Before Installation

  1. Determine the speaker location.
  2. Perform an obstruction survey using a stud finder to ensure no studs, conduit, pipes, heating ducts, pocket doors, or air returns interfere with the speaker. If unsure, drill a small pilot hole and use a coat hanger wire to check for obstructions.
  3. Cut the mounting hole using a keyhole or drywall saw. Run speaker wires from the mounting hole to the amplifier location.

NOTE: CONSULT LOCAL BUILDING CODES BEFORE RUNNING SPEAKER WIRES THROUGH CEILINGS.

Installation

SONOS In-Ceiling by Sonance features an integral Roto-Lock® mounting system for quick mounting into existing ceilings.

  1. Strip 1/4 - 1/2" (6 - 12mm) of insulation from each speaker lead. Twist strands or tin exposed wire with solder to prevent stray strands.
  2. The speaker's terminals are spring-loaded. Push the top of each terminal down to open the connector and insert the exposed wires. The positive terminal is marked with a red dot; the negative with a black dot. Ensure amplifier "+" connects to speaker "+" and amplifier "-" connects to speaker "-".
  3. Ensure all Roto-Lock toggle feet are retracted. Insert the speaker into the ceiling hole. The Roto-Lock system accommodates ceiling material thickness of 1-1/4" (32mm). With the toggle foot cap removed, it accommodates up to 1-7/8" (48mm).
  4. For thicker ceiling materials (e.g., double drywall), you may need to remove part of the two-piece toggle feet. Use a small screwdriver to release the locking levers.
  5. Tighten the screws on the speaker baffle. The Roto-Lock toggle feet will rotate and clamp the speaker. Stop when resistance is felt, indicating successful clamping.
  6. The micro-trim grille is held by magnets. Place the grille against the speaker; magnets will secure it. The grille trim should contact the ceiling all around the speaker for a proper fit.

Figure 4: Removing the Caps from the Roto-Lock Toggle Feet, Figure 5: Inserting the Speaker into the Mounting Hole, and Figure 6: Tightening the Roto-Lock Screws illustrate these steps. IMPORTANT: ALWAYS USE LOW TORQUE SETTINGS; NEVER OVER-TIGHTEN. ADJUST ROTO-LOCK CLAMP TENSION SO THE SPEAKER FRAME IS FLAT FOR PROPER GRILLE FIT.

Speaker Adjustments

Pivoting Woofer and Midrange/Tweeter

SONOS In-Ceiling speakers have pivoting drivers. For stereo or front/center/right home theater use, pivot drivers towards the listening area. For surround channels, pivot drivers towards a wall or window, away from listeners.

Apply light pressure to the ring around the woofer, midrange, and tweeter cone to pivot. Avoid touching the cone itself.

Figure 7: Pivoting Tweeter Left, Pivoting Woofer Right shows driver adjustment.

Grille Painting Instructions

Before You Begin

SONOS by Sonance In-Wall and In-Ceiling speaker grilles cover the entire speaker frame, so only the grilles require painting. The speakers themselves do not need painting.

IMPORTANT: IF THE WALL OR CEILING WILL BE PAINTED AFTER SPEAKER INSTALLATION, MASK THE SPEAKER FLANGE AND BAFFLE BEFORE PAINTING.

Figure 8 shows masking areas.

Preparing The Grille For Painting

Painting The Grille

  1. Prime the grille with a metal primer/bonder spray. Follow the manufacturer's directions.
  2. Use water-based latex paint. Thin the paint with a thinning agent (1:1 ratio) and strain through a mesh strainer to remove lumps. IMPORTANT: For increased durability, consider oil-based paint for VP Extreme Series speakers installed outdoors.
  3. Use a small touch-up or cap-spray gun with a #3 tip. Set the nozzle to a medium to wide fan and the pressure regulator to 60psi.
  4. Lightly spray the front of the grille in 3 quick strokes from about 10 inches away.
  5. Wait one minute, turn the grille 90º, and repeat the spraying process. Continue until all four sides are evenly painted.
  6. While the paint is wet, check for excess paint under the frame or in perforations. Use compressed air to clear any clogged perforations. IMPORTANT: If perforations are plugged after paint dries, use a straight pin or sewing needle to carefully remove the paint.
  7. Once dry, replace the scrim cloth on the back of the grille and mount it onto the speaker.
