Decode supported Ruud water-heater and HVAC serial formats separately. A shared-looking plant letter can mean different places for different product families.

Ruud serial numbers by device type
Match the product, manufacturer and documented serial layout before interpreting a date. The model is a separate label field; a date code alone does not identify capacity, installation date or warranty entitlement.
Ruud water heaters
For Ruud water-heater labels: for a confirmed matching Rheem-built water heater, older serials can encode month/year before a plant-line letter. Documented later systems use plant, week and year. Plant changes occurred individually. These are water-heater rules; an HVAC serial or a newer product from another builder needs its own documentation.
Supported HVAC systems include production-week/year codes and specific furnace-family interpretations. Match the model and source era. Plant-code meanings for HVAC and water heaters can differ, so a water-heater map must not be applied to an air conditioner or furnace.
Water heaters: month and year before plant-line code
water-heater
Old water-heater suffix MMYY plant-line + five sequence digits. Manufacturer example 1209D01234 = December2009. Optional brand prefix is not part of the10-character date format. Modern plants changed individually from2012; do not assume old-style serial ceased at every plant that year.
Water heaters: plant, production week and year
water-heater
TSB1207 starts Mexicali April2,2012 and Nuevo Laredo June4,2012; plants migrate individually. PWWYY00001 plus optional conversion-letter suffix. Plant identifies a city/country/organization only, never an exact street. Brand/fuel prefix can precede P.
HVAC: plant, production week and year
hvac
Rheem HVAC parts-list nomenclature gives plant + WWYY + production sequence. Current manufacturer article confirms the first four digits after the date-bearing letter are week-year. Plant mapping is product/era dependent; M means Milledgeville for this HVAC legend, not water-heater Mexicali.
GTA furnaces: component prefix and production date
hvac
Rheem [-]GTA manufacturer parts legend: seven control/blower/element/motor characters, plant F, WWYY, five production digits. Identifies components in that exact family; it cannot recover full consumer model. Requires matching GTA furnace model.
Historical Rheem-family supplied-chart numeric MMYY system
Only the supplied 2010 Rheem-family water-heater chart; not generic GE/Intertherm HVAC or other products.
Secondary evidence illustrates 0794******as July 1994. Existing manufacturer-corroborated MMYY/letter/sequence water-heater rules remain unchanged. Current Rheem official pages support MMYY meanings on a different 10-character example 1209 D 01234; that does not independently prove every numeric-only historic suffix.
Select only after confirming the water heater or boiler family and numbering system described here. Brand ownership alone does not establish this system.

Ruud lookup questions
Why does the year code match more than one year?
Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.
Does the serial identify my exact model?
Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.
Can I share the result?
After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
