Getting to know your wireless router

1.1 Welcome!

Thank you for purchasing an ASUS DSL-AX82U Wireless Router!
The strikingly designed black chassis with gaming-inspired red accents, DSL-AX82U features a 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual bands for an unmatched concurrent wireless HD streaming; SMB server, UPnP AV server, and FTP server for 24/7 file sharing; a capability to handle 300,000 sessions; and the ASUS Green Network Technology, which provides up to 70% power-saving solution.

Your wireless router

1) Power LED
Off: No power.
On: Device is ready.
Flashing slow: Rescue mode.
2) WiFi LED
Off: No WiFi signal.
On: Wireless system is ready.
Flashing: Transmitting or receiving data via wireless connection.
3) LAN (Internet) LED
Off: No power or no physical connection.
On: Has physical connection to a local area network (LAN).
4) DSL / WAN LED
Red: No IP or no physical connection.
On: Has physical connection to a wide area network (WAN).
5) Aura LEDs / WPS / WiFi combo button
Press the button to change the Aura lighting effects.
Press the button about 2 seconds to turn on/off the LED, Aura lighting, WPS and WiFi.
6) Aura LEDs
The Aura LEDs light up when the Aura LEDs button is turned on.
7) Reset button
This button resets or restores the system to its factory default settings.
8) DSL port
Connect to a splitter or to a telephone outlet via an RJ-11 cable.
9) USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports
Insert a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device such as a USB hard disk or a USB flash drive into this port.
Insert your iPad’s USB cable into this port to charge your iPad.
10) LAN 1~4 ports
Connect network cables into these ports to establish LAN connection.
11) WAN (Internet) port
Connect a network cable into this port to establish WAN connection.
12) Power switch
Press this button to power on or off the system.
13) Power (DC-IN) port
Insert the bundled AC adapter into this port and connect your router to a power source.

Positioning your wireless router

For optimal wireless transmission between the wireless router and connected wireless devices, ensure that you:

• Place the wireless router in a centralized area for a maximum wireless coverage for the network devices.
• Keep the wireless router away from metal obstructions and away from direct sunlight.
• Keep the wireless router away from 2.4GHz and 5 GHz interference, such as computer peripherals, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, transformers, heavy-duty motors, fluorescent lights, microwave ovens, refrigerators, and other industrial equipment to prevent signal interference or loss.
• Always update to the latest firmware. Visit the ASUS website at http://www.asus.com to get the latest firmware updates.
• Orient the antennas as shown in the drawing below.

Getting Started

xDSL Router Setup

IMPORTANT!

• Use a wired connection when setting up your wireless router to avoid possible setup problems.
• Before setting up your ASUS wireless router, do the following:
• If you are replacing an existing DSL modem, disconnect it from your network.
• Disconnect the cables/wires from your existing modem, and connect them to the corresponding ports on ASUS wireless modem router.
• Use a RJ11 cable shorter than 10m since extending the length of the cable may decrease the DSL speed.

A. Wired connection

NOTES:

• You can use either a straight-through cable or a crossover cable for wired connection, and either xDSL Modem or Ethernet WAN for Internet access.
• The default username and password for Web GUI are admin and admin.

To set up your wireless router via wired connection:

1. Insert your xDSL modem router’s power adapter to the DCIN port and plug it to a power outlet.
2. Connect one end of the RJ-11 cable to the DSL port of your xDSL modem router, and connect the other end to the DSL port of your splitter.
3. Turn on your xDSL modem router and wait for a few minutes for Internet connection.
4. Connect your computer to the router using a wired Ethernet cable.
5. When DSL/WAN LED stops flashing and lights constantly, you can start the DSL setup process via the QIS Wizard (Quick Internet Setup Wizard).
a. Open a web browser and enter http://router.asus.com to launch the web GUI. Follow onscreen instructions to complete the setup.
b. You can also choose ASUS Router app to set up your router. Download ASUS Router app to set up your router via your mobile devices.
6. Set up a password for your xDSL router to prevent unauthorized access.

B. Wireless connection

To set up your wireless router via wireless connection:

1. Insert your xDSL modem router’s power adapter to the DCIN port and plug it to a power outlet.
2. Connect one end of the RJ-11 cable to the DSL port of your xDSL modem router, and connect the other end to the DSL port of your splitter.
3. Turn on your xDSL modem router and wait for a few minutes for Internet connection.
4. Connect to the wireless network with SSID shown on the product label on the bottom side of the router. You can connect by searching the SSID list or scanning the QR code to for quick connection.
5. When DSL/WAN LED stops flashing and lights constantly, you can start the DSL setup process via the QIS Wizard (Quick Internet Setup Wizard).
a. Open a web browser and enter http://router.asus.com to launch the web GUI. Follow onscreen instructions to complete the setup.
b. You can also choose ASUS Router app to set up your router. Download ASUS Router app to set up your router via your mobile devices.
6. Set up a password for your xDSL router to prevent unauthorized access.

NOTES:

• For details on connecting to a wireless network, refer to the WLAN adapter’s user manual.
• To set up the security settings for your network, refer to 3.1.1 Setting up the wireless security settings of this user manual.

Utilities

NOTE: Download and install the wireless router’s utilities from the ASUS website https://www.asus.com.

5.1 Device Discovery

Device Discovery is an ASUS WLAN utility that detects an ASUS wireless router device, and allows you to configure the wireless networking settings.

To launch the Device Discovery utility:

• From your computer’s desktop, click Start > All Programs > ASUS Utility > Wireless Router > Device Discovery.

NOTE: When you set the router to Access Point mode, you need to use Device Discovery to get the router’s IP address.

5.2 Firmware Restoration

Firmware Restoration is used on an ASUS Wireless Router that failed during its firmware upgrading process. It uploads the firmware that you specify. The process takes about three to four minutes.

IMPORTANT! Launch the rescue mode on the router before using the Firmware Restoration utility.

To launch the rescue mode and use the Firmware Restoration utility:

1. Unplug the wireless router from the power source.
2. Hold the Reset button at the rear panel and simultaneously replug the wireless router into the power source. Release the Reset button when the Power LED at the front panel flashes slowly, which indicates that the wireless router is in the rescue mode.
3. Set a static IP on your computer and use the following to set up your TCP/IP settings:
IP address: 192.168.1.x
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
4. From your computer’s desktop, click
Start > All Programs > ASUS Utility > Wireless Router >
Firmware Restoration.
5. Specify a firmware file, then click Upload.

NOTE: This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router. Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web interface. Refer to Chapter 4: Configuring the Advanced Settings for more details.

Using LPR to Share Printer

You can share your printer with computers running on Windows® and MAC operating system using LPR/LPD (Line Printer Remote/ Line Printer Daemon).
Sharing your LPR printer

To share your LPR printer:

1. From the Windows® desktop, click Start > Devices and Printers> Add a printer to run the Add Printer Wizard.
2. Select Add a local printer and then click Next.
3. Select Create a new port then set Type of Port to Standard TCP/IP Port. Click New Port.
4. In the Hostname or IP address field, key in the IP address of the wireless router then click Next.
5. Select Custom then click Settings.
6. Set Protocol to LPR. In the Queue Name field, key in LPRServer then click OK to continue.
7. Click Next to finish setting up the standard TCP/IP port.
8. Install the printer driver from the vendor-model list. If your printer is not in the list, click Have Disk to manually install the printer drivers from a CD-ROM or file.
9. Click Next to accept the default name for the printer.
10. Click Finish to complete the installation.
