- Turn OFF Normal Power. The Red LED will turn OFF. The Emergency Light will illuminate.
Shunt Relay Application
Functional Devices' Emergency Bypass / Shunt Relays are UL924 listed and suitable for shunting around wall switches. This ensures emergency lighting activates during a loss of normal utility power.
When Normal Power is present, the ESR relay coil is activated, and the emergency panel receives power from the Normal Power source. The lighting load can be controlled by an individual wall switch.
When Normal Power is lost, the ESR coil deactivates, and the Normally Closed (N/C) contact closes. An Automatic Transfer Switch then switches to backup (generator) power, illuminating the lighting load irrespective of the wall switch or controller setting.

Diagram 2: System Applications
DIMMING OVERRIDE LOW VOLTAGE: This configuration shows the ESR relay integrated into a system with a dimmer control for the emergency load, connected via a Normal Panel and Emergency Panel, with inputs from Utility Hot/Neutral and Generator/Inverter sources.
BYPASS/SHUNT APPLICATION: This diagram details the ESR relay's use in a bypass/shunt setup. It shows the Normal and Emergency Lighting controlled via a Wall Switch. The ESR relay is connected between the Normal Panel (Utility Hot/Neutral) and the Emergency Panel, with inputs from Utility Hot/Neutral and Generator/Inverter sources. The wiring includes connections for Normal/Emergency Lighting, Wall Switch, and the ESR relay itself (White/Black, White/Yellow).
