Unpack the machine and check the components
Ensure the following components are included in the box. Note that contents may vary by country.
- Toner Cartridge and Drum Unit Assemblies (Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow) - *These are pre-installed in the machine.
- Waste Toner Box*
- Belt Unit*
- AC Power Cord
- Quick Setup Guide
- Product Safety Guide
Notes:
- The available connection interfaces vary by model. You may need to purchase a separate interface cable.
- For USB connection, a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) no longer than 2 meters is recommended.
- For network connection (HL-L3240CDW / HL-L3280CDW / HL-L8240CDW), use a straight-through Category 5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable.
- Illustrations in this guide show the HL-L3240CDW model.

Step 1: Remove packing materials and re-install toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies
Follow these steps to prepare the machine:
- Remove all blue packing tape from the machine.
- Carefully remove the orange protective parts from each toner cartridge.
- Insert each toner cartridge firmly into its corresponding drum unit assembly.
- Insert the toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies into the machine. Push firmly until they click into place.

Step 2: Load paper in the paper tray
Insert paper into the paper tray:
- Pull out the paper tray.
- Place the stack of paper in the tray, ensuring it does not exceed the maximum fill line.
- Adjust the paper guides to fit the paper size snugly.
- Insert the paper tray back into the machine until it clicks.

Step 3: Connect the power cord and turn the machine on
Connect the AC power cord to the machine and a power outlet.
The location of the power button varies by model. Press the power button to turn the machine on.
Note: Before connecting the power cord, locate the Serial Number label on the back or side of the machine. Record this number for registration and warranty support.

Step 4: Select your language (if needed)
Follow the on-screen prompts on the machine's display:
For LCD Models:
- Press the [▲] or [▼] buttons to select [Initial Setup], then press [OK].
- Press the [▲] or [▼] buttons to select [Local Language], then press [OK].
- Press the [▲] or [▼] buttons to select your desired language, then press [OK].
- Press the [Cancel] button to exit.
For Touchscreen Models:
- On the Touchscreen, navigate to [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Initial Setup] > [Local Language].
- Select your desired language.
- Press the [OK] button.
Step 5: Connect your computer or mobile device to your machine
Complete the setup by following the on-screen instructions for your chosen connection type (USB, Wired Network, or Wireless Network).
Visit setup.brother.com to download and install the necessary Brother software.
Setup Finished: Your machine is now ready for printing. To check for the latest firmware, visit support.brother.com/up7.
Important Notice for Network Security: The default password for managing the machine's settings is found on the back of the machine, marked "Pwd". It is strongly recommended to change this default password immediately to prevent unauthorized access.
Can't Connect? Check the following:
- Wireless network: Restart your wireless access point/router if possible.
- Wired network: Ensure the cable is securely connected.
- USB connection: Ensure the USB cable is properly connected.
- If connection is still not successful, restart your machine and computer, then try again.
- If issues persist, visit support.brother.com for FAQs and troubleshooting.
Step 6: Manual wireless setup (Wireless models)
If automatic wireless setup fails, follow these steps for manual configuration:
- Locate your wireless access point/router's SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password). Write them down in the provided fields below.
- For LCD Models: Navigate to [Network] > [WLAN (Wi-Fi)] > [Find Network] using the [▲] or [▼] buttons and [OK]. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- For Touchscreen Models: Press [Find Wi-Fi Network] and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Select your network's SSID from the list and enter the Network Key (Password) using the on-screen keyboard or buttons.
- When the wireless setup is successful, the display will show [Connected].
- Proceed to Step 5 to install the software.
If setup is unsuccessful, restart your Brother machine and wireless access point/router, then repeat Step 6.
If you cannot find your network information, consult your network administrator or wireless access point/router manufacturer.
