Historical and current systems

What’s marked on your instrument?

Gretsch guitars and basses. Gretsch drums use separate badge/date systems and are not covered.

Spaces and dashes are accepted. Copy the number itself, keeping O/0 and I/1 distinct.

Known instrument context (optional)

Use the actual markings or reliable records. A purchase date does not establish a manufacture year.

Selecting a system supplies context; it does not verify that your instrument belongs to that production run.

What the research
supports and leaves open.

  • Original-era manufacturer range tables differ. Dates are approximate model-year guides and the 1957-label group can recur in 1965/1966.
  • Headstock date codes and late orange/grey sequential labels can contain identical digits. Confirm label/stamp type before decoding a vintage numeric serial.
  • Modern serials encode country/factory and year/month, but not the exact model; revival-era G6000 fields identify only the base model.
  • Some 1999–2002 Korean models and the low-production 1980s transition have no sufficiently documented serial algorithm here.

Gretsch original sequential ranges, circa 1939–1966

Gretsch original sequential ranges, circa 1939–1966

Both manufacturer tables are retained because they differ at several boundaries, especially before 1953. Dates are approximate model-year guides. The misplaced 1957-label group can also belong to 1965/1966 instruments; an individual number is not proof of the year.

Gretsch early date code (1-digit month)

Gretsch early date code (1-digit month)

Month and year are a possible reading, not a unique date: a string beginning 10,11 or 12 can also be January 1970,1971 or 1972. Some source examples contain a month-name typo (10 described as November); numeric 10 is October. Compare stamp location, Made in USA marking and model features.

Gretsch later Baldwin date code (1-digit month)

Gretsch later Baldwin date code (1-digit month)

The original month separator helps choose a reading. Source examples include variable sequence lengths. A1969–1981 orange/grey That Great Gretsch Sound label beginning 1/2 instead uses a non-date-coded sequence and must not be decoded with this rule.

Gretsch late orange/grey label (no encoded year)

Gretsch explicitly states these five-digit 1/2-prefixed labels are sequential and are not the Baldwin month/year format. No exact year or month is returned.

Gretsch Japanese revival date/model (1-digit month), 1989–2002

Gretsch Japanese revival date/model (1-digit month), 1989–2002

This revival-era interpretation is attributed to Peter Schu’s specialist guide on Reverb. The model field can support a manuals search. With a dashless serial, variable month/sequence lengths can permit more than one reading; the original dash position and model label resolve it. Some 1999–2002 Korean budget instruments have no reliable documented serial system.

The first four numeric digits give YY/MM. Last four are a yearly sequence across all models at the indicated factory, not a model code.0001–0100 are reserved for special instruments. IS/Samick Indonesia is documented in the specialist guide; the seven other prefixes are explicitly documented by Gretsch.

Gretsch serial questions

Can the serial identify my exact model?

Most formats provide a period, sequence or production clue. Where a published system encodes a model or model family, the result identifies that association and links to a manual search. You can also enter the separately marked model name.

Why do several years fit?

Some manufacturers reused ranges or year digits. A date range or several candidates are retained when the sources cannot narrow them. A year supplied from your records is labelled as user context.

Does the map locate the exact factory?

The map shows the supported country or geographic area at the precision stated. It does not establish that a historical instrument passed through a particular building.

Can I share this lookup?

After a lookup, use “Copy share link.” The address contains #serial= and any supplied context. Opening it runs the same lookup; POST results are not shared cached query-string pages.

Does an unmatched number mean a counterfeit?

No. Published serial guides have gaps, and replacement components or unusual runs can carry different markings. Authenticity and originality require more evidence than a serial format.
