3 Getting Started
3.1 Setting Up
For the First Time Use or After Filter Cartridge Replacement:
- Before using the machine, please wash the feed water tank.
- Remove the feed water tank cover and lift out the feed water tank. Fill it with tap water up to the max line, then place the feed water tank back into position and secure the water tank cover.
- Connect the power supply. The machine will automatically flush. After flushing, it will start producing RO pure water and filling the pure water tank. The "Working" indicator will flash. Once the pure water tank is full, the "Working" indicator will turn off. Pour out the remaining water in the feed water tank.
- Place a container with a volume greater than 1L/33.8 oz below the water spout, and then press and hold the "150mL" key for 5s to drain the RO pure water in the pure water tank.
- NOTE: Please pour out the water obtained during this step; it is not drinkable.
- After the RO water in the pure water tank is drained, unplug the machine, wait for seconds, and then repeat steps 2-4 for about 6-8 times.
- NOTE: If the water has a strange smell or thin bubble foam, it is from the new filter cartridge protection fluid and is harmless. Repeat the above steps to eliminate it.
3.2 Water Dispensing Operation
Put a cup or glass on the drip tray.
Normal temp water dispensing operation
- Choose and press the preferred output water volume key.
- Press the "Normal Temp" key to dispense normal temp water.
Warm water dispensing operation
- Press the "Lock" key to unlock the temperature menu.
- Choose and press the preferred output water volume key.
- Choose and press the preferred temperature (115°F/185°F/212°F) to dispense warm water.
NOTE: When water level reaches the dotted line, always empty the MATE4 feed water tank before refilling with fresh (tap) water. Do not try to refill the feed water tank without removing it first.
3.3 What is TDS?
TDS is the acronym for Total Dissolved Solids, measured in mg/L. It represents the concentration of milligrams of dissolved solids in 1 liter of water. This includes soluble salts (like calcium ions, magnesium ions), ionized organic substances (such as ammonium acetate, sodium sulfate), and some heavy metal ions (chromium, zinc, lead, copper). The TDS value signifies the concentration of soluble substances in water - a higher TDS suggests a larger quantity of dissolved substances in the water.
TDS Range | Rating | Reference Water |
---|---|---|
0~50ppm | Excellent | Water purified by the reverse osmosis system meets the hygiene standards for potable water, making it ideal for direct consumption. |
50~100ppm | Good | Spring or aquifer water contains naturally occurring minerals, stable nutrients, and trace elements. |
100~200ppm | Fair | Hard water is characterized by higher levels of soluble calcium and magnesium compounds. |
200~300ppm | Fair | Tap water can be minimally acceptable for drinking. |
300~400ppm | Fair | Other sources include specific mineral/alkaline water and well water. |
400~500ppm | Poor | Tap and mineral spring water may contain high quantities of dissolved minerals. |
500+ppm | Unacceptable | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends not exceeding certain maximum standards when it comes to water quality. |
4 Maintenance
4.1 Filter Replacement Schedule
Filter Cartridge Lifespan Reminder Display
- When the filter cartridge life remaining is 5%, the "Filter" reminder is on, and the buzzer alarms 5 times before stopping.
- When the filter cartridge reaches the end of its service life, the "Filter" reminder flashes. Upon reaching the service life limit for the first time, it will alarm continuously for 10 times.
Filter Cartridge Life Reminder Reset
Press and hold the "Lock" key for 5 seconds. The buzzer will emit a long beep, indicating the filter cartridge has been reset.
Replacement Filter Cartridge | Replacement Cycle |
---|---|
PCR Composite Filter | 12 Months |
NOTE: 1. The actual service life of the filter cartridge depends on the input water quality and water consumption rate. The figures above are evaluated on a general basis. Please replace the filter cartridge based on the filter life reminder on the control panel. 2. Once the filter cartridge expires, please replace it as soon as possible, otherwise, the filtration performance will be affected greatly.
4.2 Filter Replacement Steps
- Firstly, unplug the machine and remove the water tank, then remove the filter cartridge house cover.
- Align the filter with the replacement wrench and press down, then rotate it in the direction of the arrow until the "S" is aligned, to pull out and remove the old filter.
- Rotate the new filter cartridge in the direction of the arrow and push downwards to lock.
- Press and hold the "Lock" key for 5 seconds. The buzzer will emit a long beep, indicating the filter cartridge has been reset.
4.3 Methods for Descaling the Machine
While the reverse osmosis system effectively filters out impurities, heavy metals, bacteria, and other harmful substances, certain areas with poor water quality or prolonged usage may result in scale accumulation, leading to unpleasant odors and hindering functionality. Here are two options for descaling:
- Citric Acid: Mix 2-3 tablespoons of citric acid with 1.1L of water.
- White Vinegar: Use a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water.
- Lemon Juice: Use a 1:1 ratio of lemon juice and water.
- Prepare the solution and pour it into the water tank. Then, return the water tank to its original position.
- After the pure water tank is filled with RO water, power off the system and let it sit for one hour.
- After one hour, empty the remaining water in the feed water tank and drain the pure water tank. (Place a container with a volume greater than 1L/33.8 oz below the water spout before draining. Refer to chapter 2.9 for the Pure Water Tank Drain Mode).
5 FAQ
- Q: Why are there droplets in the machine or water tank after unpacking?
A: All Ecoviva RO filtration system products undergo meticulous testing with sterile water to ensure optimal filtration performance. Residual droplets might emerge during long-term shipping, but rest assured, this does not impact the functionality of the product. - Q: What is the typical TDS value outputted from the RO system?
A: Ecoviva's RO systems, featuring advanced RO filtration technology with a filtration accuracy of 0.0001µm, can reduce 90%-95% of TDS. However, the output TDS not only depends on the RO membrane but also on the input TDS. For instance, if the input is around 280ppm, the output could range from 14~28ppm. Please note that these values might vary slightly due to particular circumstances. For instance, water from certain regions may contain extremely fine particles. - Q: Why does the water taste poor and have a strange smell?
A: If your unit is new or hasn't been used for a long period, it's suggested to flush the system thrice and carry out around 3-5 rounds of filtration, dispensing the filtered water each time. The unpleasant taste or smell could be caused by the protective fluid in new filter cartridges or by stagnant water in the machine from extended periods of non-use. - Q: After a long period of non-use, I've noticed the water has a high level of TDS. Is this normal?
A: Indeed, this is quite typical and is known as the TDS escalation phenomenon. When the machine is inactive, waste water remains at the raw water end. Without the driving force of the pressure pump, pure water will flow towards the raw water side due to the disparity in osmotic pressure, and osmosis continues until equilibrium is achieved. Therefore, following a significant non-use period, the TDS value of the pure water in the RO membrane will increase until the osmotic pressure difference between the two sides is neutralized and the TDS levels on both sides become almost identical. This explains why the TDS value of the initial production cycle water tends to be higher. - Q: I will be away for a while and won't be using the device. What should I do to properly store it?
A: To ensure the long-term maintenance of your device, please take the following steps: First, drain out the pure water tank and empty the feed water tank. Then, remove the filter cartridge and store them in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator (please avoid the freezer). Finally, unplug the machine. Prior to using the unit again, you will need to reinstall the filter cartridge, run some water through the system, and perform 1-3 cycles of water production (during this step, the water is not drinkable, just discard it).
6 Troubleshooting
Problem or Code | Possible Solution |
---|---|
The RO system does not power on or respond | 1. Make sure the machine is plugged into the outlet and the outlet switch is on (if applicable). 2. Plug the system into a different outlet to check if the outlet is working. 3. If the system does not power on after following the instructions, contact support@ecoviva.co for customer support.
