About the BMC network port
The BMC has its own network port and IP address. It shares the second left hand network connector (1) with a management network port on a separate IP address.
The BMC network port is disabled by default when the M2 is delivered from the factory.
SECURITY WARNING: Using the BMC network port can expose the M2 to security risks, you must take appropriate steps to avoid these security risks.
If the BMC network port is enabled, the BMC provides an AMI MegaRac SP-X web GUI for control and monitoring the M2 platform.
The BMC accepts IPMI commands from the M2 main processor or, if the BMC network port is enabled, from another device on the network. Ipmitool is typically used to send IPMI commands. Ipmitool is already installed on M2 units when they are shipped from the factory and can be used without enabling the BMC network port.
Enable the BMC network port
To enable the BMC network port and use the BMC, follow these steps:
1. Connect up a keyboard and VGA monitor as the local console (2).
2. Login to the operating system using the following credentials:
- mfeng/2u4y&C account for CE1 and RX1
- or root/med1aK:nd for Aquila
NOTE: With the above credentials, any ipmi commands will require ‘sudo’ for the commands to run with the correct privileges.
3. Use this command to enable the BMC network port:
# ipmitool raw 0x32 0x71 0 0 0
(If you need to disable the BMC network port, use this command: # ipmitool raw 0x32 0x71 0 0 3)
4. You can either set a static IP address, or set the BMC to use a DHCP IP address.
− Use these commands to set a static IP address for the BMC:
# ipmitool lan set 1 ipsrc static
# ipmitool lan set 1 ipaddr <ip address>
# ipmitool lan set 1 netmask <mask>
# ipmitool lan set 1 defgw ipaddr <default gateway IP address>
− Use this command to set DHCP mode for the BMC network port:
# ipmitool lan set 1 ipsrc dhcp
NOTE: It may take around 30 seconds for the mode to change to DHCP and for an address to be assigned by the DHCP server. Use this command to see progress and the DHCP-assigned IP address.
# ipmitool lan print

Use the BMC Web GUI
- Enable the BMC network port
- Connect an RJ45 network cable to the second left hand network socket (1).
- From a web browser that can access the BMC, use the URL https://<ip_address> to access the MegaRac interface.
- Dismiss any security or certificate warnings
- Use the default username admin & password admin to access the GUI.
SECURITY WARNING: Do not expose the BMC outside a secure network with these default credentials. Use the ipmitool user command to set up secure credentials for the BMC.
Change the default admin user password
The admin account password can be changed using ipmitool or through the MegaRac GUI settings/user management page. Mediakind recommends using ipmitool. (The MegaRac GUI dialog defaults to user privileges and disabled access, so using that method risks accidentally changing the admin account access to user privileges, preventing most use of the BMC.)
Use this command to change the admin account password (the admin account has user ID 2):
#ipmitool user set password 2 <new-password> 16
Set up a new user account and change privileges
New users can be added through the BMC Megarac GUI:
- Select Settings from the left-hand menu, then User Management, so that 10 user profiles are shown.
- Select one of the unassigned profiles and then complete the form to create the new username and password.
NOTE: Be sure to check the Enable Access checkbox and select the required access privileges. - Use this command to change the privileges of user account ID 3 to Administrator:
#ipmitool user set priv 3 0x4 1
WARNING: Do not change the privilege of the admin account to anything other than 0x4.
