Soil Preparation
Great gardens start with great soil. Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening.
Flower bulbs prefer loose, well-drained soil rich in organic material. Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from the planting area. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 12 inches and mix in organic matter like peat moss, compost, or manure. This is crucial for areas with heavy clay or soil that retains moisture, as it prevents bulbs from rotting and helps roots access oxygen and nutrients.
Note: Store bulbs correctly until planting. Unpack bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place with good air circulation, at a temperature between 40-70°F.
Bulb Planting Instructions
- Plant daffodil bulbs in the fall when the ground cools and before the first hard frost. The ideal outside temperature is about 65°F or cooler.
- Select a well-drained location that receives full sun to partial shade.
- Dig a hole 6-7" deep in loosened soil. Place bulbs in the hole, spaced about 4-6" apart, with their pointy ends facing up.
- Cover with soil and water well to settle the soil around the bulb. The image shows a ruler indicating a planting depth of 6-7 inches for a daffodil bulb in soil.
Ongoing Daffodil Care
After blooming, leave the foliage in place until it turns yellow and dries out. This allows the plant to absorb sunlight, which produces energy for next year's blooms.
Daffodils can be divided every three to four years. Carefully dig around the plant bed with a trowel, unearth the bulbs, and gently separate them by hand. You can replant some immediately in the same or new locations. They should bloom again the following spring.
