Complete Optical Tube Assembly (OTA) Overview
This section provides an overview of the main components of the telescope's optical tube assembly and mount.
Diagram shows the Optical Tube Assembly (OTA) with its Focuser Draw Tube, Focuser Knob, Finderscope Base, and OTA Mounting Bracket. It also illustrates the Alt-Az Mount with its Vertical Adjustment Knob, Horizontal Adjustment Knob, Altitude Rod, Base, and Fine Adjustment Knob. Components like OTA Lens Covers, Tripod Legs, Tray Mount, Accessory Tray, and various knobs and screws are also depicted.
Assembling Telescope
Step 1: Prepare Tripod Legs
Pull the tripod legs down to your desired height. Insert a Tripod Leg Knob into each of the three tripod legs and tighten them to secure the leg extension.
Diagram shows a hand pulling down a tripod leg and inserting a leg knob.
Step 2: Attach Tripod Legs to Mount Base
Remove the wing nuts from the leg screws. Align the holes on the top of the tripod legs with the corresponding holes on the Alt-Az Mount Base. Insert the leg screws into each of the three legs and the base. Secure them with the wing nuts.
Diagram illustrates removing wing nuts, aligning tripod legs with the mount base, inserting screws, and securing with wing nuts. An important note indicates that the Tray Mount Brackets on the tripod must be facing inward for this step.
Step 3: Attach Tray Mount
Extend the Tray Mount to its widest position. Remove the screws and nuts from the end of the tray mount. Place the mount within the Tray Mount Brackets (located inside the tripod legs). Align the holes and secure the tray mount with the screws and nuts.
Diagram shows the tray mount being positioned and secured within the tripod's tray mount brackets.
Step 4: Attach Accessory Tray
Screw the eyepiece Accessory Tray, along with its screw, into the threaded hole on the tray mount.
Diagram shows the accessory tray being screwed into the tray mount.
Step 5: Mount the Optical Tube Assembly (OTA)
Align the Optical Tube (OTA) Mounting Brackets with the holes (labeled A) on top of the Alt-Az Mount Arms. Secure the OTA using the Mount Knobs (labeled B). When attaching the optic to the mount, ensure the Threaded Holes on the OTA (labeled C) and Mount (labeled D) are facing you to correctly complete the next step.
Diagram shows aligning the OTA mounting brackets with the mount arms and securing with knobs. It highlights specific points (A, B, C, D) for alignment and attachment, emphasizing the orientation of threaded holes.

Step 6: Attach Altitude Rod
Slide the Altitude Rod (A) through the hole (B) on the Vertical Adjustment Knob, which is located on the Alt-Az Mount Arm. Secure it with the Vertical Adjustment Knob (C). Use the included Slotted Screwdriver to secure the Altitude Rod to the OTA Threaded Hole (D) using the Altitude Rod Screw.
Diagram shows the altitude rod being slid through a hole on the adjustment knob and secured with a screw. Labels A, B, C, and D indicate the parts involved.
Step 7: Install Finderscope
Slide the Finderscope into the Finderscope Base until it locks securely in place.
Diagram shows the finderscope being slid into its base.
Step 8: Attach Erecting Diagonal
Loosen the thumbscrew (A) on the Focuser Draw Tube. Slide the Erecting Diagonal (B) into the focuser draw tube and tighten the thumbscrew (A) to secure it.
Diagram illustrates loosening a thumbscrew on the focuser, inserting the erecting diagonal, and tightening the thumbscrew.
Step 9: Install Eyepiece and Focus
Loosen the thumbscrew (A) on the erecting diagonal. Slide the H20 Eyepiece (B) into the erecting diagonal and tighten the thumbscrew (A) to secure it. Adjust the Focus Knobs (C) on the OTA until the image is clear.
Diagram shows the eyepiece being inserted into the erecting diagonal and secured with a thumbscrew. It also points to the focus knobs. An important note states that the erecting diagonal must be used with the eyepiece. A separate note mentions that eyepieces can be used with the included Green Moon Filter by screwing the filter underneath the eyepiece before inserting it into the erecting diagonal. Finding targets is easier starting with the H20 Eyepiece.
Step 10: Position Telescope
To position the Optical Tube to your desired angle, adjust the Knobs (A/B). Use the Fine Adjustment Knob (C) on the altitude rod to fine-tune the vertical position if needed.
Diagram shows adjusting knobs for telescope positioning and using the fine adjustment knob for vertical tuning.
Step 11: Triple Magnification (Using Barlow Lens)
To triple magnification, remove the Erecting Diagonal from the Focuser Draw Tube. Insert the 3x Barlow Lens and tighten the thumbscrew (A) on the Focuser Draw Tube to secure it. Then, insert the erecting diagonal into the Barlow Lens and tighten the thumbscrew (B) on the Barlow Lens to secure it. Finally, insert the eyepiece into the erecting diagonal and tighten the thumbscrew (C) on the erecting diagonal. The erecting diagonal will correctly orient the image.
Diagram illustrates removing the erecting diagonal, inserting the Barlow lens, securing it, then inserting the erecting diagonal into the Barlow lens, securing it, and finally inserting the eyepiece.
Step 12: Increase Contrast (Using 1.5x Erecting Eyepiece)
To increase contrast, remove the Barlow lens and the erecting diagonal. Insert the 1.5x Erecting Eyepiece directly into the Focuser Draw Tube. Tighten the thumbscrew (A) on the Focuser Draw Tube. Insert the Eyepiece into the Erecting Eyepiece and tighten the thumbscrew (B) on the Erecting Eyepiece. The Erecting Eyepiece will correctly orient the view.
Diagram shows removing the Barlow lens and erecting diagonal, then inserting the 1.5x erecting eyepiece directly into the focuser draw tube and securing it.
Warnings
- Never use the telescope to look directly at or near the sun. Viewing the sun can cause irreversible eye damage.
- Do not point the telescope at the sun even when you are not looking through it. This can cause internal damage to the telescope.
- Do not leave the telescope unattended at any time. Untrained adults or children may not be familiar with the correct operating procedures.
- To maintain internal optical alignment, handle the telescope with care.
