Controls Overview

The XENYX mixers feature various controls for input channels, EQ, FX sends, panning, level adjustment, and master output.

  • MIC Input: Balanced XLR input for microphones, with switchable +48 V phantom power for condenser microphones.
  • LINE IN: Balanced 1/4" TRS input for line-level signals. Can also accept unbalanced mono jacks.
  • GAIN: Adjusts the input gain. Turn fully counterclockwise when connecting/disconnecting sources.
  • EQUALIZER: 3-band EQ (2-band on 502) for tone shaping, with +/- 15 dB boost/cut.
  • LOW CUT: Steep low-cut filter (75 Hz) on mono channels (1002/1202) to remove unwanted low frequencies.
  • FX Send: Variable send for external effects units.
  • PAN: Controls the stereo position of the signal.
  • LEVEL: Determines the channel signal level in the main mix.
  • CLIP LED: Indicates signal clipping; reduce GAIN if illuminated.
  • Stereo Inputs: For stereo line-level sources. Can be used in mono if only the left input is used.
  • BAL (Balance): Adjusts the relative levels of left and right stereo signals. Functions as PAN for mono operation.
  • +4/-10 Switch: Selects input sensitivity for line inputs.
  • STEREO AUX RETURN (802 only): For returning effects signals to the mixer.
  • FX SEND Output: Connects to external effects processors.
  • PHONES/CONTROL ROOM: Headphone output and control room monitoring.
  • MAIN MIX Outputs: Main stereo outputs for connecting to amplifiers or active speakers.
  • 2-TRACK INPUT: For connecting external stereo sources like CD players or tape decks.
  • 2-TRACK OUTPUT: Parallel output to MAIN MIX, for connecting to recording devices.
  • 2-TR TO MIX Switch: Assigns 2-Track input to the main mix.
  • 2-TR TO CTRL ROOM Switch: Monitors 2-Track input in the control room.
  • FX TO CTRL ROOM Switch: Monitors FX send signal in the control room (802/502 do not have this).
  • +48 V Phantom Power: Activates phantom power for XLR microphone inputs.
  • POWER LED: Indicates the unit is powered on.
  • LEVEL INDICATOR: 4-segment LED meter for signal level monitoring.

Level Setting

To set channel gains correctly:

  1. Set all LEVEL controls to the center position (0 dB).
  2. Use the GAIN controls to increase input amplification until signal peaks show 0 dB on the level meter.
  3. For digital recorders, ensure the recorder's peak meter does not go into overload. Digital distortion is undesirable and can render recordings useless.
  4. A recording level of 0 dB is recommended for all signal types.
