Check a documented system

What’s on the rating plate?

Kenmore / Sears household appliances with full model maker-prefix context; water heaters only after separate manufacturer-family confirmation.

Spaces and dashes are accepted. Check O/0 and I/1, and keep any leading zeros.

Checks ENERGY STAR model records and searches manuals separately from the serial. Certification records do not establish this unit’s manufacture date.

Confirm your equipment and numbering system

For a historical or shared water-heater label, choose the documented system only after confirming the tank manufacturer and model family. Choose a system only when it matches the product family and its documentation. A purchase year or a manual’s publication date does not establish a manufacturing date.

Kenmore serial numbers by device type

Match the product, manufacturer and documented serial layout before interpreting a date. The model is a separate label field; a date code alone does not identify capacity, installation date or warranty entitlement.

Kenmore water heaters

For Kenmore water-heater labels: a confirmed State-family tank can use year/week or documented older letter-month/year systems. Historical month alphabets differ: one table includes I and a later table skips it. In the chart’s year/week layout, 0904 means year 2009, week 04; it does not mean April. Use the labelled build date to resolve context.

State Water Heaters official support ↗

Kenmore / Sears household appliances

Kenmore major-appliance decoding uses the model-number supplier prefix to choose a supported builder. The water-heater option is separate and must not bypass appliance manufacturer identification. A Kenmore serial alone does not recover the full appliance model.

Scope matters

Supported formats
and historical limits.

  • A Kenmore serial alone cannot reliably reveal the manufacturer or full model.
  • Recognized maker prefixes are historical supplier identifiers; context may still be required for older and contract-built exceptions.
  • Other prefixes, including Amana, Roper, Samsung and LG builders, should route only when their corresponding verified rule is available.
  • Appliance maker prefixes do not select the water-heater system. Confirm the water-heater rating plate and State-family documentation separately.
  • Enter the separate model number from the rating plate to search for the correct manual. These date positions do not establish a full model, capacity, fuel type or warranty entitlement.
  • The historical inspection chart is secondary evidence of listed brand relationships, not proof of the manufacturer, product family or date system on a particular unit. Confirm the actual label and select the matching system explicitly.
  • A missing match does not establish age, authenticity or condition. Unsupported eras and device types require the manufacturer or model-specific documentation.

Kenmore confirmed Whirlpool-built year/week

Kenmore/Sears appliances only when model begins with one of the documented maker prefixes 106, 110, 198, 664, 665.

The maker prefix comes from the model number, not the serial. The serial does not reveal the complete model. Week 01–53; no conversion to an exact manufacture day. Numeric year codes have historic 1970s/1980s alternatives for pre-acquisition Whirlpool systems. 2023–2026 letters are verified by AppliancePartsPros’ named technician; 2019–2022 directly corroborated by manufacturer manual. Source-prefix interpretation is not a model decoder. Water heaters, HVAC and commercial MXR washers excluded.

Kenmore confirmed GE-built month/year

Kenmore/Sears appliances only when model begins with one of the documented maker prefixes 362, 363.

The maker prefix comes from the model number, not the serial. The serial does not reveal the complete model. Year codes repeat. All documented candidate years are shown; the newest year is not selected automatically. GE chart inconsistently lists 1972 under both N and R, 1973 under both P and S; both entries are retained as printed in the source chart. No factory/model inference from first two letters.

Kenmore model-prefix-confirmed North American Electrolux/Frigidaire YWW

Kenmore appliances only when model starts 253, 417, 790. North American Frigidaire/Electrolux and matching documented WCI-family major appliances using the 10-character format.

The manufacturer route is identified from the MODEL prefix, never the serial. The decade is not encoded. Product letter codes may vary by era and family; they are appliance-type clues, not model identity. Excludes Frigidaire HVAC, General Motors-era Frigidaire and non-North-American systems. Factory code is shown without an invented location.

Kenmore model-prefix-confirmed LG appliance first-three-digit date

Kenmore appliances only when model starts 795, 796. LG major home appliances using the YMM-leading alphanumeric serial, including compatible historic LG/GoldStar-era layouts when verified by the appliance label.

The manufacturer route is identified from the MODEL prefix, never the serial. A one-digit year cannot establish a decade. This is not an exact model, country or capacity decoder; arbitrary remaining letters are not mapped to factories without product-specific documentation.

Kenmore model-prefix-confirmed Samsung documented year/month before five-digit sequence

Kenmore appliances only when model starts 401, 402. Samsung appliance/electronics serials that follow the manufacturer warranty-document tail format: year, month, five-unit digits and optional final control letter.

The manufacturer route is identified from the MODEL prefix, never the serial. Earlier and current warranty charts reuse some year codes; both interpretations are retained. The same letter can mean 2005 or 2025. Do not assume every Samsung product has a fixed eighth-position date. Neither model nor exact factory is derived.

Confirmed water-heater family: Water heaters: year and production week

Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.

YYWW: first two digits year; next two production week. The 2024 manufacturer guide permits week 53. No model, capacity, fuel or installation date is encoded by these four digits. 2008 is a conservative supported-range limit, not an asserted universal changeover. The October 2016 SAP change uses a 13-character printed date-plus-serial. A bare nine-digit barcode/SAP serial has NO date code and is deliberately not decoded. The supplied historical inspection chart lists additional names, but that relationship does not prove the manufacturer of every product bearing the same brand. This option requires independent confirmation from the unit label or model-specific documentation.

Confirm that this is a water heater and that its rating plate or model-specific manufacturer documentation uses this exact numbering family. A historical brand list or a matching serial shape alone is insufficient.

Confirmed water-heater family: Water heaters: letter month and year, 2004-2007

Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.

Manufacturer/CPSC notices document the A-L/M month series with I omitted: L 07 is November 2007; M 07 December 2007. This rule is intentionally limited to the observed 2004-2007 family.

Confirmed water-heater family: Water heaters: plant and month letters, early 2004

Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.

The January-June 2004 recall serial-prefix table includes a leading plant character before the month. Do not strip an arbitrary leading letter from every later serial.

Confirmed water-heater family: State historical month letters, 1991-2002

Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.

Archived State manufacturer FAQ lists 1991-2002 and A-L with I included, I=September. This differs from later skip-I formats; do not combine the month tables.

Kenmore lookup questions

Why does the year code match more than one year?

Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.

Does the serial identify my exact model?

Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.

Can I share the result?

After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
