What the research
supports and leaves open.
- Many Squier patterns reuse Fender prefixes. Confirm the original country wording and serial ink colour before choosing an older format.
- Community supplier charts contain conflicting examples for CAE, CXS, NC, YN, SI and some Japan/U.S. formats. Ambiguous examples are excluded from precise decoding or returned as identification guidance.
- A supplier prefix does not establish a full model, finish, counterfeit status or exact building location. Numeric suffixes are not assumed to encode month or total quantity.
- Coverage of early and newer supplier changes is incomplete; a non-match is not evidence of a counterfeit.
Research reviewed October 16, 2026. This independent tool applies published conventions and ranges; it does not search a manufacturer’s private instrument registry.

Mexico MN decade-prefix serials
Mexico MN decade-prefix serials
The year digit denotes a production season that commonly extends into the following year. The code does not identify model, exact assembly day or quantity.

Original Made in Japan letter chart, 1984–1997
Original Made in Japan letter chart, 1984–1997
Fender calls the dates approximate. Identical letter prefixes recur in later Japanese eras and on other countries’ instruments. The serial alone does not establish a particular Japanese factory.
Japan JV / SQ five-digit serials, 1982–1984
Japan JV / SQ five-digit serials, 1982–1984
These early Japan prefixes identify approximate production ranges, not an exact model or date.
Japan N plus five digits, 1995–1996
Japan N plus five digits, 1995–1996
Five digits after N is a distinct Japanese chart entry, separate from N plus six digits.
Crafted in Japan letter chart, 1997–2008
Crafted in Japan letter chart, 1997–2008
Dates follow Fender’s manufacturer chart. Squier Wiki gives an additional 2006 possibility for CIJ R; examine the model and component dates where the sources differ.
Squier Crafted in Japan B-prefix alternative
Squier Crafted in Japan B-prefix alternative
This additional Squier CIJ entry is documented by the community reference, rather than the Fender manufacturer table.
Squier CIJ R-prefix community-chart 2006 alternative
Squier CIJ R-prefix community-chart 2006 alternative
Squier Wiki extends CIJ R through 2006; Fender’s manufacturer table gives 2004–2005. This is a documented alternative, not a definitive correction to the official chart.
Korean CN/VN official year chart
Korean CN/VN official year chart
The manufacturer chart documents CN/VN0–6 with five following digits and year overlap. It does not establish an exact model. Other CN formats include U.S. Custom Shop instruments and must be identified separately.
Korean KC two-digit year serials, 1997–2012
Korean KC two-digit year serials, 1997–2012
Fender publishes the overlapping production seasons; the 2012 row gives 2012 only. Remaining digits are not a model code or a production quantity.
Korean unprefixed serials (broad 1988–1996 period)
Korean unprefixed serials (broad 1988–1996 period)
Fender lists unprefixed six-, seven- and eight-digit serials in a broad 1988–1996 range. It does not provide a reliable first-digit year algorithm for this entire group.
Korean silver E-series decals
Korean silver E-series decals
The first digit is not a simple decade formula: E1 can mean 1987 on Korean silver decals. Ink colour and country wording are necessary context.
Korean black E9 decals
Korean black E9 decals
The community guide distinguishes black Sung Eum E9 from silver Young Chang E9. Country or factory is not inferred if the decal context is missing.
Korean black Samick S serials
Korean black Samick S serials
The S9 interval spans 1989–1991 and S1 spans 1991–1992 in the community reference; a single-year answer would overstate the evidence.
Squier Korean late VN7–9 decals
Squier Korean late VN7–9 decals
Squier Wiki documents these later VN year digits beyond Fender’s 0–6 chart. The year is nominal, and decal/assembly carryover is possible.
Squier Korean KV97 supplier year code
Squier Korean KV97 supplier year code
The community reference explicitly illustrates KV97 as 1997 at Saehan/Sunghan. Other KV years need additional era evidence; the unrelated KC chart is not used to invent a KV production span.
Squier Korean M early-1990s serials
Squier Korean M early-1990s serials
The community guide documents an early 1990s M format and the M1→1991 example. This deliberately bounded implementation does not extend M to every decade.
Squier CY two-digit Yako serials
Squier CY two-digit Yako serials
The supported two-digit CY variant reads the year after CY. Squier Wiki also mentions a one-digit variant and contains a conflicting CY02 example; neither is used to invent a different year or month.
Squier China COS supplier serials
Squier China COS supplier serials
The community reference documents this supplier prefix and year span. A serial year is an approximate dating aid and does not identify a full model.
Squier China COB supplier serials
Squier China COB supplier serials
Two-digit supplier year format documented by the community reference. COB’s factory is described there as probable, so no confirmed factory is returned.
Squier China CGR supplier serials
Squier China CGR supplier serials
The community reference documents this supplier prefix and year span. A serial year is an approximate dating aid and does not identify a full model.
Squier China CGS supplier serials
Squier China CGS supplier serials
The community reference documents this supplier prefix and year span. A serial year is an approximate dating aid and does not identify a full model.
Squier China CD supplier serials
Squier China CD supplier serials
The community reference documents this supplier prefix and year span. A serial year is an approximate dating aid and does not identify a full model.
Squier CGR letter-month serials, 2020 onward
Squier CGR letter-month serials, 2020 onward
The final letter of the prefix maps A–L to January–December. The following two digits give the year. This is the community supplier chart, with no exact building location or model encoded.
Squier CSS letter-month serials, 2020 onward
Squier CSS letter-month serials, 2020 onward
The final letter of the prefix maps A–L to January–December. The following two digits give the year. This is the community supplier chart, with no exact building location or model encoded.
Squier CYK letter-month serials, 2020 onward
Squier CYK letter-month serials, 2020 onward
The final letter of the prefix maps A–L to January–December. The following two digits give the year. This is the community supplier chart, with no exact building location or model encoded.
Squier NC Strat Bullet association (date unclear)
Squier NC Strat Bullet association (date unclear)
Fender explicitly leaves NC dating unclear. Conflicting community year examples are not converted into definitive dates or an exact model.
Squier YN identification (year uncertain)
Squier YN identification (year uncertain)
The source labels this family 1996–1997 but gives YN5 as 1995. Those conflicting statements are preserved as an unresolved dating limit.
Squier Indonesia IC serials
Squier Indonesia IC serials
The first two digits are the nominal year in the community supplier chart. Remaining digits do not establish model, month or a verified production quantity; ICS does not prove a particular FSR specification.
Squier Indonesia ICS serials
Squier Indonesia ICS serials
The first two digits are the nominal year in the community supplier chart. Remaining digits do not establish model, month or a verified production quantity; ICS does not prove a particular FSR specification.
Squier Indonesia IS serials
Squier Indonesia IS serials
The first two digits are the nominal year in the community supplier chart. Remaining digits do not establish model, month or a verified production quantity; ICS does not prove a particular FSR specification.
Squier Indonesia ISS serials
Squier Indonesia ISS serials
The first two digits are the nominal year in the community supplier chart. Remaining digits do not establish model, month or a verified production quantity; ICS does not prove a particular FSR specification.
Squier Indonesia SI serials
Squier Indonesia SI serials
The community supplier chart reads the first two digits as the year. Supported codes do not prove supplier activity in every year. No month is inferred from the numeric suffix. SI08 is excluded because its source example conflicts with the stated 2002–2004 span.
Squier ICS/ISS letter-month serials, 2021 onward
Squier ICS/ISS letter-month serials, 2021 onward
The fourth prefix letter maps A–L to month, followed by a two-digit year. Supplier identity is a community attribution; the map shows Indonesia, not an unverified factory pin.
India Vintage Modified SH/ZSSH/CS serials
India Vintage Modified SH/ZSSH/CS serials
Squier Wiki lists overlapping 2007–2008/2008–2009 dates for these India prefixes. CS is accepted here only for the listed 07/08 form, not as a general Fender Custom Shop format.
India NSH supplier-code serials, 2009–2010
India NSH supplier-code serials, 2009–2010
Only literal documented prefix variants are accepted. Their extra letters are not assumed to be month codes; the source gives 2009–2010 dates.
India NSHJ08 serials
India NSHJ08 serials
Literal documented India serial entry; the supplier letter is not promoted into a month without evidence.
India NHS10/NHS11 serials
India NHS10/NHS11 serials
The source specifies different suffix lengths for these two late India entries. Dates remain overlapping production ranges.
India Squier II N0 country-label context
India Squier II N0 country-label context
The country label is essential; N0 alone cannot distinguish India from U.S. production.
U.S. Squier N0 country-label context
U.S. Squier N0 country-label context
The supported U.S. example is N0→1990. The community E9→1988 example conflicts with its own decade explanation and is excluded.
U.S. Squier 000 neck-plate identification (no encoded year)
U.S. Squier 000 neck-plate identification (no encoded year)
The documented six-digit U.S. neck-plate example is an identification aid, not a reliable date code.

Squier serial questions
Can the serial identify my exact model?
Most formats provide a period, sequence or production clue. Where a published system encodes a model or model family, the result identifies that association and links to a manual search. You can also enter the separately marked model name.
Why do several years fit?
Some manufacturers reused ranges or year digits. A date range or several candidates are retained when the sources cannot narrow them. A year supplied from your records is labelled as user context.
Does the map locate the exact factory?
The map shows the supported country or geographic area at the precision stated. It does not establish that a historical instrument passed through a particular building.
Can I share this lookup?
After a lookup, use “Copy share link.” The address contains #serial= and any supplied context. Opening it runs the same lookup; POST results are not shared cached query-string pages.
Does an unmatched number mean a counterfeit?
No. Published serial guides have gaps, and replacement components or unusual runs can carry different markings. Authenticity and originality require more evidence than a serial format.
