Important Safety Precautions
Warning: Electrical products can cause personal injury or property damage such as fire if safety precautions are not followed. This instruction manual shows important precautions to prevent accidents and how to handle the product. Please read this manual carefully and use the product safely. After reading, be sure to keep it in a place where you can refer to it at any time.
About This Manual
This instruction manual explains how to use lenses. Precautions common to all lenses, such as notes on use, are found in the separate document titled "Precautions before using". Be sure to read both documents before using your lens.
Compatibility
This lens is designed for Sony α camera system E-mount cameras. It cannot be used on A-mount cameras. The FE 28mm F2 is compatible with the range of a 35mm format image sensor. A camera equipped with a 35mm format image sensor can be set to shoot at APS-C size. For details on how to set your camera, refer to its instruction manual. For compatibility information, visit the Sony website in your area or consult your local Sony dealer or authorized service facility.

Notes on Use
- When carrying a camera with the lens attached, always firmly hold both the camera and the lens.
- This lens is designed with dust-proofness and splash-proofness in mind, but it is not waterproof. If using in the rain, etc., keep water drops away from the lens.
Precautions on Using a Flash
When using a flash, always remove the lens hood and shoot at least 1 m (3.3 feet) away from your subject. With certain combinations of lens and flash, the lens may partially block the light of the flash, resulting in a shadow at the bottom of the picture.
Vignetting
When using the lens, the corners of the screen become darker than the center. To reduce this phenomenon (called vignetting), close the aperture by 1 to 2 stops.
A. Identifying the Parts
Refer to Diagram A.
- 1. Lens hood index: A mark on the lens barrel to align with the lens hood.
- 2. Focusing ring: Rotates to adjust focus.
- 3. Lens contacts: Electrical contacts for communication with the camera. Do not touch these contacts.
- 4. Mounting index: A mark on the lens barrel to align with the camera mount.
B. Attaching and Detaching the Lens
Refer to Illustrations B-1 and B-2.
To attach the lens (See Illustration B-1):
- Remove the front and rear lens caps and the camera body cap.
- The front lens cap can be attached/detached in two ways (1) and (2). Method (2) is convenient when attaching/detaching the cap with the lens hood attached.
- Align the white mounting index on the lens barrel with the white index on the camera. Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks and locks into place.
- Do not press the camera's lens release button while mounting the lens.
- Do not mount the lens at an angle.
To remove the lens (See Illustration B-2):
- While holding down the camera's lens release button, rotate the lens counterclockwise until it stops, then detach the lens.
C. Attaching the Lens Hood
Refer to Diagram C.
Using a lens hood is recommended to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality.
- Align the red line on the lens hood with the red dot on the lens (lens hood index).
- Insert the lens hood into the lens mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place, ensuring the red dot on the hood aligns with the red dot on the lens.
- When using a built-in camera flash or a supplied flash, remove the lens hood to avoid blocking the flash light.
- For storage, attach the lens hood backwards onto the lens.
D. Focusing
There are three focusing methods:
- Auto Focus: The camera focuses automatically.
- DMF (Direct Manual Focus): After the camera focuses automatically, you can make fine manual adjustments.
- Manual Focus: You focus manually.
Refer to your camera's instruction manual for mode settings.
