2. Main Menu Layout

The DVR features a graphical user interface accessible via a connected monitor and mouse.

Default Login Credentials:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: 12345

Username and password are case-sensitive. It is strongly recommended to change the default password.

The Main Menu provides access to various functions:

  • Playback: View recorded video and make backups.
  • File Management: Search for snapshots and make large backups.
  • Recording Configuration: Set up recording type, motion detection, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Cameras Setup: Add cameras, adjust brightness, contrast, camera name, PTZ, and privacy mask settings.
  • System Configuration: Set up Date/Time, Network, screen settings, and user accounts.
  • Maintenance: Upgrade firmware, perform factory resets, manage system logs, and import/export settings.
  • System Information: View model number, firmware version, camera status, HDD status, and more.

At the bottom of the screen, you can see the logged-in user (e.g., 'User: admin') and options to 'Log Out and Lock the DVR' or 'Exit MENU to Live View'.

3. Formatting the Hard Drive

If the Hard Drive (HDD) is not formatted (initialized), the DVR will emit a continuous beep until formatting is complete.

To format the HDD:

  1. Navigate to MENUSYSTEM CONFIGURATIONHDD.
  2. Select the HDD(s) that need formatting.
  3. Press the INIT button.

The HDD Information screen displays a list of HDDs with their capacity, status (e.g., Sleeping), property (e.g., Local), and free space. It also shows the 'Total HDD Space' and 'Free Space' for the system.

Units purchased with HDDs usually come with pre-formatted drives. Formatting an HDD will erase all recorded video from that drive, but it does not affect system settings.

4. Setting Up Date/Time

Accurate time and date settings are crucial for recording and event logs.

To set the Time and Date:

  1. Navigate to MENUSYSTEM CONFIGURATIONGENERAL.
  2. In the 'Time/Date' tab, configure the 'Date Format', 'System Date', and 'System Time'.
  3. Adjust the 'Time Zone' settings. You can also enable 'Daylight Savings Time' if applicable.
  4. For automatic time synchronization, configure the 'NTP Settings' by enabling NTP and entering the 'NTP Server' address and 'NTP Port'.

The interface allows direct adjustment of Date and Time settings, as well as Time Zone and Daylight Savings Time configurations.

5. Setting Up the Network

Proper network configuration is essential for remote access and connectivity.

Network Access Steps:

  1. Assign IP Information: Set an IP address, Default Gateway, Subnet Mask, and DNS server for the DVR. Note: This refers to DNS, not DDNS.
  2. Port Forwarding: Configure your router to forward the necessary ports for remote access.
  3. DDNS Registration: Required only if your public IP address is dynamic.

To assign an IP Address:

  1. Navigate to MENUSYSTEM CONFIGURATIONNETWORK.
  2. In the 'General' tab, select the 'NIC Type'.
  3. Configure the 'IPv4 Address', 'IPv4 Subnet Mask', 'IPv4 Default Gateway', and 'DNS Server'.
  4. You can choose to 'Enable DHCP', which allows the router to automatically assign an IP address to the DVR.

The DVR's default IP Address is typically 192.0.0.64.

Port Configuration:

After setting the IP information, click the “MORE SETTINGS” tab. This section contains the ports required for remote access:

  • Server Port (default 8000): Responsible for Mobile App and Client Software login.
  • HTTP Port (default 80): Responsible for Web Browser login.
  • RTSP Port (default 10554): Responsible for Video/Audio Streaming.

These ports can be changed to avoid conflicts with your ISP or existing network configuration.

Port Forwarding:

Connect a computer to the same router as the DVR (wired connection recommended). Log into your router and proceed with port forwarding. For assistance, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or router manufacturer. You can also refer to resources like www.portforward.com for step-by-step instructions. Hikvision USA is not affiliated with www.portforward.com and is not responsible for any activity on that site.

DDNS Setup:

DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) allows access to your DVR using a domain name even with a dynamic IP address.

  1. Click on the DDNS tab within 'System Configuration'.
  2. Enable DDNS.
  3. Change the DDNS TYPE to HiDDNS (or HkDDNS in some cases).
  4. Ensure the Server Address is set to www.hik-online.com.
  5. Create a DEVICE DOMAIN NAME. This name cannot contain spaces, special characters, or uppercase letters.

EZVIZ Cloud:

Enabling 'EZVIZ Cloud' allows connection through a secure server, potentially eliminating the need for port forwarding. For detailed information, contact Technical Support.

If the Domain Name does not meet criteria or is already registered, an error message will appear. Ensure it adheres to the specified format (no uppercase, numbers at the start, spaces, or special characters).

6. Adding IP Cameras

This section guides you through adding IP cameras to your DVR.

To add IP cameras:

  1. Navigate to MENUCAMERAS SETUP.
  2. The 'Cameras Setup' screen displays a list of detected and added cameras.

Interface Controls:

  • '+' Button: Use this to add a camera to the DVR.
  • 'Edit' Button: Use this to change a camera's IP address.
  • 'Garbage Can' Icon: Click this icon to delete an added camera.
  • 'Refresh' Button: Use this to find cameras connected to the network.

Detected cameras are typically shown in YELLOW, while already added cameras appear in WHITE.

To change a camera's name, navigate to the OSD (On-Screen Display) settings.

Refer to the manual for detailed information.

7. Setting Up Recording

Hikvision DVRs are set to CONTINUOUS RECORDING by default.

To configure recording schedules:

  1. Navigate to MENURECORDING CONFIGURATION.
  2. The 'Recording Configuration' screen displays a schedule grid for each camera.

Schedule Colors:

  • Blue: Continuous Recording
  • Yellow: Event Recording (Motion/Alarm)
  • Grey: No Recording

You can enable or disable the schedule for each camera using the 'Enable Schedule' checkbox.

Setting up Motion Recording:

  1. In the 'Recording Configuration' screen, click on 'EVENT' (which appears yellow). The mouse cursor will change to a wand icon.
  2. Select the calendar grid. Click and drag from the top-left to the bottom-right corner to set the desired time frame for motion recording, turning the selected cells YELLOW.
  3. Press APPLY.
  4. Press COPY to apply the new schedule to other cameras.

Motion Detection Setup:

After setting up 'EVENT RECORDING', go to 'MOTION DETECT' to configure motion detection for each camera. For IP cameras, this configuration must be done individually; the 'COPY' option is available only for analog cameras.

  • Motion Sensitivity: Adjusts the sensitivity level. The number of bright green squares indicates the sensitivity level (e.g., 3 green squares shown in an example).
  • Motion Area: Defines the grid area where motion will be detected.

Recording Quality Settings:

To set recording Resolution, Frame Rate, and Bitrate, go to 'RECORD QUALITY' within the 'RECORDING CONFIGURATION' submenu.

  • Stream Type: Enables/disables audio streaming from cameras. If a camera lacks audio capabilities, only the 'Video' option is available.
  • Resolution: Sets the recording resolution for each camera.
  • Bitrate Type: Choose between 'Variable' or 'Constant' to manage HDD space. 'Variable' is generally recommended.
  • Video Quality: Adjusts picture clarity. A 'medium' setting (represented by 3 green squares) is recommended for a balance between quality and HDD space.
  • Frame Rate: Setting the frame rate between 12-15 fps is recommended to save HDD space and ensure smooth playback without choppiness.
  • Max Bitrate Mode: Allows choosing between preset bitrate values or customizing them. 'General' setting is recommended.
  • Max Bitrate (KBPS): The selected bitrate for video streaming.
  • Max Bitrate Recommended: The DVR's recommended bitrate based on other parameters.
  • Record Audio: Turns audio recording on or off. This option is available for IP cameras only if they have a connected microphone.
  • Video Stream: Allows switching between 'Main Stream' and 'Sub Stream' (requires a restart).
  • Input Resolution: Displays the resolution of the video stream from the camera.
  • Recording Time (days): Indicates the remaining recording time based on HDD capacity and recording parameters.

Recommended Recording Parameters Table:

ResolutionVideo QualityFrame Rate (FPS)Bitrate (KBPS)
320x240 (QVGA)Medium (3 squares)12-15207
352x240 (CIF)Medium (3 squares)12-15384

1600x1200 (2MP)Medium (3 squares)12-152560
1920x1080 (1080P)Medium (3 squares)12-153072

Sub Stream Setup:

The Sub Stream is used for streaming on mobile devices and displaying multiple cameras locally. Unlike the Main Stream, the Sub Stream resolution can only go up to 4CIF.

If upload speed is insufficient, consider lowering the frame rate, bitrate, or resolution for smoother mobile app viewing.
