- Wait at least 3 seconds after the beep to take the next temperature reading
HELPFUL HINTS
• Oils or cosmetics on the forehead may give a lower temperature reading. Remove dirt from the forehead before taking measurements. Wait at least 10 minutes after washing the forehead before taking a reading.
• Do not take temperature over scar tissue, open sores, or abrasions.
• Do not take the temperature on a perspiring or sweating forehead.
• Do not use a thermometer outdoors.
• The probe window must be kept clean, dry, and undamaged at all times to ensure accurate readings.
• To clean the probe window, using a clean cotton swab dipped in 70% alcohol, wipe the probe window 3 times. Wait 10 minutes before taking temperatures.
• The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. If used properly, readjustments are not necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most thermometers we tested covered a range from roughly 96 °F to 109 °F with an accuracy of ±0.4 degrees. Ear and forehead infrared thermometers, both in-ear/on-forehead and contactless, are accurate enough to properly track a fever and are generally easier to use than stick thermometers.
The Braun Digital No-Touch Forehead Thermometer was by far the best we tested. This thermometer guides you through the entire temperature-taking process with directions conveniently printed right on the front of the thermometer.
A temporal thermometer will read at about 0.5 to 1 degree lower than an oral thermometer, so you need to add 0.5 to 1 degree to get what your temperature would read orally. For example, if your forehead temperature read as 98.5°F, you could actually have a low-grade fever of 99.5°F or higher.
our study shows that commercially available, handheld infrared thermometers require individual validation. Forehead temperature in excess of 35.6°C (96.1°F) is suggestive of fever.
Advertising revenue supports our not-for-profit mission. The following thermometer readings generally indicate a fever: Rectal, ear, or temporal artery temperature of 100.4 (38 C) or higher.
Normal body temperature ranges from 97.5°F to 99.5°F (36.4°C to 37.4°C). It tends to be lower in the morning and higher in the evening. Most healthcare providers consider a fever to be 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. A person with a temperature of 99.6°F to 100.3°F has a low-grade fever.
The Hospital Grade No Contact Thermometer – Hammacher Schlemmer. This is the infrared thermometer used by hospitals for its convenient and hygienic operation that provides an accurate temperature reading in only one second without touching the patient.
TRITEMP™ thermometers are an essential piece of equipment in hospitals but they can be used in a wider range of medical settings, including dentists, care homes, and doctor surgeries.
Forehead thermometer. These are perceived as the least disruptive and therefore the most comfortable way to measure body temperature. The forehead thermometer is placed on the forehead of the patient. An infrared sensor detects the highest measured value, while a second sensor measures the ambient temperature.
