Warranty
JOHNSON Hydraulic Equipment Co. warrants all new products of its own manufacture to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 90 days. Component parts not of JOHNSON manufacture are covered by the guarantees of their respective manufacturers.
JOHNSON will replace, free of charge, f.o.b. distributor's or customer's warehouse, any parts covered by this warranty which are returned to the factory (transportation charges prepaid) within 90 days after delivery to the original user, should inspection show such parts to be defective in workmanship or material.
This warranty does not apply to products that have been repaired or altered prior to factory inspection, or subjected to abuse, negligence, or accident. It also does not apply to products used in applications for which they were not designed or intended.
Keep this manual handy for ready reference. For parts and major service, consult your authorized Tractor dealer. He has trained servicemen as well as genuine service parts and the necessary tools and equipment to handle all your needs.
Right-hand (R.H.) and Left-hand (L.H.) references are determined by standing at the rear of the tractor or loader and facing the direction of travel.

Operation
- Check Oil Level: Periodically ensure the oil level is not more than 8 inches below the top of the tank. Use only lightweight anti-foam and anti-sludge hydraulic oil for best performance.
- Start-up: Start the tractor and operate the loader, extending all cylinders to remove air. Always run the engine at least at half speed while operating the loader. Operating at very low engine speeds can cause the hydraulic pump to not displace oil fast enough, leading to oil being forced out of the breather.
- Control Operation:
- To RAISE the loader, pull the control lever towards you as far as it will go. The lever returns to Neutral when released.
- To LOWER the loader, push the lever forward.
- Troubleshooting:
- If the loader does not reach maximum height, a shortage of oil is indicated. Check hydraulic oil level.
- Operate the loader several times, and with all cylinders collapsed, check and maintain the correct oil level.
- For smooth performance, ensure the pump is running whenever the loader is operated. If the loader is left in a raised position, start the pump before lowering. Dropping the loader with a "dead pump" can fill oil lines with air, causing jerky operation and oil expulsion from the breather.
- Ballast Requirements: For stability, use two sets of rear wheel weights with 150 lbs. in the ballast box, or one set of rear wheel weights with 270 lbs. in the ballast box.
- Tire Inflation: For maximum tire service, front tires should be inflated to a minimum of 35 p.s.i. (Tire manufacturers recommend 4-ply rating at 70 p.s.i. for commercial type operation.)
Important Safety Reminders:
- Do not operate the loader unless the hydraulic pump is running.
- Ballast tractor rear wheels for stability.
- Lift loads, engage the tractor clutch, and accelerate with care.
- In transport, carry the working unit low.
- Before servicing or adjusting equipment:
- Lower the working unit to the ground (Bucket with springs should not be in tripped position).
- Disengage power and shut off the engine.
- Relieve hydraulic pressure before disconnecting oil lines.
Service
Bolts
Periodically check mounting bolts for maximum loader life. Loose bolts from constant operation can cause excessive wear.
Belt
When belt slippage is first noticed, tighten the belt immediately to prevent excessive wear. Loosen the cap screw on the bracket and move the pump back until a 10-pound pressure midway between the sheaves deflects the belt 1/8 inch. Tighten the cap screw to hold the pump in position.
Screen
After several hours of operation, remove the plug from the bottom of the right upright and drain oil from the reservoir. Disconnect the low-pressure hose from the elbow on the right upright and remove the screen from the tank. Flush and clean the tank and screen. Reassemble. The screen should be removed periodically for cleaning. A clogged screen can cause pump cavitation and rapid pump wear.
Cylinders
Cylinder service typically involves replacing O-Rings and packing to fix leaks. If disassembly reveals defective follower cups, wipers, scored pistons, or barrels, replace these parts.
To replace rings and packing:
- Remove the four stuffing box screws and lockwashers or snap ring from the cylinder.
- Slide the piston rod and attached parts out of the cylinder barrel.
- Remove the lock nut from the end of the piston rod.
- Slide components off the piston rod.
- Replace defective rings, packing, and cylinder cups.
- Assemble the cylinder in reverse order of disassembly, taking care not to damage parts.
CAUTION: DO NOT EXERT EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE CAP-TO-STUFFING BOX CAP SCREWS.
Pump and Valve
If trouble indicates pump or valve failure, do not attempt repairs. Return the unit to the factory for inspection and servicing. Pump and valve pressures are preset by the manufacturer and should not be tampered with, as they are set according to tractor manufacturer recommendations.
