Preparation

Know Your Shear/Shrubber

This shear/shrubber is designed for trimming and shaping hedges and shrubbery, and for trimming grass and light weeds. Familiarize yourself with all operating features and safety requirements before use.

WARNING: Do not become complacent due to familiarity. A moment of carelessness can cause severe injury. Always familiarize yourself with operating features and safety instructions before using any machine. Do not modify the machine or use unrecommended accessories; this is misuse and can lead to hazardous conditions.

Operating Instructions

Changing the Blade

WARNING: To prevent injury, slide the blade sheath over the blade when replacing it.

The shear/shrubber comes with two blades: a 4" grass shear blade for grass/weeds and an 8" shrubber blade for hedges. Ensure you use the correct blade for your task.

  1. Remove the battery pack from the machine.
  2. Ensure the blade sheath covers the blade being removed and the blade being installed.
  3. Turn the machine upside down.
  4. Press the two blade release buttons (E) simultaneously and pull the installed blade out of the machine housing. Ensure no dirt enters the housing.
  5. Insert the narrow end of the replacement blade into the machine housing. Press the blade housing against the machine housing until it clicks audibly into place.

(Diagram 1a-1d shows the process of changing the blade, including pressing release buttons and inserting the new blade.)

Attaching/Removing Battery Pack

To Attach Battery Pack:

  1. Align the raised portion on the battery pack with the grooves on the bottom of the machine.
  2. Slide the battery pack onto the machine until the latches snap into place and it is secured.

NOTICE: Ensure proper alignment of the battery pack's raised rib with the machine's groove for correct latching. Improper assembly can damage internal components.

To Detach Battery Pack:

  1. Press the battery-release buttons to release the pack.
  2. Pull the battery pack backward to remove it.

(Diagram 2 shows the battery pack being attached/detached using release buttons.)

Starting/Stopping the Machine

To Start:

  1. Grasp the handle (H) firmly.
  2. Push the lock-off button (C) forward.
  3. Squeeze the trigger switch (D). Release the lock-off button (C) once the machine starts.

To Stop:

  1. Move the machine away from the cutting area.
  2. Release the trigger switch.

WARNING: Blades continue to move for a few seconds after the switch is turned off. Wait for blades to stop completely before setting the machine down.

(Diagram 3 illustrates starting the machine with handle H, lock-off button C, and trigger switch D.)

Cutting Tips

  • Never use the shear/shrubber near power lines, fencing, posts, buildings, or other immovable objects.
  • Do not force the shear/shrubber through heavy grass or shrubbery; this can cause blades to bind and slow down. Reduce pace if blades slow.
  • Do not cut stems or twigs thicker than 5/16" (7.9 mm) or those too large to feed into the blade. Use a hand saw or pruning saw for larger stems.
  • If blades jam, stop the motor, wait for blades to stop, and remove the battery pack before clearing the obstruction.
  • For level hedge cutting, use a string guide. Trim the hedge slightly narrower at the top for better exposure and uniformity.
  • Wear gloves when trimming thorny or prickly growth.
  • For new growth, use a wide sweeping action. For older growth, use a sawing movement.

WARNING: Clear the cutting area of objects like cords, lights, wire, or loose string that could entangle the blade and cause serious injury.

Trimming Hedges

  • Trim sides first (bottom upwards), then the top.
  • Trim sides so they are slightly narrower at the top.
  • Use a hand saw or pruning shears for thicker branches.

(Diagram 4 illustrates hedge trimming techniques.)

Trimming Grass and Shrubs

  • For long grass, work in stages from the top, making small cuts.
  • For best results, cut only dry grass.
  • Keep the machine away from solid objects to protect blades from excessive wear.

(Diagram 5 illustrates trimming grass and shrubs.)

Care and Maintenance

WARNING: All maintenance should be performed by a qualified service technician.

  • Before cleaning or maintenance, remove the battery pack.
  • Keep the machine and ventilation slots clean.
  • Use only identical replacement parts for servicing.
  • Wear heavy protective gloves when handling blades.
  • Always wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) and a dust mask if dusty.
  • Do not immerse the machine in water or other liquids when cleaning.
  • Keep plastic parts away from brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum products, and penetrating oils, as chemicals can damage plastic.

NOTICE: Periodically inspect for damaged, missing, or loose parts. Tighten fasteners. Contact customer service if parts are missing or damaged.

Cleaning

After each use, clean debris from blades, ventilation slots, and housing with a soft brush. Wipe the machine surface with a clean cloth moistened with mild soap solution. Clean and lightly lubricate cutting blades after use.

Lubricating the Blades

WARNING: Do not lubricate while the shear/shrubber is running.

Lubricate blades before and after each use for easier operation and longer life. For extended use, lubricate during breaks.

  1. Remove the battery pack.
  2. Lay the shear/shrubber on a flat surface. Apply light-weight machine lubricant (not included) along the edge of the top blade.

(Diagram 6 shows lubricating the blades.)

Transporting and Storing

  1. Remove the battery pack.
  2. Clean the machine.
  3. Always place the sheath on the cutting blades before transporting or storing.
  4. Store indoors in a dry place inaccessible to children.
  5. Keep away from corrosive agents like garden chemicals and de-icing salts.

(Diagram 7 shows the machine with blade sheaths for transport/storage.)
