Power Management

Use the ON/OFF Power Switch to power the flash unit on or off. Turn off if it will not be used for an extended period. As a transmitter, it automatically powers off after approximately 90 seconds of idle use. Pressing the camera shutter halfway or any flash button will wake it up. As a receiver, it enters sleep mode after a set period (default 60 minutes, adjustable to 30 minutes). Pressing any flash button will wake it up.

Tip: Disabling Auto Power Off function (C.Fn-STBY) is recommended when the flash is used off-camera.

Flash Mode - TTL Autoflash

In TTL mode, the camera and flash work together to calculate correct exposure. This mode supports FEC, FEL, HSS, and second-curtain sync. Pressing the <MODE> button cycles through flash modes.

ETTL Mode

Press <MODE> to enter E-TTL mode. The LCD will display settings. Half-press the shutter button to focus; aperture and effective flash range will be displayed. A pre-flash fires before the main flash for exposure calculation.

FEC: Flash Exposure Compensation

Adjust flash exposure compensation from -3 to +3 in 1/3 stops for fine-tuning TTL exposure. Use the <+/–> button and Select Dial to set the amount. Press Set Button to confirm.

High-Speed Sync

High-Speed Sync (FP flash) allows synchronization with all camera shutter speeds, useful for aperture priority fill-flash portraits. Press Function Button 2 <SYNC> to display <H>. Note that faster shutter speeds reduce effective flash range. Over-temperature protection may activate after 15 consecutive high-speed sync flashes.

Second-Curtain Sync

Use with slow shutter speeds to create light trails. Set the camera to REAR flash mode.

Flash Mode - M: Manual Flash

Adjust flash output from 1/1 to 1/256 in 1/10 stop increments. Use a handheld flash meter for accurate exposure. Press <MODE> to select <M>. Use the <+/–> button and Select Dial to set output. Press Set Button to confirm.

Optic S1/S2 Secondary Unit Setting: In M mode, press <S1/S2> button to use the flash as an optic S1 (synchronous with main flash) or S2 (ignores pre-flash) secondary flash.

Flash Mode - Multi: Stroboscopic Flash

Fire a rapid series of flashes to capture multiple images of a moving subject. Set firing frequency (Hz), number of flashes, and flash output. Press <MODE> to select <MULTI>. Use Function Button 2 <Times> and Function Button 3 <Hz> with the Select Dial to set flash times and frequency. Turn the Select Dial to set flash output. Press Set Button to confirm.

Calculating Shutter Speed: Shutter speed = Number of Flashes / Flash Frequency. Avoid overheating by not using stroboscopic flash more than 10 times in succession. Allow at least 15 minutes rest between uses.

Wireless Flash Shooting: Radio (2.4G) Transmission

The TT685II-S can act as a transmitter or receiver unit. It can also be controlled by the X1T-C transmitter (sold separately). This system allows advanced wireless multiple flash lighting similar to TTL autoflash shooting.

Wireless Settings

Switch between normal flash and wireless flash. Set to OFF for normal flash.

Setting the Communication Channel

Change channel IDs to prevent interference. Ensure transmitter and receiver units share the same channel ID. Press <MENU> to enter C.Fn CH settings. Use the Select Dial to choose a channel from 1 to 32. Press Set Button to confirm.

Wireless ID Settings

Change wireless ID and channels to avoid interference. Press <MENU> to enter C.Fn ID. Choose OFF to disable channel expansion or select a figure from 01 to 99.

Scan the Spare Channel

Use this function to find unused channels. Set SCAN to START. The device scans from 1% to 100%, displaying 8 spare channels.

5. TTL: Fully Automatic Wireless Flash Shooting

Attach the TT685IIS to the camera as a Transmitter unit. Set M/A/B/C groups to TTL. Set the controlled TT685IIS as the Receiver Unit. Ensure transmitter and receiver units are on the same channel. Position the camera and flashes. Check the flash ready indicator. Press the Transmitter unit's Test Button <> to fire the receiver unit. Adjust receiver position and distance if needed.

Note: Receiver auto power off can be managed via C.Fn settings. Auto AF-assist transmitter may not blink when the receiver's flash ready indicator is lit.

Using Fully Automatic Wireless Flash

FEC and other settings on the transmitter are automatically applied to the receiver. No receiver operation is needed. Follow normal flash shooting methods.

About the Transmitter Unit

Multiple transmitter units can be used with multiple cameras for synchronized shooting.

7. M: Wireless Flash Shooting with Manual Flash

This describes wireless multiple shooting using manual flash. Set all parameters on the transmitter unit. Select <M> mode. Set flash output for each receiver group (A/B/C) using the Function Buttons and Select Dial. Press Set Button to confirm.

Other Applications

Sync Triggering

Use the 2.5mm Sync Cord Jack to connect a trigger for synchronous firing with the camera shutter.

Auto Focus Assist Beam

The built-in AF assist beam activates in low-light conditions to aid autofocus. It turns off once focus is achieved. This feature can be disabled in C.Fn settings (AF set to OFF).

Bounce Flash

Point the flash head towards a wall or ceiling to soften shadows and create a more natural look. Rotate the flash head to adjust the bounce direction. Ensure the surface is plain and white for best results.

ZOOM: Setting the Flash Coverage

Flash coverage can be set automatically to match the lens focal length (20-200mm) or manually. In manual zoom mode, press <ZOOM> and use the Select Dial. If <A> is displayed, coverage is automatic.

Low Battery Warning

A blinking battery symbol on the LCD indicates low battery. Replace batteries immediately.

C.Fn: Setting Custom Functions

Customize flash functions via the C.Fn menu. Use the <MENU> button to access the menu. Select the Custom Function number using the Select Dial. Press Set Button to change the setting. Press <MENU> again to confirm. Long-press the "Clear" button for 2 seconds to reset all C.Fn settings to default.

Protection Function

1. Over-Temperature Protection

To prevent overheating, avoid firing more than 40 continuous flashes at 1/1 power. Allow at least 10 minutes of rest after 40 flashes. If the protection function activates, a symbol will appear on the LCD. Allow approximately 10 minutes for the unit to cool down.

High-Speed Sync Over-Temperature Protection

Tables indicate the number of flashes that activate over-temperature protection at various zoom and power levels during high-speed sync.

2. Other Protections

The system includes protection prompts (E1, E2, E3, E9) for issues like recycling system failure, overheating, high voltage, or firmware upgrade errors. Follow the on-screen prompts or consult a maintenance center.
