Installation Overview
You may need:
- Copper Tubing
- Iron Pipe
- Pex Tubing
Step 1: Shut Off Water Supplies
Before beginning installation, shut off all water supplies to the fixture.
Diagram 1: Pipe Connection Types
This diagram illustrates the types of pipe connections compatible with the valve body: Copper Tubing, Iron Pipe, and Pex tubing.
Diagram 2: Rough-In Body Installation
This diagram shows the rough-in valve body (labeled 1) being mounted. Consider the type and thickness of your finished wall before placing the mounting bracket. Install the body so its front surface is flush with the front of the plasterguard (labeled 2) ± 1/4 inch. For models with stops, the plasterguard must be flush or sub-flush 1/4 inch to the finished wall. Mount the body using the two stringer mounting holes (labeled 3) on the bracket. Remove the cover (labeled 4) to access these mounting holes. Ensure the word "UP" (labeled 5) is oriented upwards on the valve body during installation.
Diagram 3: Measurement References
This diagram provides key measurement references. It indicates distance (1) from the stringer (2) to the front of the plasterguard, and the distance (4) from the stringer (2) to the front of the bonnet. It also shows the finished wall surface (3). For thin wall installations, ensure the plasterguard is behind the wall, or the wall is flush with the plasterguard's front. The RP47202 may be needed for thin wall installations.
Diagram 4: Diverter and MultiChoice Installation
This diagram illustrates the diverter and the MultiChoice rough-in body installed within the same finished wall.
Step 2: Connect Valve Body to Water Supplies
Connect the valve body to water supplies using the appropriate fittings for your valve body type (copper tubing, iron pipe, or Pex). For Pex, use the correct fitting for crimping and the appropriate tool for cold expansion. If either of the two outlet ports will not be used, seal it with a pipe plug. Note: Port (1) is the cold inlet, and port (2) is the hot inlet. For back-to-back or reverse installations (hot on right, cold on left), install the body as described but reverse the water supply lines. In this case, port (1) is the hot inlet and port (2) is the cold inlet.
Diagram 5: Pipe Connection Details
This diagram shows how to connect the top outlet (1) to the shower pipe and the bottom outlet (2) to the tub spout pipe using proper fittings. The pipe (3) between the valve body and the tub spout must be a minimum of 1/2 inch (13 mm) copper pipe or 1/2 inch (13 mm) iron pipe. It should be a straight drop, no less than 8 inches (203 mm) and no more than 18 inches (457 mm) long, with only one 90-degree elbow to the tub spout nipple. Do not use PEX tubing for the tub spout drop. High-flow models do not have a tub outlet.
Step 3: Prepare for Testing
Remove the bonnet (1) and test cap (2) before soldering. Leave the screen (3) installed. Warning: Avoid soldering at high temperatures, as this can damage the screen. If using a model with stops, remove the stops (4) before soldering. Do not install the bonnet or test cap before soldering.
Step 4: Pressure Testing and Flushing
This section details how to test the installation for leaks and flush the system.
Diagram 6: Pressure Testing Components
This diagram shows the components involved in pressure testing and flushing: cover (1), bonnet (2), test cap (3), O-ring (4), filter screen (5), and stops (6 & 7) with their associated nuts (6) and stems (7) for installation into the valve body (8).
Procedure:
- Prior to testing, remove the cover (1), bonnet (2), and test cap (3).
- Ensure the O-ring (4) and filter screen (5) are properly installed.
- Reinstall the cap and bonnet, tightening them securely.
- Plug both outlets with appropriate fittings.
- Check for leaks.
- After testing, remove the shower and/or tub spout plugs and flush the system.
- After flushing, remove the filter screen (5) and reinstall the cap, bonnet, and cover.
- For models with stops, install the stops (6 & 7) and set them to the full open position.
- To install stops: Thread nut (6) onto stem (7). Press the stem and nut assembly into the body (8) and tighten using a 3/8 inch, 6-point deep well socket. Use a flat head screwdriver to adjust the stem clockwise to close and counterclockwise to open.
