Model Numbers: HTCPD (UK Plug) HTCPDX (European Plug)
Getting Started
When unpacking your new HabiStat thermostat, please read all instructions thoroughly to understand its operation.
Helpful graphics are provided for a visual representation of how to use your new thermostat. Retain all documents for future reference.
Thermostat Features Overview
- A: LCD screen displaying current temperature in Celsius.
- B: Heat Indicator: Shows when the thermostat is calling for heat. If the set temperature is exceeded by 3°C, 'HHH' will flash and an alarm will sound.
- C: Up Indicator: Press or press and hold to increase temperature in 0.1°C increments.
- D: Down Indicator: Press or press and hold to decrease temperature in 0.1°C increments.
- E: Locating Tabs: For permanent fixing using screws or double-sided tape.
- F: Waterproof, chemically resistant, removable temperature sensor. If detached, 'EEE' will flash and the alarm will sound.
- G: Plug for connection to mains power.
- H: Socket for connection to heater (max load 450 watts at 220-240V~50Hz AC).
- I: Super quick acting external fuse (FF3.15 amp).
- J: Suction cup for securing the probe to a smooth surface.
Detailed Operation
This thermostat measures temperatures from -35°C to 120°C but controls temperatures between 0°C and 50°C.
Default Settings: Out of the box, the thermostat is set to 30°C with a fixed over-temperature alarm of 3°C above the set temperature.
Alarm Functionality:
- To enable the alarm sound under normal conditions: Press and hold both Up and Down indicators for 5 seconds until 'AL' is displayed.
- To disable the alarm sound under normal conditions: Press and hold both Up and Down indicators for 5 seconds until 'NO' is displayed.
- In case of over-temperature, 'HHH' will flash on the screen regardless of alarm setting. If the alarm is enabled, an audible alarm will also sound.
- If the thermostat's probe reads a temperature 3°C or more below the set temperature, 'LLL' will flash on the display, but no alarm will sound.
- If the probe becomes unplugged or faulty, 'EEE' will flash on the screen, and an alarm will sound (unless the alarm is disabled).
Symbol Indicator: A symbol on the thermostat indicates when it is sending power to the heat source. This symbol will flash if the thermostat is in an alarm mode.
Adjusting Temperature: Press the directional arrow buttons (C or D) or press and hold them to increase or decrease the temperature in 0.1°C increments. Once the desired temperature is flashing, release the button. The new temperature is set when the flashing stops.
Installation Guide
Components:
- Dimming Thermostat
- Heat source (e.g., Basking Spot lamp)
- Mains power connection
- Heater connection socket
- Thermostat probe
Vivarium Setup:
- Hot end (4): Place all heaters, background, and the basking spot at one end of the cage.
- Cooler end (6): This area will be cooler than the set temperature.
- Basking spot (9): The primary area for the reptile to warm up.
- Temperature gradient (3): Reptiles are ectotherms and regulate body temperature via their environment. Your setup must have a correct temperature gradient, with a hotter end, a cooler end, and a basking spot. The reptile will move along the gradient to find the correct temperature.
Placement:
- Place the heat source (2) at the hot end of the vivarium (4) to create a basking spot (9).
- A dimming thermostat provides proportional power to the heater. The Heat Indicator (B) shows when the thermostat is active.
- The heat source (2) should not be oversized for the vivarium but must be capable of reaching the correct basking spot temperature. Use a heat source wattage that allows the thermostat to operate minimally, rather than constantly dimming. The thermostat should primarily control the basking spot temperature, not the cool side.
- Do not overload the thermostat; the total load must not exceed 450 watts.
- Set the thermostat temperature a few degrees cooler than the desired basking spot temperature to ensure the cool end (6) does not get too hot.
- The thermostat probe (7) should be placed just away from the basking spot (9) and not in direct line of sight to the heat source.
- Always check the basking spot and cool side temperatures with a separate thermometer for accuracy.
Diagram Description: The diagram illustrates the setup of a reptile vivarium with a HabiStat Dimming Thermostat. It shows the placement of the heat source (2), thermostat probe (7), mains connection (1), and the resulting temperature gradient with a hot end (4), basking spot (9), and cool end (6).
Heat Source Types: The diagram also shows various heat source types compatible with the thermostat: Heat Bulb, Heat Mat, Deep Heat Projector, Ceramic Heater, and Heat Cable.
