what is a Docking station?

A laptop docking station provides a convenient and fast connection between your laptop and all your peripherals. This is great for use in the office, at a mobile workstation or at home. Connect one or more monitors, mouse, keyboard, printer, network cable,  headset, external HDD or SSD and other USB devices to a docking station. Connect the docking station to your laptop with a single USB cable and you are ready to go. All your peripherals will work as soon as you connect your laptop.

ADDITIONAL MONITOR CONNECTION

CONNECTING AN ADDITIONAL MONITOR TO THE USB-C PORT
Multiport adapters, also known as multiport docks, are a good choice for connecting an additional monitor. Multiport adapters provide additional connections such as a card reader, USB hub and network connection. Multiport adapters are small and portable. Ideal if you travel a lot.
If you work in a fixed location and are happy with one extra monitor in addition to your laptop screen, a laptop stand with a built-in multiport adapter is a good choice. Connect 1 USB-C cable and you are ready to go.
MULTIPLE MONITORS, EACH WITH ITS OWN IMAGE
Connect two or even three extra monitors using a docking station. These extra monitors can each display a different image, so you can leave your email open on one monitor while you start working in Word, or show your desktop on another.

DOCKING STATION CONNECTION
CONNECTING TO THE USB PORT
Multiport adapters and docking stations should preferably be connected to the USB-C port. This allows you to get the most out of your computer.
A docking station with a DisplayLink chipset can also be connected to a standard USB-A port. This allows you to connect up to two displays. It is not possible to charge the laptop via the docking station when the laptop is connected to a USB-A port
CHARGING FROM A USB-C PORT
USB-C docking stations with an external power supply are suitable for charging laptops e.g. AC7148.
USB-C multiport adapters/docks with a pass-through power port charge your laptop by connecting an external USB-C charger.

TECHNOLOGIES BEHIND MULTIPLE DISPLAYS
Most modern laptops are equipped with USB-C ports. In most cases, one or more of these USB-C ports support charging via USB-C and USB-C DP Alt mode.
DP-ALT MODE
Connecting an additional display via a USB-C port uses DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode). This technology works well for connecting one additional monitor to a Mac or Windows laptop.
DP-ALT MODE MULTIPLE MONITORS VIA MST
Connecting two or three monitors via the USB-C port works with MST technology using DP-Alt mode. This MST technology only works on a Windows laptop, not on an Apple laptop.
