Olympus Stapes Prostheses Reference Guide
Leading the Way in Otology
In 1956, Richards Manufacturing introduced the world's first stapes implant. Over the subsequent five decades, the Richards line has evolved to revolutionize middle ear prostheses through the development of new products and the introduction of innovative materials and technologies. From the initial PORP® and TORP® designs to the first commercially available vent tube, and from advancements in Oto-endoscopy to precision instrumentation, these innovations in Otology have resulted in the most comprehensive range of otologic products available in the market.
Today, the Richards product line continues to be offered through Olympus. Olympus provides not only procedure solutions for Otology but also offers advanced visualization and treatment products for Pediatric ENT, Rhinology, Laryngology, Sleep, and Head and Neck procedures. As Olympus's commitment to the ENT community grows, the company will continue to offer innovative procedure solutions designed to improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life. Olympus ENT sales consultants are available to assist and are skillfully trained to understand and promptly address the specific needs of ENT professionals.
Stapes Alloys & Materials
Fluoroplastics
Fluoroplastics are polymers composed of carbon and fluorine atoms, derived from various resins and utilized across industrial, medical, and home applications. Teflon is a well-known brand name for a popular variety of fluoroplastic. Otologists highly value fluoroplastics for their inertness, smooth texture, and biocompatibility. Fluoroplastic components are manufactured through molding, machining from rods, or forming from tubing and sheeting. Olympus uses white and blue colors for these parts.
Nitinol
Nitinol (Nickel-Titanium alloy) is a shape-memory metal alloy with a history of use in medical applications. Its ability to "self-fashion" with heat significantly simplifies the crimping maneuver.
Platinum
Platinum is a highly corrosion-resistant and very ductile metal, well-tolerated by the body. Devices crafted from platinum wire or ribbon can be easily adjusted or crimped by physicians and retain their formed shape without "spring-back."
Porous Polyethylene
Porous polyethylene (Plasti-Pore) is produced by sintering individual polyethylene resin particles, allowing for tissue ingrowth into the implant material's pores. The base resin, polyethylene, is recognized as a very inert material. Olympus exclusively uses the natural white color for this material.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel (ASTM F 138, Grade 2) is a special quality, implant-grade steel with a long history of use in medical implants. It features balanced corrosion resistance and an extremely clean microstructure. Stainless steel parts are machined from rods, and wire made from this material is also used in many ENT products.
Titanium
Titanium (ASTM F 136) is widely used in medical implants due to its excellent corrosion resistance and good tissue tolerance. The material is lightweight and MRI compatible.
