Charter OCAP 4-Device Remote Control

The C4000 Remote Control by Universal Electronics is a sophisticated universal remote designed to consolidate up to four of your original home entertainment remote controls into one easy-to-use product. This manual guides you through the setup and operation of your new remote.

Installing Batteries

  1. On the back of the remote, push the tab and lift off the battery cover.
  2. Insert two (2) AA batteries, matching the + and - marks with those in the battery case.
  3. Align the cover's keys with the case's holes and press the cover back into place until it clicks.
  4. Test the remote by pressing any mode key. The LED (red light) should blink once if batteries are inserted correctly.

Note: When batteries need replacement, the remote will cease to operate. Replacing the batteries will restore full functionality with your saved settings.

Programming Device Control

The C4000 is preprogrammed for a cable box, RCA TV, Toshiba DVD player, and Pioneer audio receiver. To control other brands, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the device you wish to program.
  2. Press the desired device key (e.g., AUX, DVD, TV, CBL, or STB) once. The key will blink once. Then, press and hold SET UP until the selected mode key blinks twice.
  3. Refer to the "Setup Codes" section to find the code for your device's brand and enter the first five-digit code. The selected mode key should blink twice upon correct entry. A long blink indicates an invalid entry; repeat steps 2-3 with the same code.
  4. Aim the remote at the device and press POWER. The device should turn off. If not, repeat steps 2-3, trying each code for your brand. If no code works, try the "Searching for Your Code" procedure.

Note: If the device does not have a POWER key, use the (Play) key.

Repeat these steps for each device you want to control. Record the working device codes in the provided boxes for future reference.

Setting Up a Combo Unit

For combo units (e.g., TV/DVD, TV/VCR), follow these special steps:

  1. Turn on the combo unit and insert media (DVD or cassette).
  2. Press the appropriate device key (e.g., DVD for TV/DVD) once. Then, press and hold SET UP until the key blinks twice.
  3. Enter the first five-digit code for your combo device from the "Setup Codes" section. The key should blink twice.
  4. Aim the remote at the combo device and press POWER. The device should turn off. If not, repeat steps 2-3, trying all codes for your brand.

Note: If a separate TV code is listed for your combo device, program it to control volume (see "Programming Device Control").

Record the working device codes for your combo unit.

Searching for Your Code

If listed codes do not work or your brand is not listed:

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Press the device key (e.g., TV) once, then press and hold SET UP until it blinks twice.
  3. Enter 9 9 1, then the device code digit (1 for TV, 2 for DVD/VCR, 3 for Audio, 0 for Cable). The key blinks twice.
  4. Aim the remote at the device and press POWER.
  5. Press and release CH+ repeatedly until the device turns off.
  6. Press POWER to turn the device back on, then press SET UP to lock the code.

Note: If the device doesn't turn on in step 6, press CH- to cycle backward through codes and press SET UP when the device turns on.

Repeat for other devices, substituting the appropriate device key.

Checking the Codes

To find the five-digit code currently operating your equipment:

  1. Press the device key once, then press and hold SET UP until it blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 9 0. The key blinks twice.
  3. Press 1 to view the first digit. Count the blinks (e.g., 3 blinks = 3). If the key does not blink, the digit is 0. Record the digit.
  4. Repeat step 3 four more times using keys 2, 3, 4, and 5 for the remaining digits.

Record the codes in the appropriate boxes. Repeat for other devices.

  1. Press CBL (or STB) once, then press and hold SET UP until it blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 7 3. The key blinks twice.

  3. Press CH+. The key blinks once.
  4. Press CBL once. The key blinks twice.

Channel keys will now only control the cable converter, regardless of the selected mode.

  2. Enter 9 9 3. The key blinks twice.
  3. Press VOL-. The key blinks four times, indicating volume is unlocked for that device.

Repeat for other devices needing independent volume control.

Unlocking All Volume Control (Global Volume Unlock)

  1. Press and hold SET UP until the last selected device key blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 9 3. The key blinks twice.
  3. Press VOL+. The key blinks four times.

Volume controls (VOL+, VOL-, MUTE) will now only affect the selected device's volume, regardless of the current mode.

Using the System ON/OFF Key

Pressing SYSTEM ON/OFF once turns your programmed devices on or off in their programmed sequence. Only devices programmed into the remote will be affected.

Using Keymover

Keymover allows you to map (copy) keys from one mode (source) to another (destination). For example, to map volume control keys from TV mode to DVD mode:

  1. Press CBL (or STB) once, then press and hold SET UP until it blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 9 4. The key blinks twice.
  3. Press the source device key (e.g., TV).
  4. Press the source key to be moved (e.g., VOL-).
  5. Press the destination device key (e.g., DVD).
  6. Press the destination key (e.g., VOL+).

Repeat steps 1-6 to map additional keys (e.g., VOL- and MUTE). After programming, you can control TV volume and mute from the DVD mode.

Restoring All Keymover Keys in a Single Mode

  1. Press CBL or STB once, then press and hold SET UP until it blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 9 4. The key blinks twice.

  3. Enter 9 9 4. The key blinks twice.
  4. Press and release the device key twice (e.g., CH+ in TV mode).

Custom Programming Reset

This function removes all custom programming (Volume Lock, Channel Control Lock, Keymover) but retains device programming.

  1. Press and hold SET UP until the last selected device key blinks twice.
  2. Enter 9 8 0. The key blinks twice, pauses, and blinks twice again to confirm clearing.
