Historical and current systems

What’s marked on your instrument?

USA and Custom Shop bolt-on and neck-through instruments, Jackson Junior and documented 2013-onward JS/X/Pro import formats.

Spaces and dashes are accepted. Copy the number itself, keeping O/0 and I/1 distinct.

Known instrument context (optional)

Use the actual markings or reliable records. A purchase date does not establish a manufacture year.

Selecting a system supplies context; it does not verify that your instrument belongs to that production run.

What the research
supports and leaves open.

  • For a bare four- or six-digit number, confirm the USA construction/series before using a range. Many earlier import serials are not publicly dateable from a number alone.
  • The USA range tables are finite through 2000, with open-ended entries headed 2001. Those entries do not establish that every higher number was built in 2001, so this tool does not extrapolate them.
  • Custom Shop bolt-on serials 1506–7303 cover 1987–1989 together; Jackson says these plates were not assembled in strict order. The unissued 5234–5999 block is excluded.
  • The official neck-through chart uses UO in its table and U0 in explanatory text. This tool accepts either letter O or digit zero in that position and makes no authenticity conclusion.
  • The modern date rule applies to the manufacturer’s ten-character alphanumeric JS/X/Pro system from 2013 onward. It does not force other import serial lengths into that system.
  • Prefix letters and a production year do not, by themselves, prove the exact model or supplier factory of a modern import. Detailed pre-2002 import information may be unavailable.
  • RR and J codes normally describe construction/model groups, with documented prototype and mis-stamping exceptions; exact models should be checked against features and catalogs.

Research reviewed October 16, 2026. This independent tool applies published conventions and ranges; it does not search a manufacturer’s private instrument registry.

Custom Shop bolt-on neck-plate ranges

USA Custom Shop bolt-on neck-plate ranges.

The 1987–1989 block cannot be separated by sequence. Jackson says 5234–5999 were never issued, and this gap is not matched.

USA production bolt-on neck-plate ranges

USA production bolt-on neck-plate ranges.

Exactly six digits must be retained, including leading zeroes; import six-digit shapes are not covered.

Jackson Junior fingerboard ranges

USA Jackson Junior fingerboard ranges.

Jackson Junior serials are on the fingerboard; the finite source table ends at 0643JJ in 2000.

Randy Rhoads neck-through ranges

USA Randy Rhoads neck-through ranges.

RR normally denotes the Rhoads neck-through group. The manufacturer notes prototypes and occasional mis-stamped non-RR codes; exact model specifications are not established.

J-prefix other Custom neck-through ranges

USA J-prefix other Custom neck-through ranges.

The J sequence spans several models and cannot distinguish Soloist, King V, Kelly or Concert Bass. The source overlaps J6506 in 1999 and 2000; both candidates are retained.

Jackson Archtop neck-through ranges

USA Jackson Archtop neck-through ranges.

JA0181 is not covered by a dated row. The chart says end of series for 1995 and none produced 1996–1998, then lists 1999/2000 examples; missing numbers are not interpolated.

USA U0 / UO neck-through ranges

USA U0 / UO neck-through ranges.

The official table prints UO while its notes print U0; either is accepted. These production serials are shared by multiple USA neck-through models.

Modern JS / X / Pro: first two numeric year digits

Confirmed ten-character JS, X or Pro Series serial from 2013 onward, on the headstock or neck plate.

The manufacturer’s demonstrated ICJ1500001 form yields 2015. Prefix letters are preserved in the serial; this rule does not infer a supplier factory, country or exact model from them.

Jackson serial questions

Can the serial identify my exact model?

Most formats provide a period, sequence or production clue. Where a published system encodes a model or model family, the result identifies that association and links to a manual search. You can also enter the separately marked model name.

Why do several years fit?

Some manufacturers reused ranges or year digits. A date range or several candidates are retained when the sources cannot narrow them. A year supplied from your records is labelled as user context.

Does the map locate the exact factory?

The map shows the supported country or geographic area at the precision stated. It does not establish that a historical instrument passed through a particular building.

Can I share this lookup?

After a lookup, use “Copy share link.” The address contains #serial= and any supplied context. Opening it runs the same lookup; POST results are not shared cached query-string pages.

Does an unmatched number mean a counterfeit?

No. Published serial guides have gaps, and replacement components or unusual runs can carry different markings. Authenticity and originality require more evidence than a serial format.
