General Safety Precautions
- Read and understand the Operator's, Parts, and Safety Manual before operating.
- If the seeder is used improperly or safety precautions are not followed, users risk serious injury.
- Slicing blades continue to run for several seconds after the seeder is turned off. Wait until blades stop completely before inspection or maintenance.
- Dust and debris may contain chemicals harmful to health. Work in a well-ventilated area and use approved safety equipment (e.g., dust masks).
- Observe local regulations regarding product usage times and restrictions.
- Adopt proper measures to protect against vibration exposure, including regular maintenance, keeping hands warm, taking breaks, and planning work.
- Operator Preparation & Training: Operators must be trained. If an operator cannot read English, the owner must explain the manual. Become familiar with controls and safety signs. Be prepared to stop the engine quickly. Do not operate if unsure about safety.
- Dress Properly: Wear non-slip footwear, long trousers. Avoid loose clothing or jewelry. Wear protective covering for long hair. Protective gloves are recommended. Use safety glasses and hearing protection.
- Never allow children, unskilled, or improperly trained people to operate the equipment.
- Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
- Never pick up or carry the unit while the engine is running. Always turn off the engine and ensure blades have stopped rotating.
- Keep warning labels and manuals legible and intact.
- Do not operate under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or impairment.
- The owner/user is responsible for accidents or injuries to themselves, others, or property.
Site Preparation & Circumstances
- Evaluate terrain for safe operation. Use only manufacturer-approved accessories.
- Clear the area of objects like rocks, toys, or wire that could be thrown or tangled.
- Ensure the area is clear of pets and people, especially children. Stop the machine if any enter the area.
- Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Work only in daylight or good artificial light.
- Be aware of your responsibility for hazards to others or their property.
- Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
- Avoid dangerous environments: do not use in rain, damp/wet locations, or explosive atmospheres. Engines spark and may ignite fumes.
- Be aware the seeder may bounce upward or jump forward if blades strike buried obstacles like stones, roots, or stumps.
Machine Preparation
- Read the engine manual.
- Do not tamper with or defeat safety devices. Keep guards and shields in place.
- Keep all fasteners secured.
- Check for damaged parts. Damaged guards or parts must be repaired or replaced.
- Verify machine and attachments are in good operating condition.
- Do not engage seeder until ready to use.
- Engine housing and exhaust remain hot after shutdown. Allow to cool before touching or storing near combustibles.
Operating Safely in General
- Use extra care when loading/unloading into a trailer or truck.
- Never operate without safety protective devices in place.
- Do not run the engine in an enclosed area where carbon monoxide fumes can collect.
- Never leave a machine unattended. Turn off the seeder, stop the engine, and ensure blades stop rotating before leaving.
- Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the machine towards you.
- Stop operation if someone approaches.
Starting
- Start according to manual or machine instructions.
- Ensure the seeder is disengaged before starting the engine.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the seeder when starting.
- Do not engage seeder at full throttle; set throttle to idle or lowest possible engine speed.
Operating on Slopes
- Use extra care on slopes.
- Do not operate on slopes if uneasy or uncertain.
- Do not operate on steep slopes.
- Keep all movement on slopes slow and gradual.
- Do not seed near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments.
- Turn on slopes only when necessary, turning slowly and downhill if possible.
- Be sure of your footing on slopes.
Interrupting Operation
- Before leaving the operator's position, shut off the engine.
- Stop the engine, disengage the blade, set the parking brake, and wait for blades to stop rotating before refueling or making depth adjustments (unless adjustable from operator's position).
- Allow the seeder to stop completely and blades to stop rotating before clearing blockages, unclogging, inspecting, maintaining, or repairing.
- Stop the engine, disengage the seeder, set the parking brake, wait for blades to stop rotating, and disconnect the spark plug wire before clearing blockages, cleaning, working on the machine, after striking a foreign object, or if the machine vibrates abnormally.
- Reduce throttle during engine shutdown and turn off fuel if equipped with a shutoff valve.
- Never attempt adjustments while the engine is running, except for specific noted adjustments (e.g., carburetor), keeping hands and feet clear of moving parts.
Maintenance Safety
- Maintain the machine according to the manufacturer's schedule and instructions.
- Park on level ground.
- Never allow untrained personnel to service the machine.
- Guards should only be removed by a qualified technician for maintenance or service and replaced when work is completed.
- Adjust or repair only after the engine has stopped and the seeder has stopped moving.
- Disconnect spark plug wire(s) before any maintenance.
- Replace parts if worn, damaged, or faulty. Use manufacturer-recommended parts.
- Do not dismantle the machine without releasing or restraining forces that could cause parts to move suddenly.
- Provide adequate support (e.g., jack stands) if working beneath the machine.
- Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
- Clean up spilled oil or fuel thoroughly.
- Replace faulty mufflers.
- Keep the engine, muffler, and fuel storage area free of grass, leaves, debris, and grease to reduce fire hazards.
Storage Safety
- Stop the engine and allow to cool before storing.
- Drain the fuel tank outdoors only.
- Store fuel in an approved container in a cool, dry place.
- Keep machine and fuel containers in a locked storage place, out of reach of children.
- Do not store fuel containers or equipment with gasoline inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark (e.g., near furnaces or water heaters with pilot lights).
- Keep gasoline storage areas free of grass, leaves, and grease.
- Clean debris from cutting units, drives, mufflers, and engine to prevent fires.
- Clean up spilled gasoline or oil.
- Store the seeder in a sheltered, dry, frost-free, well-ventilated place.
- Store indoors in a locked-up place out of reach of children when not in use.
Fuel Safety
- Gasoline is flammable; vapors are explosive. Handle with care.
- Store fuel only in approved containers.
- When refueling or checking fuel level: Stop engine, allow to cool, do not smoke, refuel outdoors only, use a funnel, do not overfill. If fuel is spilled, clean it up and allow vapors to clear before starting the engine. Replace fuel caps securely.
- Sparks from static electricity can cause fires or explosions. Flowing fuel generates static electricity. To prevent sparks: Keep containers electrically grounded. Do not fill containers in a vehicle or on a truck/trailer bed with a plastic liner; fill on the ground away from the vehicle.
- When practical, refuel equipment on the ground. If refueling on a truck/trailer, use a portable container, not a dispenser nozzle.
- Keep the dispenser nozzle in contact with the fuel tank/container opening until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device.
- If fuel is spilled on clothing, change it immediately.
Blades
- Blades are sharp and can cut. Use extra caution and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Only replace blades. Never straighten or weld them.
- Keep other persons away from blades.
Vibration and Noise Reduction
- To reduce noise and vibration emission, limit operation time and wear work gloves.
- Use the seeder only as intended.
- Ensure the seeder is in good condition and well maintained.
- Use correct blades and ensure they are in good condition.
- Keep a tight grip on the handle grips.
- Maintain the seeder and keep blades lubricated.
- Plan work schedules to spread product use over longer periods.
Residual Risks
- Even with all safety requirements met, risks remain.
- Potential dangers include health defects from long-term vibration exposure if not managed properly.
- Injuries and property damage can occur from broken components or impact with hidden objects.

Labels
Warning labels are an important part of the safety system. Replace labels if damaged or illegible.

- Move right then pull out to engage transmission.
- Grease bearing every 25 hours of operation.
Blade Wear Indicator: Green, yellow, red labels near the lever indicate blade wear. New blades use the green section; worn blades use the yellow; replacement blades use the red section.
Seed Application Chart: Approximate guidelines for seeding rates based on seed type and setting. Rates are speed dependent.
Lawn Preparation: Mow lawn to 1-2 inches, do not water before seeding. Power rake to dethatch, remove thatch over 1/2 inch. Aerate with core type aerator. Fertilize with broadcast spreader.
Seeding Recommendations: For best results, overseed in two passes at right angles. Water heavily immediately, then lightly for 10-14 days, keeping soil moist. After germination, water less often to promote root growth.
Set-Up Instructions
Note: Units ship with no gas or oil.
- Cut banding and roll seeder off pallet.
- Unfold by pulling up on handle [1]. Slide lock rings [2] down to lock handle in upright position. Slide linkage coupler [3] to the locked position.
- Add oil to the engine crankcase with the engine resting level. Refer to the engine manufacturer's manual for correct type and amount of oil.
- Fill the fuel tank according to the engine manufacturer's specifications.
Controls
Throttle (A): Controls engine speed and vacuum suction level.
Choke Handle (B): Move to "CHOKE" for cold starts, "RUN" to remove choke.
Fuel Valve (C): Move to "OFF" to shut off fuel for transport or storage. Move to "ON" before starting. "OFF" can also "KILL" the engine.
Engine Switch (D): Move to "OFF" to stop the engine, "ON" before starting.
Recoil Starter Handle (E): Pull to start engine. Guide handle back to rope guide for best rope life; do not let it snap back.
Free Wheel Rod (F): Move right and pull out to engage transmission. Push in and move left to disengage.
Parking Brake Rod (G): Move rod up, left, then down to disengage brake. Pull up and right to engage brake.
Forward / Reverse Handle (H): Pull right handle up for forward, push down for reverse.
Blade / Seed Handle (I): Push down left handle to engage blade and begin dropping seed. Release to disengage.
Blade / Seed Handle (J): Pull depth adjustment lever out and move towards handles to lower blades into soil. Never lower blades on hard surfaces. Do not lower blades more than 1/4" into soil to prevent machine damage and hinder germination. Blade wear is indicated by colored labels near the lever (green=new, yellow=worn, red=replace).
Floating Seed Box Pin (K): Unlatch and remove pin to engage floating seed box for consistent height over bumps. Leave pin engaged to disable feature.
Seed Gate Adjustment (L): Loosen knob, adjust seed flow selector to desired rate. See seed application chart for numbers. Tighten knob.
Operation
Before Starting the Engine
- Read the Operator's, Parts and Safety Manual. Familiarize yourself with controls and operation.
- Check engine oil and transaxle fluid levels; add if necessary.
- Fill fuel tank with good quality, clean, unleaded gasoline (petrol) using a funnel to avoid spills.
Starting the Engine
- Open the fuel valve.
- Move the engine switch to "ON".
- Move choke lever to "CHOKE" for cold starts (may not be needed for warm engines; excessive choke can flood engine).
- Move throttle to midway between fast and slow positions.
- Pull recoil starter slowly until resistance is felt, then pull firmly.
- Once engine starts, slowly move choke to "RUN" position as needed.
- Set desired engine speed with throttle. Keep speed low until familiar with machine.
Operating the Seeder
- Ensure both handles are in a released, neutral position.
- Ensure blades are in the highest position and not touching the ground.
- Start the engine, keeping speed low until familiar with driving.
- Release the parking brake and engage the transmission.
- Drive the machine to the area to be seeded.
- Once on soil, adjust depth to a maximum of 1/4" into the soil. Do not lower blades on hard surfaces.
- Engage the blade and seed handle and drive to seed.
- After seeding, raise blades to the highest position before driving on hard surfaces to prevent machine damage.
Stopping / Transporting the Seeder
DANGER: DO NOT run the engine in an enclosed area where dangerous carbon monoxide fumes can collect.
- Ensure blades are raised to the highest position before driving on hard surfaces.
- Move the engine switch to the "OFF" position.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position.
- Disengage the transmission if moving in an enclosed area.
- Once in final location, engage the transmission.
- Engage the parking brake.
- To fold handles: Slide lock rings up, slide linkage coupler up on transmission linkage, then fold handles downward. Failure to slide linkage coupler first can damage the linkage.
Storage
To prevent explosion or ignition of vaporized fuel, do not store equipment with fuel in the tank or carburetor in an enclosure with an open flame (e.g., furnace or water heater pilot).
Before Storage (Exceeding 30 Days)
- Drain all fuel from the fuel tank and lines.
- Start the engine and run until fuel from the carburetor float bowl is used and the engine stops.
- While the engine is warm, drain crankcase oil and replace with proper weight oil for the next season's use.
- Remove the spark plug, squirt a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder. Slowly pull the starter a few times to distribute oil, then reinstall the spark plug.
- Top off if necessary (see engine manual).
To Put into Service After Extended Storage
- Check for loose parts and tighten if necessary.
- Fill the fuel tank and check engine oil level.
- Reinstall spark plug.
- Start the engine and check for fuel leaks; repair any leaks before operating.
Washing the machine: Use water and mild detergent. Ensure all detergent is removed and machine is thoroughly dry. DO NOT use water near the engine. DO NOT use a pressure washer.
Maintenance
WARNING: Stop the engine, ensure blades stop rotating, and remove spark plug wire before performing maintenance. Use genuine Classen parts to avoid malfunction, injury, and voiding warranty. Carbon monoxide is deadly; ensure fresh air when running the engine. Replace illegible warning decals immediately.

Maintaining Tire Pressure
Check tire pressure before each use. Maximum air pressure is 40 psi (176 kPa).
Lubricating Linkages
Every 25 hours, lubricate all linkages with dry-film Teflon lubricant (use dry coating to avoid dirt attraction).
Blade Rotation
Check blades before each use. If worn on one side, they can be rotated 180°.
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop rotating, remove spark plug cable.
- Inspect blades for cracks and wear. If worn, rotate or replace all blades at once.
- Remove two bolts/nuts holding a blade. Rotate blade 180° so beveled side faces away from shaft assembly.
- Reinstall with bolts/nuts.
- Repeat for all blades.
- Reinstall Blade Assembly.
Grease Bearings
Grease bearings every 25 hours (four bearings: two for shaft assembly, two for front wheels).
Grease Front Wheel Bearings:
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- Two people needed: one lifts handles to elevate front wheels; second person inserts wood block under front hopper. Do not lower machine onto block until second person is clear.
- Remove wheel e-rings and washers. Remove wheels and keys.
- Connect grease gun and pump approx. 0.1 oz. grease per bearing. Over-packing can cause overheating and premature wear.
- Slide wheels back on, align keyholes, reinsert keys. Reinstall washers and e-rings.
- Two people needed: one lifts handles to elevate hopper slightly off block; second person removes block. Lower machine carefully when second person is clear.
Greasing Shaft Assembly Bearings:
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- Remove right shaft cover (two bolts).
- Remove left shaft cover (five bolts/washers).
- Connect grease gun and pump approx. 0.1 oz. grease per bearing.
- Reinstall covers and spark plug cable.
Blade Assembly Replacement
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- On right side, remove right shaft cover.
- Remove bolts, washers, bearing collar; loosen set screw. Remove shaft guard and bearing.
- On left side, remove front belt shield.
- Remove bolts from pulley hub, slide pulley and belts off shaft.
- Remove bolts, washers, and left shaft cover.
- Remove bolts, washers, bearing collar; loosen set screw. Slide bearing off shaft.
- Remove old shaft assembly. Attach new assembly shaft on left side, sliding on bearing, locking set screw with Loctite 242. Attach bearing with bolts/nuts from step 7. Pump approx. 0.1 oz. grease per bearing.
- Attach left shaft cover.
- Slide pulley with hub back onto shaft with belts, ensuring key is in keyway.
- When pulley is on and belts are straight, lock pulley by tightening two bolts into hub.
- Reinstall front belt shield.
- Move to right side, slide shaft through shaft guard and bearing. Attach bearing collar and shaft guard with hardware from step 3. Lock down set screw on bearing with Loctite 242. Pump approx. 0.1 oz. grease per bearing.
- Reinstall right cover.
- Attach spark plug wire.
Blade Reel Belts Replacement
Check belts for wear every 25 hours. Replace if cracked, squealing, or slipping.
CAUTION: Do not place fingers between pulley and belt while rotating.
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- On left side, remove front belt shield.
- Remove bolts, washers, and left shaft cover.
- Remove blade reel belts.
- Install new belts.
- Reinstall cover from step 3, ensuring belt is routed inside guide bolts.
- Reinstall cover from step 2.
- Attach spark plug wire.
- Run machine to ensure blade reel engages and disengages.
Transmission Belt Replacement
Check belts for wear every 25 hours. Replace if cracked, squealing, or slipping.
CAUTION: Do not place fingers between pulley and belt while rotating.
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- Remove five bolts/washers on frame access plate and remove plate.
- Pull on idler pulley to relieve belt tension and remove transmission belt.
- Install new belt.
- Reinstall frame rear access plate.
- Reinstall Blade Reel Belts.
- Attach spark plug wire.
Gear Box Belt Replacement
Check belts for wear every 25 hours. Replace if cracked, squealing, or slipping.
CAUTION: Do not place fingers between pulley and belt while rotating.
- Turn engine OFF, ensure blades stop, remove spark plug cable.
- Follow Blade Reel Belts Replacement Section to remove blade reel belts.
- Follow Transmission Belt Replacement Section to remove transmission belt.
- Loosen two bolts behind belt tensioner plate under gearbox.
- Using a deep socket, loosen bolt behind idler pulley spring and under gearbox.
- Push gearbox towards engine pulley and remove gearbox belt.
- Install new belt.
- Pull gearbox away from engine pulley and tighten bolt under gearbox.
- Pull gearbox away from engine pulley and tighten belt tensioner plate. Ensure new belt is tensioned properly (should not deflect by more than 1/2").
- Reinstall Transmission belt.
- Reinstall Blade Reel Belts.
- Attach spark plug wire.

Warranty
2-Year Limited Warranty
Classen products are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for two (2) years from the date of purchase from an authorized dealer. Schiller Grounds Care's responsibility is limited to repairing or replacing defective parts at their option. Warranty on replaced parts expires with the original product warranty.
Express Warranties Disclaimed: Schiller Grounds Care, Inc. makes no other express or implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. All other warranties are specifically disclaimed. Implied warranties are limited to the duration of this written limited warranty.
Obtaining Warranty Service
Warranty service must be performed by an authorized Classen dealer. To find a dealer, visit www.classenturfcare.com and click "FIND A DEALER". Contact Technical Services Department of Schiller Grounds Care for assistance.
Warranty Period & Transferability: The warranty begins on the date of purchase by the original customer and is not transferable. The original purchaser is responsible for delivery costs to/from the service center and for any premium charges for overtime labor. Proof of purchase is required.
Exclusions
- Engines and Other Manufacturers: Schiller Grounds Care makes no warranty on engines or their parts (spark plugs, lubricants, starters, carburetors), which are covered by the engine manufacturer. Other parts not manufactured by Schiller Grounds Care (tires, batteries, gearboxes, etc.) may be covered by their respective manufacturers' warranties.
- Wear Items: Does not cover normal wear and tear, routine maintenance parts (tires, batteries, transmissions, clutches, filters, gearboxes, etc.).
- Negligence and Improper Maintenance/Repair: Does not cover equipment subjected to misuse, neglect, improper storage, or accidents. Does not cover damage from freight carriers or failure to follow operating instructions. Does not cover repairs due to unauthorized modifications. Does not cover damage from lack of proper storage protection. Does not cover damage from incompatible parts, supplies, or accessories.
- Improper Use: Does not cover products subject to misuse, abuse, neglect, accident, or failure to assemble, operate, or maintain per instructions. Does not cover altered or modified products affecting performance or durability.
- Other Exclusions: Does not include reconditioned, refurbished, used, or demonstration equipment. Excludes failures due to acts of nature.
- Extended Warranty: Schiller Grounds Care disclaims responsibility for separately purchased extended warranties.
- Disclaimer of Consequential Damage: Schiller Grounds Care disclaims liability for incidental or consequential damages (e.g., gasoline expense, delivery costs, travel, loss of revenue, etc.). Some states may not allow these limitations.
