When to add: During the rinse cycle only
Why: Adding it too early (during the wash) neutralizes its sanitizing properties.
✅ Manual Method (Most Reliable)
Start your wash cycle as usual (detergent + clothes).
Wait until the machine finishes its wash and starts to fill for rinse.
Pause the cycle (if possible), or wait until the rinse water starts agitating.
Add 2 capfuls (or per bottle instructions) of Lysol Laundry Sanitizer directly into the water.
Close the lid and resume the cycle.
⚠️ Do not add it:
At the start of the wash
Into the bleach dispenser (it can damage seals and mix at the wrong time)
With detergent
When to add: During the final rinse cycle
Why: It’s designed to remove residual odors and detergent—not soften.
✅ Manual Addition
Same process as Lysol above.
Wait until rinse starts, add directly to the drum water (not on clothes).
Use about 1/2 cap to 1 cap, depending on load size.
⚠️ Downy Ball is not suitable:
It releases too early (during wash), wasting the product.
Some third-party products exist that are timed to open during rinse.
Look for options designed for bleach or sanitizer—not fabric softener.
Some washer owners add aftermarket rinse cycle dispensers (mechanical or time-based).
Not cheap, but can automate the process.
Use a smart plug with a timer to notify you when the rinse cycle starts.
Many Whirlpool top-load cycles follow predictable timing (e.g., rinse begins ~25 min in on normal cycle).
