS101, MIL-STD-704
  • Product: AE Techron CIS-25 and DSR 400 Test Systems
  • Functionality: Conducted and induced susceptibility testing for EMC and power immunity
  • Key Features: High precision, reliability, repeatability, complete standard coverage

MIL-STD-461 CS101
The MIL-STD-461 standard is used for EMC testing of military equipment, ensuring its ability to operate in electromagnetic environments. CS101 addresses conducted susceptibility, power leads (30 Hz to 150 kHz), testing equipment susceptibility to power line noise and interference.

MIL-STD 704
MIL-STD-704 is a military standard that establishes electrical power characteristics for aircraft. It provides guidelines for power quality, including voltage, frequency, and waveform requirements, to ensure compatibility and reliability of electrical systems in military aircraft. The standard aims to support safe operation and prevent malfunctions in avionics and other electrical equipment by defining specific parameters and tolerances for different operating conditions.

Key elements include

  • Voltage Levels: Specifications for various voltage levels used in aircraft systems.
  • Frequency: Requirements for AC power frequency, typically 400 Hz for aircraft.
  • Waveform Shape: Standards for the shape of power waveforms, including harmonics and transients.
  • Load Considerations: Guidelines for different types of electrical loads and their impacts on power quality.

Product Usage Instructions

CIS-25: Conducted/Induced Susceptibility Testing
The CIS-25 is designed for EMC and power immunity testing according to DO-160, Boeing, and MIL-STD-461 standards. Follow these steps:

  1. Connect the CIS-25 system to the equipment under test (EUT) following the provided instructions.
  2. Select the appropriate test category and level based on the standard being tested (DO-160 Section 18 or Section 19).
  3. Initiate the test sequence and monitor the system for any induced signal susceptibility or radio frequency susceptibility.
  4. Analyze the test results and ensure compliance with the specified standards.

DSR 400: Power Quality Testing
The DSR 400 system is used for testing power characteristics according to MIL-STD-704G. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Connect the DSR 400 system to the electrical system of the aircraft or equipment being tested.
  2. Configure the system for either single-phase or three-phase testing as required by the standard.
  3. Run the power quality tests to check voltage, frequency, and waveform requirements.
  4. Evaluate the test results against the specified parameters in MIL-STD-704G.

CIS-25: CONDUCTED/INDUCED SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING
The CIS-25 is an advanced test system designed specifically for EMC and power immunity testing in line with all tests DO-160, Boeing, and MIL-STD-461 standards. It has been designed to conduct all tests, at all levels, for induced signal susceptibility (ex. DO-160, Section 18) and radio frequency susceptibility (ex. DO-160, Section 19).

Key features include
