HOW TO USE THE DEAD-END PRESSURE GAUGE
The dead-end pressure test is performed with this pressure gauge, capable of measuring air pressures from 0 ­ 100 psi. While typical, in-plant compressed air systems operate at pressures near the upper end of this scale, the OSHA Standard for cleaning with compressed air dictates that the air pressure at the output nozzle when dead-ended, otherwise known as the static pressure, be less than 30 psi.
To make this measurement easy to read, the gauge is calibrated with green and red zones. Green indicates output pressure less than 30 psi ­ an OSHA compliant air gun. Red indicates output pressure more than 30 psi ­ a non-compliant air gun. Attached to the input of the gauge, is a rubber adapter. This provides an air-tight, dead-end connection to ensure measurement accuracy. To test the output pressure, hold the air gun in one hand, and the gauge in the other. Insert the adapter into the output nozzle of the air gun and press tightly. Turn on the air gun by activating the trigger or valve, and record the dead-end pressure reading on the gauge. Because of their nature, homemade or modified air guns will nearly always be non-compliant. All air guns failing the dead-end pressure test should be tagged for replacement.
