Cisco IEC6400 Edge Compute Appliance

Product overview

The Cisco IEC6400 Edge Compute Appliance enables a Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul (Cisco URWB) network to scale to hundreds of Cisco Catalyst™ Industrial Wireless (IW) devices, supporting up to 40 Gbps in overall capacity.

Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul (Cisco URWB) is a wireless technology that connects moving assets or extends networks where fiber is not feasible or affordable. It offers high availability, low latency, and zero packet loss with seamless handoffs. Cisco URWB operates in unlicensed spectrum, deploys like Wi-Fi, and provides full network control.

The Cisco IEC6400 Edge Compute Appliance combines Cisco URWB technology with Cisco's leading computing platforms. It leverages the Cisco UCS C220 M6 Rack Server to extend Cisco URWB benefits to large-scale, high-capacity wireless networks. It serves as an aggregation point for MPLS-over-the-wireless communications in networks with up to hundreds of IW devices requiring multi-Gbps aggregated throughput.

Extended reachability over multiple clusters

The Cisco IEC6400 Edge Compute Appliance is based on the Cisco UCS C220 M6 Rack Server, offering high performance for space-constrained environments. More information is available at Cisco UCS C220 M6 Rack Server Data Sheet.

Cisco URWB networks can be designed for Layer 2 use cases (e.g., connecting automated guided vehicles [AGVs] or autonomous mobile robots [AMRs] in a factory) and Layer 3 use cases (e.g., train-to-trackside communications in subways or railways). This allows the network to scale without compromising reliability and availability.

The IEC6400 appliance fits both Layer 2 and Layer 3 architectures, especially when a dedicated appliance is needed for advanced mesh end capabilities.

In Layer 3 architectures, the appliance connects different Cisco URWB network clusters separated into broadcast domains. It acts as the aggregation point for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) tunnels, connecting all parts of the URWB infrastructure across Layer 3 networks or WANs. This enables zero handoff time for roaming across network clusters in different broadcast domains, thanks to patented URWB make-before-break technology.

This hierarchical architecture allows the network to scale to any size without performance compromise, maintaining ultra-low latency, high availability, and high throughput.
