FEATURED KEYNOTE

  • How to Run Your Security Program Using AI Before Someone Else Does
  • Thursday, September 5  6:30–7:30 PM
  • LOCATION: Roman I (PROMENADE) SPEAKER: Daniel Miessler, Founder of Unsupervised Learning & Creator of Fabric AI
  • In this talk, Daniel Miessler (ex. Apple, Robinhood, IOActive, HP) talks through the most common time-sinks with running a security program, like constantly being in pitch mode, constantly needing to create the next report, the next presentation, etc.. It then shows how you can onboard your entire program, from your mission to your goals to your metrics to your projects—right into a LOCAL AI SYSTEM. From there he shows how you can continuously manage all of your metrics updates, communications, and other time-intensive activities from that single system. Most importantly, the talk details how this is not theoretical or in the distant future. Large consultancies are preparing to come to our CEOs and CIOs right now with a similar system, and we need to be ready.

ALUMNIGHT SANS@NIGHT TALK

  • Aye Yai Yai! Managing the Complexity of Industrial Artificial Intelligence (IAI)
  • Friday, September 6 | 6:45–7:45 PM | LOCATION: Roman I (PROMENADE) SPEAKER: Jason Christopher, SANS Certified Instructor
  • The past few years have seen an explosion in the discussions around artificial intelligence thanks to the likes of ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other consumer-based AI products. All of this buzz was bound to reach the C-Suite, and sure enough it has—but how can we address the promises (and  risks) associated with AI in our industrial environments? In this presentation, we will unpack the loaded term “artificial intelligence” and examine the  use cases present within industrial operations. Several vendors have jumped on the chance to incorporate AI, but is it all fluff? Or is SkyNet alive and walking amongst us? Something in between? Industrial Artificial Intelligence (IAI) is already being positioned in front of eager executives that want to maximize productivity and margins—learn more during this presentation and bring actionable insights back to your organization to  drive decision-making for what works (and what doesn’t) in this new field.
  • NOTE: Capacity is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

SPECIAL EVENT

  • SANS Inaugural Villages – A Three-Part Experience: Intro to CTFs | Web Workshops | Speed Run CTF
  • Friday, September 6 & Saturday, September 7 | 6:45–9:45 PM LOCATION: Pompeian II (PROMENADE)
  • Join in this exciting opportunity to hone your skills via a NEW village setting with your peers. We’ve planned an exciting multifaceted event to take place over not one, but TWO nights at Network Security 2024. Take part in any one or all parts of our SANS Villages!
  • NOTE: These (3) Village experiences occur concurrently. Feel free to curate your own experience by freely roaming from one to the other!

VILLAGE 1: Introduction to CTF (Capture the Flag)
Capture-the-Flag (CTF) competitions range in style and difficulty but every CTF offers a wealth of knowledge. After an initial baselining on CTF basics, the focus of this workshop relates to how both technical and non-technical skills
learned through participation can be applied to real-world scenarios. This workshop excites the value of CTFs and what they stand to gain by playing! Turn these fun puzzles into real-world skills to apply in your career.

Workshop Outline:

  • CTF Styles
  • Types of Challenges
  • Technical Skills, Tools, and Techniques
  • Non-Technical Skills
  • Socializing and Teamwork
  • Post-CTF
  • Resources
  • Conclusion

VILLAGE 2: Web Workshops
ThreatShop is an interactive workshop designed to be a hands-on, practical experience to learn about web application security. Attendees will learn the top web vulnerabilities through a guided hands-on approach. Each exercise contains information on the vulnerability and an example of vulnerable code. After attempting the exercise, you’ll have a walkthrough allowing you to complete the task on your own. Apply what you’ve learned in the Speed Run CTF!

Topic Areas

  • Module – Introduction to Web Fundamentals
  • Module – Understanding Web Communications
  • Module – Practical Web Tools for Security Testing
  • Exercise – Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR)
  • Exercise – Path Traversal
  • Exercise – SQL Injection
  • Exercise – Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF)
  • Exercise – Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)
  • Exercise – Insecure Deserialization

VILLAGE 3: Speed Run CTF Think you’re fast? Prove it.

This adrenaline-pumping Capture the Flag (CTF) event is unlike any other. Anyone can solve a CTF challenge with enough time. This tournament is about proving you can think fast and act decisively. This isn’t your average CTF… it’s a race against the clock.

Two Minutes Per Challenge—Can you handle the pressure?
Variety of Challenges—Test your skills in a wide range of CTF categories from cryptography to web exploitation.
Three Hours of Intensity—Solve as many challenges as you can in the three-hour tournament window—every second counts!

WORKSHOP
Offensive AI for Social Engineering and

Deep Fake Development
Saturday, September 7 | 6:45–9:45 PM | LOCATION: Roman III (PROMENADE) SPEAKER: Foster Nethercott, United States Marine Corps Veteran | MSISE | GIAC x 10 In recent years, the popularization of Artificial Intelligence has not only advanced technological capabilities but has also sparked a wave of curiosity among hackers, who are exploring the question, “How can I break this?” From the early jailbreaks of security controls to malware development to polymorphic code  capable of defense evasion, the abuse of AI is rampant. While these abuses are valuable tools for penetration testers, they neglect a crucial vulnerability in any organization—the end user. This workshop is designed for cybersecurity professionals aiming to illuminate how bad actors are using AI to manipulate, deceive, and exploit individuals ultimately resulting in a breach of defenses.
The purpose of these hands-on exercises is to demonstrate the abilities of these technologies and their threats of misuse, leaving you with the necessary skills to use and counter AI-based cyber threats.

SPECIAL EVENT

  • Birds of a Feather: Open Mic Night
  • Saturday, September 7 | 7:00–9:00 PM
  • LOCATION: Pompeian I (PROMENADE)  Join us for a bit of fun and music! Let’s gather in the evening for some instrument playing and karaoke-style singalongs! • Sunday, September 8 | 7:00–8:00 PM
  • LOCATION: Roman I (PROMENADE)
  • SPEAKER: David Hoelzer, SANS Fellow
  • Every security standard requires code reviews. How well is your organization doing? Are all code changes peer-reviewed for security issues? How thorough are those reviews?

Are some of them “token” reviews?

  • David Hoelzer will discuss a brand new open-source project that hooks into your CI/CD pipeline. This tool reviews all changes in your code base and flags changes that are likely to be security impacting, allowing automatic escalation of security critical code changes. Come and learn how this works and how to get started!
