Search Modes
The VOYAGER offers four search modes tailored for different types of metal targets. Press the Search Mode button (?) to cycle through them.
All Metal
Detects all metallic targets, including iron. This mode ensures no target is missed.
Jewelry
Designed for finding jewelry like rings, bracelets, and necklaces. It may also detect coins and relics. This mode ignores iron, so small iron objects like nails are typically not detected.
Custom
Allows you to select which target ID groups will be detected. This helps in finding specific object types while ignoring unwanted items (e.g., trash in a park).
- Press the Search Mode button (?) until 'Custom' is selected.
- Use the ➖ and ➕ buttons to navigate to the target group you wish to modify. The icon will flash for 3 seconds, then invert its state. Alternatively, press the Search Mode button while the icon is flashing to toggle the group on or off.
[Diagram showing custom mode with target groups selected/deselected] The example shows the first, second, and fourth groups deselected (not detected) to ignore iron, foil, and pull-tabs.
Learn
Designed to "learn" a specific metallic target, allowing you to detect only that type of object.
- Prepare the target object you want the VOYAGER to learn (e.g., a coin).
- Press the Search Mode button (?) until 'Learn' is selected.
- Sweep the coil over the target object. The detector will learn the metallic properties of that specific object and disable all target groups except the one the object belongs to.
[Diagram showing learn mode with a coin] The example shows learn mode for a US quarter, which has a Target ID of 86, so only that target group is active (detected).
Operation
These steps guide you through using the detector from power-on to target recovery.
1. Activate and Select a Search Mode
Press the Power button (?) to turn on the detector. Wait a few seconds for startup calibration. Press the Search Mode button (?) to select the most suitable mode for your search (e.g., Jewelry or All Metal).
2. Start Detecting
The coil must be in motion to detect metal. Sweep the coil smoothly and parallel to the ground, keeping it close to the surface. Avoid touching the ground or hitting the coil. This maximizes detection depth and response to small objects.
Sweep the coil in a side-to-side motion, moving forward slowly at the end of each pass. An average sweep speed is 2-3 seconds from right to left. Slightly overlap each sweep for complete ground coverage.
[Diagram showing coil sweeping motion]
3. Detect a Target
When a target is detected, the detector will emit an audio signal, and the Target ID number will appear on the display. The corresponding Target Group icon will also flash, indicating the likely object type.
The Depth Indicator (see page 12) on the display will show the estimated depth of the buried target, giving an idea of how deep to dig.
4. Locate a Target
Once you've identified a target you wish to excavate, use the Pinpoint function to narrow down its exact location. This allows for a smaller excavation, making target recovery faster and tidier. Follow the procedure in "Locating a Target with Pinpoint" on page 11.
5. Recover the Target
Dig carefully for the target, being cautious not to damage it with your digging tool. After recovering the target, re-check the hole for any remaining targets.
6. Fill the Hole
Always fill in any holes you dig.
Factors Affecting Detection
Detection accuracy can be influenced by several factors:
- The angle of the target in the ground.
- The target's depth.
- The target's oxidation/rust level.
- The target's size.
- Environmental electrical interference.
In highly mineralized ground, fertile soil, or wet sand, the detector may signal even without metal. In such cases, reduce sensitivity or raise the coil higher off the ground. Metal digging tools can also affect detection if placed near the coil; keep them further away.
Detector Settings
Volume
The Volume setting adjusts the intensity of target signals. Press the Volume button (?) to cycle through volume settings from low to high. Pressing Volume again after reaching maximum will return to the lowest setting.
[Icon representing volume adjustment] The volume indicator on the display shows the current audio level.
Sensitivity
The VOYAGER is highly sensitive and features adjustable sensitivity. Setting the correct sensitivity level for specific detection conditions maximizes detection depth. Always choose the highest stable sensitivity setting for optimal performance.
The sensitivity indicator on the display shows the current sensitivity level. Each bar represents one level.
[Icon representing sensitivity adjustment]
Backlight
The VOYAGER has a backlight for low-light conditions. It is disabled by default at each startup to conserve battery. Press and hold the Volume/Backlight button to turn the backlight on or off.
ℹ️ Note: Turn off the backlight when not needed to save battery.
To Adjust Sensitivity Level
- Hold the coil steady, then press the Sensitivity button to activate sensitivity adjustment. Note: The adjustment mode will exit after 3 seconds of inactivity.
- Press the ➕ button to increase sensitivity until false signals occur.
- Press the ➖ button to decrease sensitivity just enough to make the false signals disappear.
- Sweep the coil over a clear patch of ground and further reduce the sensitivity level if background noise persists.
Excessive Noise
Excessive noise during detection can be caused by environmental electrical interference from sources like power lines, mobile phone towers, or other metal detectors. If noise is an issue, try the following steps:
- Move away from local sources of electrical interference.
- Restart the detector.
- If restarting doesn't eliminate the noise, try reducing the sensitivity level.
Pinpoint
Pinpointing helps to quickly narrow down the location of a buried target, allowing for precise excavation. When Pinpoint is active, the detector emits a sound as the coil is held stationary over a target.
Locating a Target with Pinpoint
- Hold the coil away from the approximate target location, then press and hold the Pinpoint button (?) to activate Pinpoint mode. The Target ID number will begin flashing "PP". Wait for "PP" to stop flashing.
- Slowly sweep the coil over the target's location.
- Locate the center of the target by listening for the loudest signal.
- Rotate the search coil, moving to the side of the target. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
- The target will be located at the point where the strongest signal was emitted.
- Release the Pinpoint button and return to normal detection.
[Diagram showing the Pinpoint button]
Depth Indicator
The depth indicator estimates the approximate depth of a detected target. It is indicative only: fewer arrows suggest a shallower target, while more arrows indicate a deeper target. Accuracy can vary based on target type, size, and ground conditions.
After detecting a target, the depth indicator remains on the LCD for up to 5 seconds, or until the next target is detected. If no target is detected, the depth indicator icon and arrows remain off.
Below is an example of depth readings for a US quarter:
[Diagram showing depth indicator with arrows]
- 1" (25 mm)
- 3" (75 mm)
- 5" (125 mm)
- 6" (150 mm)
- > 6" (> 150 mm)
Target Identification
Target ID Number
Target ID numbers range from 0 to 99. Ferrous targets (iron) typically fall between 0 and 30. When a target is detected, a number appears on the display's Target ID field, indicating its ferrous or non-ferrous properties for quick identification.
For example, a US quarter has a Target ID of 86. This means any time a target with ID 86 is detected, it is very likely to be a US quarter.
The last detected Target ID remains on the display for 5 seconds or until another target is detected. If no detection occurs, or if the detector passes over a rejected target, two large dashes are displayed.
[Diagram showing target ID numbers and icons]
Target Groups
Target Groups are located at the top of the display. Each Target ID number has a corresponding Target Group icon that flashes when that type of target is detected.
Target Examples
Targets have a wide variety of metallic properties, making precise identification challenging. This table is a general guide:
ID Range | Target Types |
---|---|
1-30 | Iron |
31-55 | Small coins, jewelry, foil, US 5-cent coins |
56-60 | Medium coins, pull-tabs |
61-75 | Medium coins, jewelry, US 1-cent coins, pull-tabs |
76-85 | Medium coins, jewelry, US 10-cent coins |
86-90 | Large coins, silver coins, US 25-cent coins |
91-99 | Bottle caps, large coins, silver coins, US 50-cent coins |
Target Tones
Target IDs are assigned different tones, allowing operators to broadly classify targets without looking at the display. The VOYAGER has three tones: Low, Medium, and High.
The tone break point is the point on the Target ID scale where the target tone changes.
[Diagram showing tone ranges]
- Low Tone: 0-30
- Medium Tone: 31-55
- High Tone: 56-99
Batteries
The VOYAGER requires two 9V batteries for operation. Alkaline batteries are recommended.
Replace batteries when the Battery Level indicator shows no more segments. (?)
ℹ️ Note: Replace both batteries with new ones simultaneously; do not mix old and new batteries.
⚠️ WARNING: Dispose of old batteries properly. Never bury or burn them.
⚠️ WARNING: If the detector will not be used for a week or more, remove the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic parts, so do not store the detector with batteries installed for extended periods.
Battery Level
The Battery Level Indicator shows the current battery status. This indicator is approximate. When the battery level becomes critically low, the detector will automatically shut down.
[Diagram of battery level indicator]

Troubleshooting
Detector Not Turning On or Turning Off By Itself
- Replace the batteries.
Detector Detects Nothing
- Verify that Target Groups are enabled for the objects you are searching for, or select the All Metal mode.
- Ensure the coil is moved sufficiently close to the ground (i.e., close enough to the target to detect it).
- Ensure the search coil is connected correctly.
- Increase the sensitivity level (see page 10).
Irregular/Excessive Noise
- Restart the detector and check for noise again.
- Move away from local sources of electrical interference.
- Reduce the sensitivity level (see page 10).
Multiple Target Groups Flashing and Many Audio Signals
- Multiple different targets may be detected simultaneously (overlapping targets).
- The detected object is complex (rusted or composed of multiple metal types), making it difficult for the detector to identify correctly. Try approaching the target from different angles or using a different search mode.
No Sound When Headphones are Connected
- Check that the headphones are plugged in correctly.
- Ensure the detector's Volume is set to an audible level.
- If using headphones with their own volume control, ensure it is set to an audible level.
- Unplug the headphones and check if the detector's speaker is audible.
- If available, try using a different pair of headphones.
