Important Safety Information

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT POWER SUPPLY until the unit is completely installed. Ensure electrical service to the fan and light is locked in the "OFF" position.

WARNING! TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS:

CAUTION: For general ventilation use only. Do not use to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and vapors.

CAUTION: Bulb used in fluorescent models is not dimmable.

CAUTION: Use only Fantech (MODEL PBB14) fluorescent bulbs and PAR16/MR16 GU10 50W MAX. halogen bulbs (Fantech Model PBB50).

Installation Instructions

Fan and Bracket Installation

  1. Location Planning: Mount the fan as far as possible from the intake point for quiet operation. A minimum of 8 feet of insulated flexible duct is recommended between the exhaust grille and the fan. Ensure the fan is accessible for service.
  2. Mounting Bracket: Attach the mounting bracket to a support beam using wood screws. The fan can be mounted at any angle along the duct. Vertical mounting is recommended to reduce condensation. For horizontal mounting, wrap insulation around the fan or drill a 1/4" hole in the housing bottom for drainage (NPT insert and drain tube sold separately).
  3. Suspension: For PB Series fans, use the provided bracket (Illustration 1) or hanger straps (Illustration 2) for suspension.
  4. Duct Connection: Connect duct to the fan inlet and outlet using plastic ties or duct tape. For insulated flexible duct, clamp or tape the inner vinyl core to the inlet and outlet, and tape the vapor barrier to the fan housing. Fantech recommends insulated flexible duct for all bathroom exhaust applications.

Flexible Duct Installation Hints:

Electrical Connection

  1. Remove the terminal box cover. All fan motor connections are pre-wired to a terminal strip. A 3/8" Romex type cable restraint connector is needed for wiring through the knockout.
  2. Bring incoming electrical service through the connector and knockout. Secure the connector nut over the wiring. Connect the neutral (white) wire to "N", the line (black) wire to "L", and the ground (green) wire to the ground symbol on the terminal strip. Refer to the wiring diagram inside the electrical cover if labels are unclear.
  3. Secure the Romex connector and replace the terminal box cover. No additional fan wiring is necessary as motor and capacitor connections are pre-wired.

Ceiling Grille Installation With or Without Light

  1. Plan Grille Location: Determine the most effective placement for ceiling grilles based on bathroom layout and fixtures.
  2. Secure Housing:
    • New Construction: Mount housing directly to ceiling joists using screws and keyhole slots. Locator tabs should be flush with the bottom edge of the joist for correct positioning after drywall installation (Figure 1).
    • Alternative Mounting: Use hanger bars to suspend the housing between joists. Position hanger bars 3/16" from the bottom edge of the joist for 4" duct models and 15/32" for 6" duct models. Tighten anti-slide screws on 4" duct models to secure hanger bars (Figure 2). Hanger bars can accommodate joists up to 24" (4" duct) or 16" (6" duct) on center.
    • Existing Construction/Drywall: Cut a 6" round hole for the grille and install the housing from the attic (Figure 3). Align housing using locator tabs or hanger bars. Punch out keyhole knockouts and electrical knockout if needed.
  3. Electrical Connections (Ceiling Grille Housing): Remove the electrical cover, connect power following the wiring diagram (Figure 5), and replace the cover.
  4. Connect Fan to Housing: Install appropriate diameter duct from the fan to the ceiling grille housing. For dual grille models, connect duct to a wye adapter (included) and then to each ceiling grille housing. Secure and seal all duct connections. For insulated flexible duct, seal the inner liner and outer shell to the duct connector.
  5. Install Bulb: Gently insert the bulb into the socket in the grille housing. Push the grille firmly into the steel collar until it is shouldered by the ceiling drywall (Figure 3).

Additional Steps for Fluorescent Models Over Tub or Shower:

  1. Place ring 1 on socket legs.
  2. Screw metal shield over socket.
  3. Add rubber gasket.
  4. Secure ring 2 to socket. A click indicates secure installation.

Repeat steps 1-5 for each additional ceiling grille housing.

*For optimal performance, position the wye adapter three duct diameters away from the fan inlet.
