What’s on the rating plate?
HVAC or water-heater; user must choose.
Scope matters

and historical limits.
- Manufacture date is distinct from installation, purchase and warranty start dates.
- The date code does not identify a full model, capacity or configuration. Enter the separate model from the rating plate for manual search.
- HVAC code applies central heating/cooling, not all accessories/coils. Water-heater guide contains additional Ariston-era formats not automatically attributed to old American Standard products.
Research reviewed October 16, 2026. This independent tool applies published rules and retains unresolved years and model candidates.

Central HVAC: letter year, 1980-2001
hvac
Legacy nine-character serial. First character uses the published non-alphabetical year map; next two are fiscal week. Day-of-week code is not an exact calendar date. Some coils/accessories use separate three-character date codes and are excluded.
Central HVAC: one-digit year, 2002-2009
hvac
Nine-character continuation with one-digit year 2-9. The leading zero of 2002-2009 is blank in the ten-position scheme. Preserve the fiscal-week wording.
Central HVAC: two-digit year and fiscal week
hvac
Ten characters: YY fiscal-week, day-of-week, time stamp, assembly line, plant code. Trane 2026 handbook explicitly lists 2009 as 9 or 09. Plant map is approximate city scope; unknown Y is not assigned a place.
Water heaters: month letter and year
water-heater
American Standard Water Heaters publishes an Ariston-group guide. Its J21-6869 example means September 2021; suffix has no further useful device information. Apply only the matching tank-type family, not American Standard HVAC. Guide does not establish an historical start; pre-2000 codes remain unresolved.
Hybrid water heaters: 21-character material and date code
water-heater
21-character hybrid code: seven-character Ariston material code (model-specific but no verified crosswalk), two factory characters (no location crosswalk), YY, calendar day-of-year, seven daily sequence digits. The material code is not a verified consumer model number.

American Standard lookup questions
Why does the year code match more than one year?
Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.
Does the serial identify my exact model?
Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.
Can I share the result?
After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
