Introduction
The A-AG401-A-06 module prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of Park unless the driver presses and releases a designated button on or under the dash. An audible alarm will sound when the button is pressed. The vehicle will be able to shift out of Park for 10 seconds after the button has been released.
Installation Instructions
IMPORTANT - READ BEFORE INSTALLATION
It is the installer's responsibility to route and secure all wiring harnesses where they cannot be damaged by sharp objects, mechanical moving parts, and high heat sources. Failure to do so could result in damage to the system or vehicle and create possible safety concerns for the operator and passengers.
Avoid placing the module where it could encounter strong magnetic fields from high current cabling connected to motors, solenoids, etc. Avoid radio frequency energy from antennas or inverters next to the module. Avoid high voltage spikes in vehicle wiring by always using diode clamped relays and solenoids when installing upfitter circuits.
CAUTION
All electronic products are susceptible to damage from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Ground yourself before handling or working with the module and harnessing by first touching chassis ground, such as the barrel of the cigarette lighter.
AutoGARD Module Mounting
Remove the lower dash panel below the steering column area. Find a suitable location to mount the module so that the Diagnostic LEDs can be viewed with the lower dash panel removed. Secure the module using 2-sided foam tape, screws, or wire ties. Locate the module in an area away from any high heat sources. Do not actually mount the module until all wire harnesses are routed and secure (mounting the module is the last step of the installation).
Shift Lock AutoGARD Switch Harness (Part #840-00151)
This harness includes the button that activates the AutoGARD system.
- Drill a 0.500-inch hole in a location that is close enough to the shifter to be accessed with one hand while the other hand reaches the shifter.
- Unplug the 2-pin Black connector from the harness and route the connector through the previously drilled hole.
- Install the button in the hole.
- Plug the mating Black connectors together and then plug the 4-pin Molex connector into the mating connector at the AutoGARD module.
AutoGARD Shift Lock Harness (Part #840-00188)
This harness connects to the vehicle's shift lock and tow haul circuits.
- Remove the 3 screws from the lower half of the steering column cover.
- Remove the clamp shell panels.
- Unplug the solenoid connector and plug the mating connectors from the A-AG401-A-06 (part #840-00188) into the mate.
- Unplug the tow haul connector and plug the mating connectors from the A-AG401-A-06 (part #840-00188) into the mate.
- Plug the 10-pin Molex connector into the mating connector at the AutoGARD module.
Wiring Diagram and Connections (Module Part #820-00013-002)
The AutoGARD module (A-AG401-A-06) has a 10-pin connector. The following describes the connections for the two harnesses:
- AutoGARD Switch Harness (Part #840-00151): This harness provides the activation button. It contains the following wires that connect to the AutoGARD module's 10-pin connector:
- Red wire: Connects to Pin 4 (+12V).
- Light Blue wire: Connects to Pin 5 (Shift Lock).
- Pink wire: Connects to Pin 6 (Shift Lock).
- White/Black Jumper wire: Connects to Pin 3 (Park Signal).
- White/Black wire: Connects to Pin 1 (Ground).
- AutoGARD Shift Lock Harness (Part #840-00188): This harness connects to the vehicle's solenoid and tow haul circuits. It contains the following wires that connect to the AutoGARD module's 10-pin connector:
- Gray wire: Connects to Pin 1 (Ground).
- White/Black Jumper wire: Connects to Pin 2 (Ground).
- White/Black Jumper wire: Connects to Pin 3 (Park Signal).
- Red wire: Connects to Pin 4 (+12V).
- Light Blue wire: Connects to Pin 5 (Shift Lock).
- Pink wire: Connects to Pin 6 (Shift Lock).
- Module 10-Pin Connector Pinout Summary:
- Pin 1: Ground (Connected by 840-00151 White/Black, and 840-00188 Gray/White/Black)
- Pin 2: Ground (Connected by 840-00188 White/Black)
- Pin 3: Park Signal (Connected by 840-00151 White/Black, and 840-00188 White/Black)
- Pin 4: +12V (Connected by 840-00151 Red, and 840-00188 Red)
- Pin 5: Shift Lock (Connected by 840-00151 Lt. Blue, and 840-00188 Lt. Blue)
- Pin 6: Shift Lock (Connected by 840-00151 Pink, and 840-00188 Pink)
- Pins 7-10: Connected to the 840-00188 Shift Lock Harness.
Note: The diagram on page 3 of the original document provides a visual representation of these connections.
AutoGARD Operating Instructions
After installation, verify the system's functionality:
- Ensure that the vehicle cannot be shifted out of Park.
- Press the previously installed button and confirm that an audible alarm is heard from the AutoGARD module.
- Release the button and confirm that the vehicle can be shifted out of Park within 10 seconds of releasing the button.
- Press and release the button, then wait more than 10 seconds and confirm that the vehicle cannot be shifted out of Park.
DO NOT PUT VEHICLE IN SERVICE IF IT DOES NOT PASS ALL OF THE ABOVE TESTS.
