1. Introduction

The Samlex SEC-100BRM-220 is a modular 19-inch rack mount AC/DC power supply designed to deliver up to 100 Amps of continuous power. It features a highly regulated 13.8 Volts DC output from a 210-250 Volts, 50 Hz AC input. This unit incorporates an N+1 redundancy design for enhanced reliability and includes an integrated battery backup module capable of diverting up to 8 amps to charge an external battery. The battery provides DC load power during utility power loss. Key features include a front panel analog Volt/Ampere Meter display, remote monitoring capabilities via a 25-pin D-sub connector, and fan failure warning/alarm indications. This power supply is suitable for critical power applications such as telecommunication systems, mobile sound/audio displays, GPS receivers, security systems, and CCTV systems.

2. Safety Instructions

Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating the Samlex SEC-100BRM-220 power supply. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Electrical Hazard: This unit operates with high voltage. Only qualified personnel should perform installation and servicing.
  • Disconnect Power: Always disconnect the AC input power before making any connections or performing maintenance.
  • Proper Grounding: Ensure the unit is properly grounded to prevent electric shock.
  • Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Adequate airflow is essential to prevent overheating.
  • Environmental Conditions: Do not expose the unit to rain, moisture, or excessive dust. Operate within specified temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Battery Safety: When connecting an external battery, ensure correct polarity. Batteries can produce explosive gases; provide adequate ventilation.
  • Secure Connections: Ensure all electrical connections are tight and secure to prevent arcing and overheating.

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the power supply from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of physical damage that may have occurred during shipping. If damage is found, contact your supplier immediately.

4.2 Mounting

The SEC-100BRM-220 is designed for 19-inch rack mounting. Secure the unit firmly within a standard equipment rack using appropriate mounting hardware (not included). Ensure sufficient clearance around the unit for proper airflow and ventilation, especially at the front and rear where cooling fans are located.

4.3 AC Input Connection

Connect the AC input power cable to the designated AC input terminal block on the rear of the unit. This power supply requires a 210-250 Volts, 50 Hz AC source. Ensure the AC source is capable of supplying the required current for the unit's maximum output. Verify proper grounding of the AC input connection to prevent electrical hazards.

4.4 DC Output Connection

Connect your DC load to the DC output terminals. Observe correct polarity: positive (+) to positive and negative (-) to negative. Use appropriately sized cables to handle the maximum 100 Amps continuous current output. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

4.5 Battery Backup Connection

For battery backup functionality, connect an external 12V battery bank to the dedicated battery connection terminals. Ensure correct polarity. The integrated battery backup module will divert up to 8 amps to charge the connected batteries when the AC input is present and the batteries are in a state of discharge. In the event of AC power loss, the battery will automatically supply power to the DC load.

4.6 Remote Monitoring Connection

If remote monitoring and indication are required, connect a compatible device to the 25-pin D-sub connector on the unit. Refer to the detailed wiring diagram in the full product manual for specific pin assignments and communication protocols.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

After all connections are securely made, switch the power supply's main power switch to the 'ON' position. The unit will initiate its startup sequence. To power off, switch the main power switch to the 'OFF' position.

5.2 Monitoring

The front panel features analog Volt and Ampere meters. The voltmeter displays the DC output voltage, and the ammeter displays the total DC output current being drawn by the load. Monitor these meters to ensure the system is operating within normal parameters.

5.3 Battery Backup Operation

In the event of an AC power failure, the power supply will automatically switch to drawing power from the connected external battery bank to maintain the DC load. When AC power is restored, the unit will resume supplying power to the load and begin recharging the battery bank at up to 8 amps.

5.4 N+1 Redundancy

The N+1 redundancy feature ensures continuous operation even if one power module fails. This design provides an extra layer of reliability for critical applications.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your power supply.

  • Cleaning: Periodically inspect and clean the ventilation openings to prevent dust buildup, which can impede airflow and cause overheating. Use a soft, dry cloth for external cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners.
  • Connection Checks: Annually, or as needed, inspect all AC input, DC output, and battery connections to ensure they remain tight and free from corrosion.
  • Fan Inspection: Listen for unusual noises from the cooling fans. If a fan failure alarm is indicated, inspect the fans for obstructions or malfunction. Replace faulty fans promptly.
  • Battery Maintenance: If an external battery is connected, follow the battery manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance, including checking electrolyte levels (for flooded batteries) and terminal cleanliness.
